Overview

Network storage management operations (backup and restore, archive, and retrieve, HSM) contend with traditional Local Area Network (LAN) usage for bandwidth required by revenue-generating network applications. Current networking infrastructures may buckle under the amount of data being moved. These problems are getting worse as data continues to grow at explosive rates. SANs provide an alternative path for data movement. In addition, data movement over the SAN frees up the LAN to support the traditional network applications.

Tivoli® Storage Manager exploits the SAN path by enabling the Tivoli Storage Manager client to back up and restore data directly to and from SAN-attached storage.

What's New in Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.2

For LAN-free:

  • You have additional support for LAN-free client data transfer directly from the client to a SAN-attached storage device.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager HP-UX server can now participate in tape library sharing.
  • Tivoli SANergy™ exploitation enables LAN-free client data transfer to sequential access storage pools on disk.
  • The 3494 library includes support for LAN-free client data transfer and for dynamic drive sharing.

For Windows®:

  • Improved overall incremental backup performance with journal-based backups for the Windows NT® and Windows 2000 clients

Description

LAN-free Enhancements

LAN-free Client Support — Tivoli Storage Manager supports LAN-free data transfer in a SAN environment. SANs provide an alternative path for data movement between the Tivoli Storage Manager client and server. LAN-free data transfer exploits this SAN path by enabling the Tivoli Storage Manager client to back up and restore data directly to and from SAN-attached storage, which is shared between the Tivoli Storage Manager server and client, and managed by the server. The existing LAN connection is used to exchange control information such as policy information and meta data about the objects being backed up, while the data movement utilizes the SAN to write directly to the storage media. Data movement is off-loaded from the LAN and from the Tivoli Storage Manager server processor providing greater scalability for the server. The benefit is most pronounced when large files are involved. This makes the LAN more available for use by key revenue-generating network applications and improves the scalability of the Tivoli Storage Manager server to support a greater number of simultaneous client connections. This support has been available on the Windows platform for the Tivoli Data Protection products for Oracle, Domino™, R/3, SQL, and Exchange. It is now available on the AIX and Sun Solaris platforms for the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive clients, for the Tivoli Data Protection products for Lotus® Domino, Oracle, and R/3, and for the Tivoli Storage Manager client API. It is also available on the Solaris platform for Tivoli Data Protection for Informix. The Tivoli Storage Manager API enables DB2® Universal Database (UDB) LAN-free backups. The LAN-free Windows backup-archive client will be available September 28, 2001.

Tape Library Sharing with HP-UX — Tape libraries can be shared among multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers on Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, Solaris, and now HP-UX. One or more of these Tivoli Storage Manager servers can each be used with LAN-free client data transfer for Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, and Solaris clients. Initial device support for LAN-free clients, using the Tivoli Storage Manager server on HP-UX, will include 3570, IBM LTO, and 3590.

Tivoli SANergy Support for Storage Pools on Disk — LAN-free client data transfer scalability is improved with the use of SAN-based storage pools on disk. The Tivoli Storage Manager client and server take advantage of disk storage SAN acceleration by Tivoli SANergy, Version 2.2 or later, through the use of the Tivoli Storage Manager device class for sequential disk, the file device class. This enables the Tivoli Storage Manager client and server to share the same disk storage accelerated by Tivoli SANergy to provide LAN-free backup and restore to storage pools on disk. Initially, Tivoli SANergy disk exploitation supports the Tivoli Storage Manager server on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Sun Solaris, and AIX, and the SANergy Meta Data Controller (MDC) on the Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Sun Solaris platforms. The Tivoli Storage Manager clients supported are Windows NT, Windows 2000, and AIX.

LAN-free client data transfer clients with STK ACSLS libraries — Tivoli Storage Manager will support LAN-free client data transfer clients with STK ACSLS libraries using the Tivoli Storage Manager external library manager (ELM) interface and in conjunction with vendors that support the ELM interface. This support will be available September 28, 2001.

Windows Enhancements

Journal-Based Backups — TSM client journaling improves overall incremental backup performance for Windows NT and Windows 2000 clients. Performance is improved because the files to be backed up are tracked in a journal. Journal-based backups eliminate the need for the client to scan the local file system or query the server to determine which files to process. It also reduces network traffic between the client and server.

Windows 2000 System Objects — Windows 2000 clients support the restore of inactive versions of systems objects as well as point-in-time restore of system objects. The system objects backups can be directed to a specific management class.

Mobile Dial-Up Support — Tivoli Storage Manager supports remote network connections to a Tivoli Storage Manager AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Windows NT, or Windows 2000 server. With a remote network connection, mobile Tivoli Storage Manager users, running on Windows, no longer need to manually dial into their company network for a scheduled backup. Tivoli Storage Manager automatic dialup capabilities establishes a connection prior to the scheduled backup. If the connection fails, Tivoli Storage Manager re-establishes the connection before attempting the backup.

Cluster Failover Support for Tape Drives on Windows — Tivoli Storage Manager supports Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS) in a Windows Datacenter or Windows Server operating environment. Although MSCS does not support failover of tape devices, Tivoli Storage Manager servers in a Windows cluster now support SCSI tape failover. The server cluster uses, and is limited to, two computers for Windows Server or Windows Advanced Server and up to four computers for Windows Datacenter. Even though Windows Datacenter can support up to four computers in the cluster, Tivoli Storage Manager SCSI tape failover restricts the number of computers to two. The computers must be physically connected to each other and must exclusively share a SCSI bus to which the tape devices are attached.

Tivoli Storage Manager Management Console — The Tivoli Storage Manager Management Console provides you with a network view of your Tivoli Storage Manager resources in a single interface. You can add Windows- and non-Windows-based computers to the console and then manage the Tivoli Storage Manager resources on those computers using the integrated Web administrator, Web client, Administrative console monitor, and Administrative command line. The Tivoli Storage Manager server wizards are included and initial configuration has been simplified. In a Windows domain environment, Windows security is used to allow administrators to control the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver, server, storage agent, client, and scheduler services on local and remote computers, and allows the administrator to edit and view option and log files as well as Tivoli Storage Manager version and device information on those computers. The console can detect all computers on which Tivoli Storage Manager services are installed, and it can detect active Tivoli Storage Manager Web administrators and Web clients on Windows and non-Windows computers across the network. On Windows 2000, the console also integrates the removable storage manager (RSM), device management, event viewer, and system monitor MMC snapins to provide a custom storage management tool that leverages the Windows environment to help you manage TSM. The Tivoli Storage Manager management console is available in all languages supported by the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Unicode Support for Windows NT and Windows 2000 Clients — Tivoli Storage Manager Windows NT and Windows 2000 clients support the Unicode code page for file, directory, and file space names. Unicode is a universal character encoding standard that supports the interchange, processing, and display of text that is written in any modern world language. Unicode file spaces provide support for multi-lingual workstations without regard for the current locale. The Tivoli Storage Manager Version 3.1 servers on VM and AS/400® are not Unicode-enabled.

Additional Enhancements

OS/390 or z/OS Performance Improvements — The Tivoli Storage Manager server will write data in 256 KB blocks on 3590 devices, or devices that emulate a 3590, for OS/390 V2R10 or z/OS operating systems that support 256 KB blocks. This can result in up to a 40% improvement in throughput for client backup or storage pool migration, to the 3590 tape devices or those that emulate 3590.

Linux zSeries and S/390 Client — Tivoli Storage Manager provides a backup-archive client for Linux zSeries and S/390.

Support for Data Encryption — Tivoli Storage Manager client data, sent to the server during backup and archive operations, can be selectively encrypted with standard DES 56-bit encryption. Encryption is optional and is controlled by client options for the Windows, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, NetWare, SGI, Linux, NUMA-Q®, TRU64, and OS/390 clients.

Extending Tivoli Storage Manager Server Log Size — The Tivoli Storage Manager database log size limitation has been increased from 5 GB to 13 GB. This larger size improves the scalability of the Tivoli Storage Manager server by providing more flexibility in the timing of Tivoli Storage Manager database backups.

Space Reclamation for Selected Volumes — The Move Data command can now be used to recover unused space from specified sequential-access storage pool volumes. Empty space can accumulate within file aggregates as files are deleted from a Tivoli Storage Manager server. The Move Data command now provides an option for removing this empty space by reconstructing aggregates during data transfer. This option provides the ability to control the sequential-access volumes from which space will be recovered. This support is in addition to the automated space recovery that is done today during reclamation at the storage pool level.

Tivoli Decision Support for Storage Management Analysis — Tivoli Storage Resource Reporting is a set of powerful, best practice decision support guides that assist storage administrators in making informed, proactive decisions relating to their Tivoli Storage product implementations, including Tivoli Storage Manager and Tivoli Storage Network Manager. Tivoli Storage Resource Reporting is included as part of both Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 and Tivoli Storage Network Manager V1.1, at no additional charge. However, you must have purchased Tivoli Decision Support 5698-TDS in order to use Tivoli Decision Support for Tivoli Storage Resource Reporting. The Tivoli Framework is not required.

The best practice guide for Tivoli Storage Manager, Tivoli Decision Support for Storage Management Analysis , provides text-based reports, graphical reports, and trend analysis on Tivoli Storage Manager deployments, from small to very large. In addition to the previously available event, performance, and general health reporting, it now provides capacity reporting and analysis. Tivoli Decision Support for Storage Management Analysis works with all Tivoli Storage Manager servers, Version 4.1 or later. The supported relational database management systems (RDBMSs) are DB2, MS SQL, and Oracle.

The best practice guide for Tivoli Storage Network Manager, Tivoli Decision Support for Tivoli Storage Network Manager , provides text-based reports on the inventory of SAN resources, the capacity and usage of SAN resources, and monitoring of SAN resources. Tivoli Storage Network Manager (5698-SNM) provides SAN network management to help maintain the availability of the physical SAN network, LUN management to help enable the secure sharing of disks among multiple systems attached to a SAN, and File System Automation to provide storage capacity on demand to SAN attached systems. DB2 is the supported relational database for use with Tivoli Decision Support for Tivoli Storage Network Management Analysis. Support for NDMP Backup of NAS File Servers — The new Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP enables backup and recovery support on the Tivoli Storage Manager Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers for network-attached storage (NAS) file servers from Network Appliance. NAS file servers often require a unique approach to providing backup and recovery services, because these file servers typically will not run third-party software. Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP utilizes NDMP to communicate with and provide backup and recovery services for NAS file servers. NDMP is an industry-standard protocol that allows a network storage-management application to control the backup and recovery of an NDMP-compliant file server without installing third-party software on that server. The implementation of the NDMP server protocol enables the NAS file servers to be backup-ready. The NDMP support for NAS file servers by Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP enables higher-performance backup to tape devices without moving the data over the LAN. Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP will be available September 28, 2001.

Tivoli Data Protection for Informix Version 4.1

New Support for HP-UX — Tivoli Data Protection for Informix is now available for HP-UX, in addition to support that has been available for AIX and Solaris.

Performance Considerations: Tivoli Storage Manager performance will vary depending upon a customer's particular configuration, the client/server options, and customization.

Planning Information

Conversion: For the AIX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 servers, the Tivoli Storage Manager database is automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 server. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the servers with the database.

For the HP-UX, OS/390, and z/OS servers, the Tivoli Storage Manager database is not automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager HP-UX, OS/390, and z/OS V4.2 servers. The Tivoli Storage Manager administrator must explicitly initiate the database upgrade using the UPGRADEDB command parameter. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the server with the database.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the Version 4.2 code, as well as after completing the installation. Refer to the README files for more detailed information.

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 to Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2, Tivoli Storage Manager clients and servers may be upgraded at different times. To help ensure that you can continue your backup and archive activities during the migration, note the following:

  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 client can perform V3.1 functional level backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager Version 3.1 server on VM or AS/400.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 server.
  • Data that has been backed up from a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 client to any Tivoli Storage Manager server can be restored using a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 client, with the exceptions of the Windows V4.2 client and any V4.2 clients using encryption.
  • All command line administrative clients can administer Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 and V4.2 servers, and the V3.1 VM and AS/400 servers.
  • Storage agents and servers must be at the same level of code. When the server is upgraded, the storage agents which are using that particular server must be upgraded as well.

Other migration information:

  • The following server operating systems supported in V4.1 were not migrated to V4.2 and are not supported in V4.2:
    • VM/ESA V2R2
    • AS/400 V4R3
  • The following client platforms or operating systems supported in V4.1 were not migrated to V4.2 and are not supported in V4.2:
    • Tru64 4.0 and 5.0
    • Novell NetWare 4.11 and 5.0
    • SCO UnixWare
    • Windows 95
  • The following client communication protocols supported on the following platforms in Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 were not migrated to V4.2 and are not supported in Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2:
    • APPC (LU6.2) with the AIX client
    • APPC (LU6.2) with the Windows client
    • NetBios with the Windows client

To help minimize server performance impact with use of the Unicode option on Windows NT and Windows 2000 clients operating with Version 4.2 servers, follow the recommended migration techniques found in the Administrator's Guide for the V4.2 server platforms being used.

APPC and IPX/SPX communication protocols on the NetWare client are supported in Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.2 but will not be supported in future Tivoli Storage Management releases.

Tivoli Systems Support

Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a no-charge (NC) order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support — NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.

Prior to the end of the first 12 months support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

Tivoli Systems offers a variety of support options in response to diverse customer requirements. The table below summarizes these offerings.

Support Upgrade

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable OTC feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the NC support period.

In subsequent years, if a customer wants to upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option, an MES order must be entered to discontinue the existing support option feature number and to add the feature number for the desired options After an MES order is entered, the support will be renewed and billed annually at that support level unless support is cancelled by the customer.
