Description

WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 can quickly and easily extend existing applications to new Web users and new WebSphere applications, enabling you to leverage your existing investment in host applications for a competitive advantage within the world of e-business. With WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5, you can combine multiple existing information sources into composite applications for new users, without making changes to the existing applications. The business benefits associated with Host Publisher are substantial. WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 builds on the advanced XML Gateway, Remote Integration Objects, and existing application navigational capabilities of Host Publisher V2.2. It provides added support for exploitation of WebSphere Application Server Advanced Edition and Enterprise JavaBean generation to deliver enterprise-class e-business solutions for your legacy applications.

The applications created with the common Host Publisher Studio will run unchanged in all supported operating environments: AIX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. Additional platform support is provided by Host Publisher for OS/390® and Host Publisher for iSeries which are available as separate products. The ability to move from one operating system platform to another will allow you to move your workload to a higher capacity platform as demands increase.

Host Publisher consists of two major components:

  • Host Publisher Studio
  • Host Publisher Server

Host Publisher Studio

The Host Publisher Studio is a collection of task-oriented, easy-to-use graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that assist the Web-application builder in managing and creating Web-to-host projects. It uses task-oriented prompts to guide the user through the creation process, minimizing or eliminating the need for programming to accomplish these projects.

The Studio automatically generates a JavaBean, called an Integration Object, which encapsulates the interactions and data retrieval. New with Host Publisher V3.5 is the ability to generate Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). You can use the Studio to generate a fully customizable HTML Web page for modeling interaction with the Integration Objects and presenting the resulting data. The HTML Web page can be enhanced with Web authoring tools, such as WebSphere Studio, to meet corporate style and image guidelines. Once the Web page is completed, you can publish it to a Host Publisher Server for production access by end users.

The Host Publisher Studio is provided on a separate CD assembly and runs on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 operating systems.

Host Publisher Server

The Host Publisher Server provides the runtime environment for supporting Web applications created with the Host Publisher Studio. Host Publisher Server is on a separate CD assembly and consists of runtime components such as:

  • Connection management
  • License monitoring
  • Run-time administration
  • Log and trace management

The Host Publisher Server uses WebSphere Application Server Advanced Edition V3.5 to provide a consistent, reliable execution environment for WebSphere applications (for example, servlets or EJB-based applications) and HTML/JSPs across platforms. A production use license for the IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition V3.5 is not included with WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 but must be acquired with a separate product order.

Note: Host Publisher V3.5 does include a separate CD for the WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition V3.5 for Windows NT and Windows 2000. The license associated with this program is for development use only and is not for production use. You are limited to the use of this program for internal evaluation and for the development, demonstration and testing of applications which use this program. This program is provided on a complementary basis and is not included within the customer support provided for the Host Publisher V3.5 product.

Load Balancing

WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 has been enhanced to support the load balancing capabilities of WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition. WebSphere Application Server provides support for running multiple Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) on a single machine. These JVMs can be clones of each other. JVMs that are clones of each other can be limited to one machine (vertical cloning) or can be spread across multiple machines (horizontal cloning). Both types of cloning provide two benefits:

  • Improved throughput, because requests can be distributed across multiple JVMs
  • Better fault tolerance, because when one JVM fails a user still can request that an application be processed by any of the remaining clones that can handle the request

WebSphere provides load balancing mechanisms for forwarding a client's requests across multiple-cloned JVMs to distribute the load on individual JVMs evenly.

Host Publisher support for WebSphere Work Load Manager has replaced the Network Dispatcher function included in previous versions of the Host Publisher product. Web server load balancing capabilities remain available to IBM customers within the complementary Edge Server product offering.

Distributed Administration

This function allows you to perform administration tasks on multiple instances of Host Publisher Server from a single Host Publisher Server. Examples of the types of administrative tasks supported include:

  • Selection of a server, and an instance of Host Publisher Server in that server
  • Monitoring server status: starting and stopping Host Publisher Server, and supplying passwords during startup
  • License management: changing the allowed number of licenses on a server running one or more instances of Host Publisher Server JVMs
  • Connection and connection pool administration: displaying pool definitions, pool status, and the status of active connections for Host Publisher Server
  • Management of user lists
  • Application administration: deploying applications, deleting applications, and deleting files that are no longer needed
  • Problem determination: viewing trace and log files, and setting various options for tracing and logging
  • XML Legacy Gateway administration: configuring the XML Legacy Gateway to access hosts and host applications, and creating a portal for accessing hosts and host applications

Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Support

Enterprise JavaBeans is a server-side component architecture that enables rapid development of versatile, reusable, portable applications. The EJB technology delivers benefits that can address the concerns of enterprise development teams, such as:

  • Reduced time to market for mission-critical applications
  • Enhanced scalability and portability
  • Reduced development cost of enterprise scale applications

Host Publisher Studio's Host Access and Database Access now includes the option to generate EJB support for Host Publisher Integration Objects. With this new EJB support Host Publisher can be used to provide existing host application access to new EJB-based WebSphere applications.

Express Logon

This function allows a user with a Web browser certificate to log on to a 3270 application without having to enter the user ID and password. Instead, the X.509 digital certificate is processed in cooperation with RACF® to authenticate the user. One advantage of using this function is that it may reduce the time spent by an administrator maintaining host user IDs and passwords. It may also reduce the number of user IDs and passwords that users have to remember.

JavaServer Pages (JSP) 1.0 Support

WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 now supports JSP 1.0. Because Host Publisher no longer supports 0.91 JSPs, migration of pages created by a previous version of Host Publisher is required. You can choose when and how you migrate:

  • When Host Publisher Server is installed
  • Using the command line on Host Publisher Server
  • When an application using 0.91 JSPs is opened in the Host Publisher Studio
  • When an 0.91 JSP is imported into the Host Publisher Studio
  • Using the command line on the Host Publisher Studio

WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 provides a migration facility called JSPMigrator to assist the user with the migration procedures.

Host Access Advanced Screen Recognition

In addition to the ability to recognize screens by text area, cursor position, and number of fields, WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 provides the following recognition capabilities:

  • Comparison of text case (text area recognition).
  • Comparison of text color to a specified color. You can change the coordinates of the color region and select different background and foreground colors.
  • Comparison of a region to a value. You can change the start and end position coordinates of the defined region on the terminal screen.
  • Comparison of two region values. You can change the start and end position coordinates of the first and second regions you define on the terminal screen.
  • Multiple screen recognition criteria can be combined to form a logical expression for a single screen. You can choose whether each criterion is optional or non-optional.
  • Logical NOT. You can match a specified criterion or not match a specified criterion.

Play Another Macro

Using the Host Publisher Studio's Host Access to record a macro for an Integration Object that uses chaining is now easier. If you are recording an Integration Object that is in the middle or last in the chain, you no longer have to manually navigate your terminal screen to your starting point before you begin recording your data macro. Instead, Host Access has a new function called Play Another Macro. This allows you to select another macro, for example, the data macro of the Integration Object that is first in the chain, and play that macro. Your terminal screen will be navigated through your selected macro.

Euro Currency

This program is EuroReady.

For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at:

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third-party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third-party attached hardware. In these instances, IBM is not in a position to assert that these third-party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:

  • Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules
  • Built in appropriate function

The above must be clearly demonstrated by:

  • Detailing euro related requirements
  • Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
  • Declaring when the implementation will be generally available

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the solution specification, as described in the contracts document.

Product Positioning

WebSphere Host Publisher focuses on consolidating multiple existing applications, without modification, to present a single integrated view in a Web browser. This leverages security, scalability, and availability features that are essential for the deployment of e-business applications. It delivers a quick and easy way for companies to implement e-business applications by extending existing applications to the Internet. It is primarily intended for the legacy extension space with little or no new business logic. WebSphere tools, like WebSphere Studio, may be used to add new business logic to a Host Publisher implementation if needed.

WebSphere focuses on providing infrastructure for developing and deploying server-side Java applications as well as tools to develop, deploy, and manage Web sites efficiently. It provides a robust Java infrastructure for the development and execution of Java applications, EJBs, and servlets. It is primarily intended for adding new business logic to existing applications or deploying new Web applications.

WebSphere Host Publisher is IBM's answer for extending host information to Web users and to new WebSphere Web applications:

  • It does not require the browser to be Java enabled.
  • It does not require changes to the existing applications.
  • Generated Integration Objects can be accessed by WebSphere applications or to create HTML pages.
  • It is ideal for large number of users connected for short periods of time.
  • Users are typically not familiar with green screens and the location of input fields.
  • Java programmers need not be familiar with programming techniques to access legacy systems.
  • Access capabilities are extended beyond 3270 and 5250 to include Java, JDBC, and VT.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities

License Management

The authorized use of WebSphere Host Publisher is based on the internal use of the Server component and is measured by the number of concurrent sessions/connections to your existing applications. Examples of sessions/connections would be the Host Publisher connected to existing applications through TN3270, TN5250, VT, or JDBC connections. The license to Host Publisher includes an initial authorization for 50 sessions/connections.

The WebSphere Host Publisher provides the flexibility for both end users and Web applications to access a broad range of existing application data and services. The usage license, based on concurrent session/connections provides a pricing structure that supports the wide range of potential Host Publisher customer implementations.

For planning purposes:

  • Assume each concurrent physical end user will require a session/connection to an existing application
  • Count Web application requests of Host Publisher to access existing application data and services for licensing purposes
  • Acquire the required additional usage, above the 50 concurrent session/connections provided with the basic license, by ordering the appropriate number of the "usage pack" feature for additional sessions/connections

WebSphere Host Publisher V3.5 includes tools for license management. The tools are included in the program package on the CD-ROM and are installed along with the product. During installation, you are prompted to enter the amount of usage (concurrent sessions/connections purchased).

If the actual usage exceeds the amount of usage purchased, then an error message is logged. No product function is disabled even in the case of the licenses being exceeded. You are expected to monitor the log and purchase a license for additional usage if you exceed your initial licensed usage quantity.

Registration

WebSphere Host Publisher will include IBM's Product Registration Tool, which can be used for registering the product. After you install WebSphere Host Publisher, you can register the first time you start the product.

Direct Customer Support: Direct customer support is provided by Personal Systems or AIX SupportLines, as applicable. The license to the Program includes an initial authorization for 50 concurrent sessions/connections. Authorization for additional use may be acquired separately.
  • The Host Publisher Studio component of the Program runs only in the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 operating environments and is used to customize and develop Host Publisher applications.
