Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 Extends the Effectiveness and Usability of Oracle8 and Oracle8i Databases
At a Glance
More effectively than ever before, V2.2 of Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle brings all the benefits of Tivoli Storage Manager to protecting Oracle8 and Oracle8i databases with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN). Supporting Oracle 8.1's newly introduced RMAN Media Management API V2, this powerful application interface:

Tivoli® Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 adds new usability and effectiveness to Oracle8 and Oracle8i environments, by further extending the centralized, automated power of Tivoli Storage Manager to data backed up by Oracle RMAN.
Setup of Tivoli Data Protection is simpler than ever before. Elimination of the need to enter environmental variables significantly reduces opportunity for human error in the setup process. Problem determination is also simplified by the new Tivoli configuration utility. Ease of use is added to the new Oracle 8.1 RMAN Duplex Copy feature, which enables multiple copies on different media.
A multi-buffering feature compensates for slower networks with tunable multi-buffer caching during backups. A new synchronization utility enables more effective space reclamation on the Tivoli Storage Manager server by identifying and optionally deleting obsolete backups.
This release adds Solaris 8 and HP-UX 64-bit support to 64-bit support already available for AIX® 4.3.3 and Solaris 7. This release also adds support for the Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature in Windows 2000 and Windows NT environments.
Maximizing Tivoli Storage Manager
Tivoli Data Protection interfaces between Oracle RMAN and Tivoli Storage Manager to enable use of Tivoli Storage Manager's powerful capabilities that include:
Refer to the Hardware and Software Requirements section.
Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle is an application interface to enable connection between Oracle8 and Oracle8i Recovery Manager (RMAN) and any Tivoli Storage Manager server. This application uses the Tivoli Storage Manager API.
Oracle RMAN performs backup and restore of Oracle databases. After Oracle RMAN initiates a backup or restore, Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle acts as the interface to Tivoli Storage Manager, enabling effective application of Tivoli Storage Manager storage management functions to the data.
The Oracle RMAN can perform:
RMAN API V2 Support
Oracle 8.1 has introduced a new RMAN Media Management API V2, which is supported by Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2.
RMAN Duplex Copy Feature Support
Oracle8i RMAN V2.0 has new functionality. One such feature is Duplex Backup Copy, which permits the customer to make multiple copies of a backup on different media. This feature can be enabled by defining multiple management classes in the Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 option file.
Multi-Buffering of RMAN Data Transfers
During a backup, the network is often the bottleneck. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 introduces a new option to turn on multi-buffering. If this option is used, the data buffers sent from RMAN are saved in Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle internal buffers, instead of being sent directly to the Tivoli Storage Manager server across the network. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle then starts a new thread which will pick up these internal buffers and send them to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. In this way, RMAN does not need to wait for each actual data transfer to be completed via the network before reading more data. In many cases, this buffering can increase backup performance.
New Synchronization Utility
The synchronization utility in Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 will make more space available on the Tivoli Storage Manager server by identifying and removing backups that have been deleted from the Oracle catalog. When deleting backup sets using Oracle8 RMAN, in earlier RMAN versions, RMAN deletes the recovery catalog entries before receiving confirmation from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. In the case where deletion from the server was not successful, these backup sets are no longer identifiable through the recovery catalog. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle includes a new utility that reconciles these discrepancies by displaying and, optionally, deleting files that exist on the Tivoli Storage Manager server but are no longer in the recovery catalog, allowing the user to reclaim lost space on the Tivoli Storage Manager server.
Additional Usability Enhancements
The new configuration utility makes setup of Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle easier than ever before.
A new options file centralizes information for setup. Environment variables are no longer needed. This simplifies the establishment of multiple sessions, and significantly reduces the opportunity for human error associated with entering environmental variables for individual sessions.
In addition, the new tdpoconf utility will be a great help in solving problems that can be associated with setup. For example, if the password file is not initialized properly, tdpoconf will report this error immediately, and so remove the complications that can result if this error goes undetected.
New 64-bit Support for Sun Solaris 8 and HP-UX 11
Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle continues our customer commitment by adding 64-bit support for Solaris 8 and HP-UX 11 in this release.
Effective Use of the Power of Tivoli Storage Manager
The Tivoli Storage Manager server's capabilities include:
During operation of Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, the Tivoli Storage Manager server manages the location of every object and manages the devices.
If additional space savings are desired in cases of very high redo log file activity, customers can take advantage of the Hierarchical Storage Management functions on the Tivoli Storage Manager AIX or Solaris clients by ordering the Space Management product, 5698-SPM. Refer to the Reference Information section to obtain ordering information for Space Management.
The Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature provides the capability for LAN-free data transfer for Oracle8 and Oracle8i database data on Windows NT and Windows 2000. LAN-free data transfer exploits the SAN path by enabling Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle to backup and restore data from a SAN-attached tape library that can be shared by Windows NT and Windows 2000 Tivoli Storage Manager servers.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities
Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 has been reviewed and an IBM
accessibility checklist has been completed with no deviations required.
This statement applies to Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 only,
and may not apply to corequisite products.
This program is not impacted by euro currency.
Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle acts with Tivoli Storage Manager, the Tivoli Storage Manager Client API, and Oracle8 or Oracle8i's RMAN to maximize the control and efficiency of backup/restore processes for Oracle8 and Oracle8i databases. It saves the time of key people and processes with enhancements that simplify configuration and improve usability, increases backup performance of slower networks, frees space on the Tivoli Storage Management server, and increases usability and flexibility of Oracle 8.1 RMAN's Duplex Copy feature that enables multiple backup copies to be made on different media.
Additional effectiveness in data protection for the Oracle environment, beyond the management functions called for by backup and restore operations, can be realized through use of related Tivoli products outlined below.
The following products are available to more effectively ensure business continuance through unaffected availability with configurations including IBM's Enterprise Storage Server or EMC's Symmetrix:
These products, together with Tivoli Storage Manager, bring a strong family of effective data backup, restore, and management functions to Oracle and R/3 data in the R/3 environment.
