Now you can automate many tasks related to the management of your environment and can install software faster and more easily with the combined enhancements found in Tivoli® Software Distribution (TSD) 4.1 and Tivoli Management Framework (TMF) 3.7.1.

Tivoli Software Distribution (TSD) 4.1 is an application that can install and configure software across homogeneous or multiplatform enterprise networks. It can:
The remote, receiving systems can be configured with UNIX®, Windows NT®, Windows® 98, Windows 2000, NetWare, OS/400®, or OS/2® operating systems.
TSD 4.1 can enhance the Software Package Editor, a package preparation facility that provides several ways to create and edit software packages for distribution. The Software Package Editor makes use of a simplified single file format, called the Software Package, for content packaging. Software packages can be generated by different means, including:
All of the techniques used to create software packages are based on the single file format of the software package. Therefore, regardless of the technique used, the resulting package will be identical.
Central Point of Control for Automated Software Distribution
With TSD, you can establish a central point of control for automated software distribution. Through use of variables, which allow you to make the software package more generic, and conditions, which allow you to define the circumstances under which a specific action will take place, you can expand the flexibility of the software package. This can eliminate the need to create a different package for each type of platform within your enterprise. With software and hardware dependencies , you can ensure the package is installed only if the necessary prerequisites are satisfied. With software package version checking , you can prevent the installation of down-level software and can ensure the software package status is consistent. These powerful tools allow you to make good use of your time and resources.
In addition, TSD supports some common third party packaging formats, and content prepared in these formats and their associated utilities and response files can be incorporated within the Software Package.
The Activity Planner is a TSD feature that can improve administrator efficiency and can enhance scalability by enabling you to define activities, schedule their execution, submit them to be executed, monitor, and control their outcome. Activities can be single operations that are performed on a set of targets at specified times. Operations can include TSD 4.1 operations or Tivoli Management Framework (TMF) tasks. Operations can have dependencies among them which define circumstances under which the operation should be executed.
Change Configuration Management Helps Manage Software Changes
Change Configuration Management (CCM) , together with the Activity Planner, can support software distribution management and change management in a large network by managing groups of workstations as single entities. CCM can help you to manage frequent software changes to different groups of workstations by:
With CCM, you can manage software by grouping software packages and subscribers into a reference model that represents a workstation profile. Using this grouping, CCM can help to ensure that the target workstations are maintained at the specified level. The workstation reference model can enable you to manage workstation software based on the role the workstation plays within the network.
Byte-level-difference can improve network utilization by reducing the amount of data that needs to be distributed to install updated versions of software packages. By creating and distributing a package that contains only the delta between two versions of the same package, administrators can reduce the network load, improving the efficiency and scalability of the distribution and installation process.
The enhanced TSD Web Interface can improve the efficiency of mobile users by providing a powerful set of high-performance options that enable Web users on UNIX and Windows endpoints to perform a large number of operations (such as, download, install, uninstall, subscribe to, and verify software packages) with an immediate update of the status. It also provides access to CCM reference models to which you can subscribe and be automatically notified when an update is available. A local facility can enable Web users to manage locally installed software packages.
Data Moving Service Helps Maintain Data Consistency
In any distributed systems environment, maintaining consistency of data across the system can be a major problem. Data updates have to be distributed from a central point, and information collected locally must be retrieved for central consolidation and storage. The Data Moving Service provided with TSD 4.1 addresses this problem by integrating data movement capabilities into the Software Package Distribution process. This provides support for:
Support for Mobile Users
Mobile users are becoming a large part of the workstations that must be managed in large distributed systems. These types of users are difficult to manage because frequently they are not connected to the enterprise network when distributions occur. TSD 4.1, in conjunction with the Mobile Interface in the TMF 3.7.1, can provide the capability for mobile users to:
Pristine Tool Enables Installation
Incorporating new workstations into the management environment can be a time consuming process especially if these workstations do not have an operating system installed. Using the TSD 4.1 Pristine Tool you can now install new operating systems and the Tivoli Management Agent. At the end of the installation process, you will have a workstation that is ready to be managed by Tivoli.
Through integration with other Tivoli applications, the capabilities available to an administrator are expanded beyond distribution. A system administrator can:

The following tables list the estimated disk space required for the TMF. The estimated disk space includes space for:
When binaries and manual pages can be shared from a Network File System (NFS) file server, the disk space required is minimized without affecting performance.
Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not share these files across TMR boundaries. Upgrading to future releases and installing Tivoli service packs cannot be completed on a TMR-by-TMR basis if these files are shared across TMR boundaries.
Windows NT binaries can be shared from a New Technology File System (NTFS) file server with some performance loss. For this reason, the Tivoli server should always have a local copy of the binaries. The database must be locally installed on an NTFS file system.
As each Tivoli product is added to the Tivoli installation, additional disk space will be required. Consult the appropriate application guide for application planning information and disk space requirements.

The new NetWare gateway supports the following applications:

Interoperability Whether different versions of the same Tivoli Enterprise product can communicate with each other.
TMF 3.7.1 is interoperable with Version 3.6, Version 3.6.1, Version 3.6.2, Version 3.6.3, and Version 3.6.4.
TMF 3.2 endpoint managers and gateways are not interoperable with Version 3.7.1.
When you upgrade your Tivoli Management Region (TMR) server to TMF 3.7.1, the endpoint manager is upgraded.
It is recommended that you immediately upgrade your 3.6 gateways after
upgrading your TMR server. You can upgrade 3.6 endpoints using a
script to automatically upgrade an endpoint the first time.

Security, Auditability, and Control
TSD uses the security and auditability features of the operating system software and the TMF.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

To order a basic license, specify the program number, feature number 9001 for asset registration, and the feature number of the desired distribution medium. Also, specify the one-time charge (OTC) feature number from the tables below in the quantity desired (maximum quantity of 250).

Tivoli Systems Support
Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a no-charge (NC) order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.
Prior to the end of the first 12 months support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable OTC feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the NC support period.

The Standard Support option, Standard-24 Support option, and Select Support option are not transferable among the Tivoli Enterprise products. If support is desired, support option feature numbers must be ordered for each licensed product. The quantity of the billable feature numbers for support must be equal to the quantity of Tivoli Management Points for a licensed product.
All other languages distribution medium with translated hardcopy publications will be available June 22, 2001, for TMF and June 15, 2001, for TSD.
OS/390® components of TSD (5698-SWD), are unaffected by this announcement.
