Overview

The IBM Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) Version 3.2 software enhances IBM Clustered Enterprise Server option through new support for 7026-H80 and 7026-M80 Servers via either SP™ attachment or server clusters.

The PSSP software provides a comprehensive suite of applications for the installation, operation, management, and administration of the RS/6000® SP, attached servers, or Clustered Enterprise Servers from a single point-of-control. These applications aid the operator/administrator in performing the tasks of:

  • Installation
  • Configuration management
  • Operation
  • File management
  • User management
  • Job management
  • Accounting
  • Change management
  • Security
  • Availability
  • Problem management
  • Support of the high-speed interconnect fabric

Key Prerequisites

  • RS/6000 SP system, IBM e(logo)server pSeries 7017 Models S85 and S80, and/or 7026 Models H80 and M80 Clustered Enterprise servers
  • Control workstations
  • AIX® Version 4.3.3 with 4330-08 maintenance package, or later

Planned Availability Date

April 27, 2001

Description

PSSP Version 3.2 enhances the IBM Clustered Enterprise Server option through new support for H80 (7026-H80) and M80 (7026-M80) Servers.

  • pSeries 7017 Models S85 and S80, and 7026 Models H80 and M80 Clustered Enterprise servers

PSSP is now supported on a hardware configuration consisting of only a control workstation and one or more Clustered Enterprise Servers. This configuration does not contain a physical SP frame or any SP switch. It is a clustered set of servers centrally managed through PSSP software from a single hardware control point, the control workstation.

With no physical SP frame to house a switch, this must be a switchless system. Therefore, all limitations that apply to switchless systems in all the SP and related software, also apply to these servers.

In order to provide this support:

    1. PSSP no longer requires that the first frame in a system be a physical SP frame — it can now also be any one of the pSeries 7017 Models S85 and S80, and/or 7026 Models H80 and M80 Clustered Enterprise servers.
    2. PSSP no longer requires that at least one physical SP frame exist in a system. To remove this requirement, system partitioning is disabled for such hardware configurations.

The hardware configuration for Clustered Enterprise Servers is similar to the SP-attached server in a switchless environment, except that having at least one SP node in one frame as the first node and frame in the system is no longer required. Only pSeries 7017 Models S85 and S80, and/or 7026 Models H80 and M80 Clustered Enterprise servers are supported in this clustered environment. No other RS/6000 products are currently supported.

Since there may be no SP system associated with these servers, there is no way to order the required cables and PSSP software from the SP sessions on the configurator in the absence of an existing SP system serial number. Therefore, customers must purchase the required RS-232 cables and the required PSSP software through the RS/6000 configurator session.

Statement of General Direction

The pSeries 680 and RS/6000 S80, S7A, and S70 cluster nodes currently can be interconnected with the high-performance SP Switch and RS/6000 SP nodes. Today's announcement extends this capability to RS/6000 M80 and H80 nodes. IBM intends to provide the switch interconnect capability for clusters without SP nodes. IBM intends to deliver this capability on the SP Switch in the second quarter of 2001, and later on the SP Switch2.

It is our intent that this is the last release of PSSP that will include the Performance Toolbox Parallel Extensions (PTPE) functions.

Note: These statements represent the current intentions of IBM. IBM development plans are subject to change or withdrawal without further notice. Any reliance on this Statement of General Direction is at the relying party's sole risk and will not create any liability or obligation for IBM.

Technical Information

Hardware Requirements

  • RS/6000 SP, IBM e(logo)server pSeries 7017 Models S85 and S80, and/or 7026 Models H80 and M80 Clustered Enterprise servers, including one control workstation for each RS/6000 SP system, or cluster of Servers. The HACWS function requires two control workstations. For Recoverable Virtual Shared Disk, any twin-tailed disk supported by the Logical Volume Manager running on AIX Version 4.3.3 operating system is required.

Note: For the control workstation recommended configuration, refer to Planning Volume 1, Hardware and Physical Environment (GA22-7280).

  • The control workstation must be operational before the installation of an SP system or Clustered Servers. It also must be operational before the customer service representative for the system is called for maintenance.

The capacity requirements of the applications on, and connectivity to, the supported nodes, attached servers, and clustered servers must be carefully evaluated.

Software Requirements

This announcement does not affect any previously announced requirements or prerequirements. Refer to Software Announcement 200-222 , dated July 18, 2000, for original information.

The 7026-H80 and 7026-M80 servers require:

  • AIX Version 4.3.3 with 4330-08 maintenance package, or later
  • IBM Parallel System Support Programs for AIX, Version 3.2, or later with APAR IY16350

Compatibility: This announcement does not affect any previously announced information. Refer to Software Announcement 200-222 , dated July 18, 2000, for original information.

Limitations: This announcement does not affect any previously announced limitations. Refer to Software Announcement 200-222 , dated July 18, 2000, for original information.

Clustered Enterprise Servers: With no physical SP frame to house a switch, this must be a switchless system. Therefore, all limitations that apply to switchless systems in all the SP and related software also apply to Clustered Servers (for example, no GPFS or PE user-space support). Virtual Shared Disks are not supported in this environment. Clustered Servers will not be partition capable. System partitioning will be disabled for Clustered Servers hardware configurations. HACWS is not supported on Clustered Servers.

The maximum number of clustered servers supported by PSSP Version 3.2 is 32, up to a maximum of 16 that can be pSeries 7017 Model S85 or S80 Clustered Enterprise servers. This means that PSSP Version 3.2 supports a maximum of 32 7026-H80 and/or 7026-M80 servers, and a maximum of 16 IBM pSeries 7017 Model S85 and/or S80 Clustered Enterprise servers, but that the total of supported servers can never exceed 32 in a cluster.

Ordering Information

This announcement does not affect any previously announced features.

Refer to Software Announcement 200-222 , dated July 18, 2000, for original information.

Program Name: Parallel System Support Programs Version 3.2

New users of PSSP Version 3.2 should specify machine type 5765, Model D51, asset feature number 9001, and the feature number equal to the total number of desired licenses to be installed times the quantity of authorizations. An authorization is defined as an instance of the PSSP code running on any RS/6000 server or SP node. In all cases, the CWS does not require a separate authorization but is entitled as part of the system. For example, if ordering PSSP for 16 7026-H80 or 7026-M80 servers, order the feature number for program name and number with a quantity of 16.
