Overview

The IBM Information Management System meets the demands of today's evolving e-business marketplace in database and transaction processing by delivering integrity, capability, and performance that you have learned to expect from IBM.

The IMS™ Database Manager (IMS DB) and IMS Transaction Manager (IMS TM) are enhanced in IMS Version 7 to help enable you to shape how you:

  • Transform the way you do business
  • Build e-business applications that tolerate the rigors of doing business on the Internet
  • Run a scalable, available, safe environment
  • Leverage what you learn, and mine your information to make better decisions

IMS Workload Router (WLR) and Dynamic Resource Control Facility (DRC) now support IMS V7 and can help you better manage this new system environment.

The IMS Workload Router works with the IMS TM to provide for the transparent routing or balancing of a transaction workload among two or more IBM systems through Multiple Systems Coupling (MSC). This makes WLR adaptable to a variety of system configurations.

The Dynamic Resource Control Facility can help you manage your IMS system for maximum performance. This online monitor puts comprehensive resource information at your fingertips and helps you spot and resolve potential problems before they become critical. With DRC, you get many of the tools you need to manage your system effectively. DRC provides displays regarding address spaces, dependent regions, control blocks, buffer pools, database usage and resources, and more. DRC functions can be executed on a remote IMS system, so you can access multiple IMS systems without a direct connection to the target system.

Ordering information is unchanged. However, you should refer to the Ordering Information section for new Basic Machine-Readable Material feature numbers.

Description

Information Management System (IMS) Workload Router

The IBM IMS/ESA® Workload Router (Workload Router) functions with the IMS Transaction Manager to distribute an IMS transaction workload among two or more IMS online systems interconnected through Multiple Systems Coupling (MSC) communications links. Workload Router offers the following features.

  • Distributes IMS transactions on predefined paths via MSC links
  • Provides for weighted distribution of IMS transactions
  • Provides for assignment of transactions or groups of transactions to a designated server system
  • Supports parallel MSC sessions between the router (front-end) and server (back-end) systems
  • Facilitates MSC Link Load balancing
  • Automatically recognizes and avoids routing transactions to unavailable server system/MSC links
  • Provides for automatic workload reconfiguration in the event of both planned and unplanned outages
  • Provides an online/real-time administrator interface for monitoring and dynamically updating the WLR configuration
  • Provides diagnostic trace facility
  • Offers server options that support both cloned and non-cloned data communications networks
  • Requires no changes to application programs

IMS Dynamic Resource Control Facility (DRC)

IMS DRC provides support for the IMS V7 operating environment. DRC is a productivity aid for both IMS systems and application programmers. There are a number of functions which assist in problem determination, resource utilization (MVS™, OS/390®, and IMS), and performance analysis (Fast Path and Full Function).

DRC offers more than 45 functions that give you valuable information — when you need it — for maximum system performance. The following is a sample of just a few of the many functions available.

  • ABND — Message Processing Region User ABEND 3701
  • CDLS — Contents Directory List
  • DBAL — Data Base Allocation
  • DBDX — Data Base Cross Reference
  • DBST — Data Base Status
  • DEBP — DEDB Buffer Pool Report
  • DISA — OS/390, MVS Region Summary
