Overview

IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms V7.1 can help you attain and exceed your e-business objectives through efficient access and delivery of your core business content.

Content Manager V7.1 is an enterprise-wide solution for storage, management, and distribution of all types of digital content, including text, XML and HTML files, document images, electronic office documents, audio, and video. It also is designed to manage and administer any file type, providing logically organized, central and/or distributed repositories of unstructured information commonly located in file cabinets, microfilm archives and multiple, unrelated file servers across an enterprise.

What's New

  • New document management capabilities further expand the ease of managing and working with electronic office documents in IBM Content Manager. With version control you can create multiple versions of documents and objects, including multiple versions of specific document annotations. ODMA support allows you to store and access these electronic documents easily from ODMA V2.0-compliant Windows™ desktop applications.
  • Windows 2000 Server Logo Certification provides single sign-on capability where users can sign on once to access both Windows and Content Manager on enabled Windows servers.
  • Support for multivalue attributes allows documents and other content types such as audio clips to be identified by multiple authors or composers.
  • Index Class subsets now allow system administrators to restrict viewing of specific subsets of a document's index attributes to protect sensitive information.
  • Multiple Windows client enhancements include a drag and drop interface to move or copy documents from one folder or workbasket to an other, and more flexible user options to view workload spread across workbaskets in the system.
  • Tivoli® Ready Certification allows you to view the overall topology of the Library and Object Servers through the Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager (GEM) or the Tivoli Enterprise Console® (TEC). You can also view and monitor certain critical server processes, plus start and stop the servers from the GEM console.

With these new enhancements, Content Manager continues to provide the foundation to enable content to be delivered to e-business applications. Content Manager is available for Windows NT™, Windows 2000, and AIX® platforms.

Description

This integrated Content Manager offering provides a comprehensive approach to the management of all aspects of digital information processing. Complementing the Content Manager offering, the Enterprise Information Portal Client Kit for Content Manager provides e-business enablement through browser/thin client support, advanced application development components, and full text search. In addition, computer output management capabilities can be enabled through the addition of IBM Content Manager OnDemand, available as a separately priced option.

Content Manager provides tangible and strategic values that include:

  • Capture, organize, store and manage many forms of business content into a single repository — including image or electronic office documents, facsimiles, XML documents, electronic forms, audio, and video.
  • Enhanced customer care by allowing Call Center representatives to quickly view a client's complete folder of information, for example, correspondence received, internally generated memoranda, forms processed
  • Reduced operational costs through elimination of storage space, manual document delivery processes, and microfilm operations
  • Improved productivity levels across an organization through intuitive, rapid information retrievals, or by invoking e-document access directly from business applications, integrated with a variety of advanced programming interfaces
  • Capitalize on new e-business opportunities through cost-effective electronic delivery of content as requested by your customers partners or suppliers
  • Protection and preservation of intellectual property in various physical formats through digitization of the content

IBM Content Manager V7.1 builds on the capabilities of previous versions and delivers an enhanced robust document management solution to suit the needs of your enterprise. Enhancements include:

  • New versioning capabilities that provide the ability to create multiple versions of annotations to documents made in the standard viewer and of documents that have been modified in an alternate viewer. You can now store documents, create new versions of those documents, as well as create new versions when annotations are changed or added. This enables a history for audit purposes.
  • ODMA support has been added. You can now save or open a document directly from your ODMA V2.0 enabled desktop applications (such as Microsoft Word, Lotus® WordPro, Visio and others) into your Content Manager system. The integration of your desktop application with Content Manager is seamless.
  • Content Manager V7.1 is now Windows 2000 Certified. IBM Content Manager Windows servers now run as Windows NT services. Active Directory eliminates the need for administrators to manually update application clients when the network location of a server changes. Single sign-on can be enabled so that users signing on to Windows 2000 servers will be automatically signed on to Content Manager windows servers.
  • Replicas of object servers can now be created. Replicas allow remote locations to have local copies of centrally stored documents. This can reduce bandwidth requirements and provide additional disaster protection as data can be restored from a local replica. Centrally-stored documents are automatically updated when changes are made to replicas.
  • Content Manager now supports running multiple Library Servers on a single system. This allows you to run multiple distinct Content Manager applications or environments on a single physical server. Based on system configuration and resources, there may be a limit to the number of Library Servers that can coexist on a single server while meeting performance objectives.
  • Content Manager has been certified as Tivoli Ready which means you can view the overall topology of the Library and Object Servers through the Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager (GEM) or the Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC). You can also view and monitor certain critical server processes, plus start and stop the servers from the GEM console.

    For additional details, refer to:

  • New problem determination tools have been added to improve the speed of diagnosing problems.
  • Multivalue attribute support is included for custom applications. This enables multiple values to be set. For example, the author field could have multiple authors.
  • Improved reliability, performance, and ease of use in client processes and object handling is included.
  • Client enhancements deliver a drag and drop interface to move or copy documents from one folder or workbasket to another, and more flexible user options to view workload spread across workbaskets in the system.
  • New User Option Exits allow the addition of custom options to the "Actions" Menu, allowing the user to execute any external program or function while working on items in Content Manager.
  • Improvements in object indexing now support pull down menus which can be easily set up to display a range of appropriate selectable index value options relevant for each index class and attribute field.
  • Users can now indicate a specific set of workbaskets for which they want to see item counts. At sites with large numbers of workbaskets, this is useful for users who want to know how many items are in some workbaskets but who do not want to pay the performance price to get counts for all the workbaskets.
  • New basic search memory feature that remembers the last index class that was used for a search. While the Advanced Search functions are still necessary for users who need to make complex queries or save multiple types of searches, this enhancement is convenient for users who often need to make simple searches over the same index class.
  • New Index Class Subsets allow you to customize views of Index Classes to restrict viewing of confidential information related to a particular Index Class. Initially, each Index Class has a single subset that is equivalent to the Index Class. System Administrators may then define additional subsets to limit the information that can be viewed by certain users or groups.

The Content Manager architecture is based on a triangular client/server model comprised of a Library Server, one or more Object Servers, and one or more clients.

The core of the infrastructure, the Library Server manages the Content Manager catalog information. Through the Library Server, users can locate stored objects using a variety of search technologies. Content or objects stored in Content manager are secured through user and/or group security profiles to prevent unauthorized access to the objects held in the collection. The Library Server communicates with the Object Servers to coordinate both the storage, indexing, and access to enterprise-wide business content.

Digital content is stored in the Object Servers, which can be centralized or distributed across an enterprise network to optimize user access and central system administration. The Object Server provides Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM), which automatically transitions documents from high speed magnetic storage to nearline optical storage. This HSM functionality maximizes performance on active documents, while minimizing cost on long term archived documents.

The end user (or client application) receives documents or video/audio stream requested from the Object Servers regardless of where the data is stored. You can have many clients connected to the Library and Object Servers in an IBM Content Manager system, including Web browser clients (available with the EIP Client Kit for Content Manager) or an out-of-the-box Windows Client Application. Content Manager can contain a wide range of digital formats such as text, image, video, and audio data.

The IBM EIP Client Kit for Content Manager or IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1, in addition, providing browser client access to Content Manager repositories, provides a wide variety of application programming interfaces (APIs), including Java™, C++, and ActiveX for Content Manager solution development and integration.

Euro Currency

This program is EuroReady.

For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at:

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:

  • Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules
  • Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by:

  • Detailing euro related requirements
  • Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
  • Declaring when the implementation will be generally available
The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.

License Information: Your license to the Program entitles you to install program servers on one physical server or node. If you wish to install additional program servers on additional physical servers or nodes, you must acquire additional PoEs

Concurrent Users Feature

The number of concurrent users is defined as the maximum number of users connected to the program servers at one time. You must acquire an authorization for each concurrent user. The number of concurrent users may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable Concurrent User PoE. Each Content Manager Concurrent User license authorizes one user to connect to one Content Manager program server across any of the following platforms, Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, and OS/390.

Gateway Feature

Gateway Feature must be acquired for application logons to the Program server that support a specified number of users for a defined period of time. One Gateway Feature is required for every 20 individual users over a one hour period of time who will access the Program server via the application logons. For example, if shared application logons will allow up to 200 individual users to access the Program server during a peak usage hour of the day, then a quantity of 10 Gateway Features would be required for appropriate use authorization. You must acquire appropriate PoEs for Gateway Application Access supporting your defined use. One Content Manager Gateway Feature license authorizes application logons to one Content Manager program server across any of the following platforms, Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, and OS/390.

Limited Use DB2 UDB Components

The program includes portions of DB2 Universal Database. You are authorized to install and use these components only in association with your licensed use of the IBM Content Manager Program for the storage and management of data used or generated by the program, and not for other data management purposes. For example, this license does not include inbound connections to the database from other applications for queries or report generation. You are authorized to install and use these components only with and on the same licensed processors as the program.

Usage of Tivoli Storage Manager

Your license to the IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms V7.1 entitles you to 770 Tivoli Management Points (TMPs) for Tivoli Storage Manager. If your actual deployment of Tivoli Storage Manager exceeds 770 TMPs, you must acquire additional TMPs.

Tivoli Management Points (TMPs) describes the license metric under Tivoli Value-Based Pricing. Program entitlement for Tivoli Storage Manager is determined by the number of authorized TMPs. Refer to Software Announcement 200-017 , dated February 15, 2000, for specific information concerning Value-Based Pricing for Tivoli Programs.
