Overview

Tivoli® Data Protection for Microsoft™ SQL Server Version 2.2 and Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server Version 2.2 complement the Tivoli Storage Management product set. They allow you to perform online backups of the Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Exchange databases to Tivoli Storage Manager storage to help ensure that your data remains safe and secure.

Version 2.2 provides you with new functionality as well as support for the 2000 releases of Microsoft SQL and Exchange. Most significantly, the new version of these Tivoli Data Protection products supports one of the important features of Tivoli Storage Management — automatic expiration and version control by policy. This support frees users from having to explicitly delete backup objects in the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

In addition to the Tivoli Data Protection products for the SQL and Exchange databases, Tivoli Data Protection products are also available to provide online backup and restore for Oracle, Informix, Lotus® Domino™, and R/3.

What's New in Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server Version 2.2

Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and SQL 2000 introduced many new backup and restore capabilities. Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server, Version 2.2 supports these capabilities by adding support for:

  • Differential backup/restore of SQL databases
  • Backup/restore of individual file groups, individual database files, as well as a set of file groups and files
  • SQL Data Striping
  • Exploitation of SQL 2000
  • Restoring to a Standby SQL server
  • Restoring to different physical file names
  • Exploitation of the Windows™ 2000 Installer

What's New in Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server Version 2.2

This new version of Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server provides support for:

  • Exchange 2000, including support for multiple storage groups, backup/restore of individual databases within a storage group, and parallel backup/restore of separate storage groups
  • Exploitation of the Windows 2000 Installer

Description

Automatic Expiration and Version Control by Tivoli Storage Manager Server Policy

Version 1.1 of the Tivoli Data Protection products for Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server stores each backup object with a unique name, thereby circumventing the automatic expiration and version control provided by the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Now the new Version 2.2 provides significant changes in the backup object naming and handling to allow exploitation of these automatic data management features in Tivoli Storage Manager.

LAN-free Support

The Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature provides the capability for LAN-free data transfer for Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Exchange database data on Windows NT™ and Windows 2000. LAN-free data transfer exploits the SAN path by enabling Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server and Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server to backup and restore data from a SAN-attached tape library that can be shared by the Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX®, and Solaris Tivoli Storage Manager servers. This support was first made available for Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server in Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.1 and, with Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.1.2, it has been extended to support Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server, among other Tivoli Data Protection products. This means that LAN-free data transfer is now available for levels of SQL Server and Exchange Server that are supported by Version 1 and Version 2 of these Tivoli Data Protection products.

Data Striping

Data striping provides the ability to use multiple parallel sessions to the Tivoli Storage Manager server to backup and restore data for a single SQL database. Use of parallel sessions allows data throughput to be maximized though the amount of improvement will depend on the capacities of the hardware and network involved. Exploitation of SQL data striping can greatly improve the manageability of Very Large Databases (VLDB).

Exploitation of SQL 2000

Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server supports the capabilities introduced with SQL 2000:

  • Restore to a named mark
  • Partial restores
  • Support multiple SQL server instances on the same machine
  • Restore using fewer data stripes than were used on backup

Windows 2000 Exploitation

InstallShield for Windows installer is used to be compatible with the Microsoft installation processes for Windows 2000.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities

Migration/Coexistence Considerations

Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server Version 2.2 and Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server Version 2.2 have changed the backup object naming conventions, file space names and placement, and meta contents to such an extent that they are completely incompatible with Version 1.1. Backup objects created by one version will not be able to be queried or restored by the other. Users will have to retain Version 1.1 for as long they retain backup objects created by Version 1.1. Both versions are able to coexist with each other. The Version 2.2 installation program will not replace any installed Version 1 application client. Because of the great number of new functional changes added in Version 2.2, the Version 2 user interfaces are not compatible with the Version 1 interfaces. No migration tool is provided to convert Version 1.1 command line scripts to Version 2.2 syntax. Users should not just blindly convert to the new version but should analyze their backup and restore procedures to determine how and where the new capabilities should be used.
