IBM announces Version 2.0 of Tivoli® Manager for Oracle providing Oracle systems management with the Tivoli Management Framework V3.6. With this upgrade, users of Oracle database servers gain additional controls (more monitors and tasks) to help manage numerous Oracle servers from one console.
Key Features and Benefits
Tivoli database managers reduce the complexity and cost of managing enterprise-wide database environments. Based on Tivoli's scalable management capabilities, Tivoli Manager for Oracle is the ideal management tool for Oracle database environments, enabling end-to-end availability of critical applications.
Tivoli Manager for Oracle provides a number of monitors, tasks, and other functions that can simultaneously be applied to hundreds of database components. This functionality represents one of the most comprehensive database availability solutions on the market today.
What's New in V2.0
V2.0 of Tivoli Manager for Oracle represents a significant upgrade to this powerful tool. This version has new and exciting function that accelerates Oracle users' management of their databases. Specifically:
Tivoli Manager for Oracle V2.0 is updated to the latest Tivoli architecture, and it is enhanced to expand the range of Oracle database management. There are exciting enhancements supporting long running processes, security, and authentication.
Enhanced Management Capabilities
Tivoli Manager for Oracle V2.0 now utilizes the full support of Tivoli Management Agent (TMA) which gives an organization the option to manage literally thousands of database endpoints with ease. New endpoint functionality guarantees authentication of access and action rights.
There are new management capabilities within the Oracle database itself. Oracle has introduced a new message queuing technology for which Tivoli has delivered management capability. For example, should a customer be using message queuing such as MQSeries®, Tivoli Manager for Oracle and Tivoli Manager for MQSeries will provide an end-to-end solution.
New monitors are introduced that better enable customer data availability. The ability to monitor index statistics, long running transaction status, and blocked transactions will help improve the performance of your database. Some new availability statistics such as data block corruption and heterogeneous services will also help.
Experienced users will welcome an improvement to the frequently used tablespace monitors. The inclusion and exclusion process is improved dramatically with a list-based process that can specify whether the items listed are to be included or excluded specifically rather than addressed in mass.
Improved Set-Up Process
The process of setting up the Tivoli Manager for Oracle has become even easier with an improved discovery process. What was originally a Tivoli task has become a more sophisticated applet. This applet will take a list of target servers and attempt to discover and register the appropriate database objects. The result is a report of either correctly registered or attempted registered Oracle objects.
Before you actually register the databases, you need to install or migrate to the new version. An easy and comprehensive migration facility will capture the old policies in place and move the existing managed node to a TMA end-point state. No management coverage will be lost as you can specify a time of overlap such that both versions, new and old, will be looking at the same Oracle object until you are ready to cut over.
Oracle Listener Support
An improved ability to monitor Oracle listeners is now available. A task that will check the listener state is available off a specified instance. In addition, an administrator can bring a listener up or down as necessary to ensure the connectivity to the overall system.
SAP R/3 Support
Oracle is the number one platform for SAP's R/3 products; and for users
of the most popular Sales and Distribution module, Tivoli Manager for
Oracle V2.0 will be a welcome addition. A typical R/3 production system
has literally thousands of tables, many of which simply hold system
information and screen data. The tables that are extremely important
include those that contain the actual business data from an
organization's transactions. Tivoli has worked with SAP, customers, and
IBM to discover these critical tables. The result is a script that will
automatically populate the necessary monitors so that your tablespaces
will be effectively monitored and your R/3 data made available.
This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its
associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing,
providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth
and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example,
hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange
accurate date data with it.
This program is not impacted by euro currency.
Tivoli Manager for Oracle and its related products provide one of the most comprehensive enterprise solutions for business entities that have responsibility for Oracle database functionality. Tivoli Manager for Oracle builds upon core Tivoli competencies while enhancing the value of other, more specialized Tivoli products.
Enhanced Database Management
Tivoli Management Agent (TMA) is now fully supported allowing organizations the option to manage literally thousands of database endpoints with ease. New endpoint functionality guarantees authentication of access and action rights.
