Overview

Your mission-critical Oracle and R/3-Oracle databases require 24x7 availability and protection. Now, two new tools can help you achieve that goal:

  • Tivoli® Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) for Oracle Databases
  • Tivoli Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server for R/3

These new products integrate and optimize the capabilities of three prerequisites:

  • Tivoli Storage Manager, Tivoli's flagship storage management product
  • Tivoli Data Protection
  • IBM's FlashCopy advanced copy functions

Using these products, you can manage all your FlashCopy and backup operations by leveraging the performance, scheduling, and media management functions of Tivoli Storage Manager.

The results? More continuous application access and better protection of data for your organization.

Planned Availability Dates

  • February 23, 2001 — Tivoli Data Protection for IBM ESS for Oracle Databases (5698-ESO)
  • May 25, 2001 — Tivoli Data Protection for IBM ESS for R/3 (5698-ESR)

Note: Tivoli Data Protection customers with AIX®-based environments and Oracle databases, who have orders on record for both ESS FlashCopy (Open platform) and Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases (5698-ESO), may request delivery of 5698-ESO, concurrently with general availability and installation of ESS FlashCopy for the Open platform. Description

Availability for Tivoli Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) for Oracle Databases and Tivoli Data Protection for IBM Enterprise Storage Server for R/3 is now announced.

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS products (5698-ESO and 5698-ESR), are supported on the AIX platform only. Both products are designed to work in conjunction with (and therefore, require) Oracle databases.

Support of IBM's FlashCopy Volumes

IBM FlashCopy is one of the Copy Services available in ESS. FlashCopy gives you the ability to create independently addressable point-in-time copies of logical volumes. These copies are not created until they are needed, and both source and target copies of the logical volumes are available immediately after the command has been processed. They can be used to run simultaneous tasks in parallel with one another.

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS integrates its processing with the FlashCopy point-in-time copies to provide high-performance, database-aware backup of a targeted application from a secondary host, while the production application remains online and fully available to users.

Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager Media Management Functions

All storage devices and media management capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager are available to Tivoli Data Protection for ESS. You can share the devices used for other backups, or give Oracle or R/3-Oracle exclusive use of certain devices and media. Lifecycle management of the media and generation of tape copies for off-site vaulting are supported.

Online, Outboard Database Backup through the Use of a Second (Backup) Host

Through use of point-in-time copies connected to a second host, the production database remains accessible to the user and nearly all the processing occurs on the secondary host, almost completely minimizing any performance impact on the production database server.

High-Performance, Multiple Data-Stream Backups

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS supports performance enhancements provided by Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle and Tivoli Data Protection for R/3, including the use of multiple, parallel backups and restores. Generally, the number of parallel sessions, which can be opened by the user via backup script configuration, will equal the number of physical storage devices (usually tape drives) available at the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Support for Oracle via the RMAN Utility and Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle

  • Tivoli Data Protection for ESS supports backup performance enhancements provided by Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle and Tivoli Data Protection for R/3 support Oracle8i databases with the Recovery Manager (RMAN). The Oracle8i RMAN performs backup (online and offline) and restore (online and offline) of Oracle databases. After Oracle8i RMAN initiates a backup or restore, Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle acts as the interface to Tivoli Storage Manager.
  • Centrally Administered and Scheduled Backup Operations: From the Tivoli Storage Manager Server, scheduling facilities can be used to schedule automatic, unattended Oracle or R/3 backups from a FlashCopy point-in-time copy. You can select when the backups occur; backups no longer have to be scheduled during off-peak hours or during maintenance windows.

Support for R/3 via the SAPDBA and BACKINT Utilities and Tivoli Data Protection for R/3

Using a point-in-time copy of the production data generated by the intelligent disk subsystem (ESS), Tivoli Data Protection for ESS provides automated functions for backup and restore of the full R/3-Oracle database under tight control of the SAP utilities SAPDBA, BRBACKUP, and BRRESTORE.

  • Backup is initiated (BRBACKUP) and executed on the backup server. The database on the production system is put in backup mode only during the short time window which is required to take a FlashCopy and mount file systems on the backup server. The execution of the backup is performed on the backup server, using a point-in-time copy of the production data via Tivoli Data Protection for R/3.
  • Restore is initiated on the production system and data is transferred from the Tivoli Storage Manager via LAN. Forward recovery can then be performed under control of SAP DBA.

Year 2000

These products are Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with their associated documentation, they are capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the products properly exchange accurate date data with them.

Euro Currency

These programs are not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

This availability announcement provides general availability dates and updated information regarding Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases and for R/3-Oracle, 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR. These products were initially announced in preview, in Software Announcement 200-243 , dated July 25, 2000.

Statement of Direction

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases, Version 1 (5698-ESO) and Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for R/3, Version 1 (5698-ESR), are currently supported by and function with AIX in the 32-bit mode only. Tivoli intends to support 64-bit mode processing with AIX 4.3.2 and/or later AIX releases. This function will either be distributed separately or be included in future releases of 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR.

Hardware Requirements

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases (5698-ESO) and Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for R/3 (5698-ESR) require ESS 2105, Model Exx or Fxx, with one FlashCopy feature 1830-1835, selected to match expected FlashCopy backup requirements. These are supported on the AIX® platform.

Software Requirements

Required supporting software for ESS, including AIX 4.3.2, or later, will be prerequisite for installation of both 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR.

Oracle databases are prerequisite for both 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR — that is, for the R/3 environment managed by 5698-ESR as well as for the Oracle-only environment managed by 5698-ESO. Oracle8i 8.1.5, or a subsequent compliant release, is required for 5698-ESO. SAP R/3 4.5B with prerequisite Oracle 8.05/6 is required for 5698-ESR.

Tivoli Storage Manager, V4.1 with the Managed System for LAN feature is prerequisite for all installations of 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR.

Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle is prerequisite for each installation of 5698-ESO.

Tivoli Data Protection for R/3 is prerequisite for each installation of 5698-ESR.

Additional software configuration requirements may be listed in the product README files.

Note: Prerequisite software products, including Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1, Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, or Tivoli Data Protection for R/3, must be purchased separately, and are not included or packaged with the purchase of 5698-ESO or 5698-ESR.

Limitations: The products in this announcement, Tivoli Data Protection for ESS products 5698-ESO and 5698-ESR, support AIX in 32-bit mode only, until further notice.

Installations that have not yet installed ESS or a FlashCopy feature should follow the Installation and Assurance guidelines for the ESS, prior to installing 5698-ESR or 5698-ESO.

Security, Auditability, and Control

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases and Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for R/3 use the security and auditability features of the AIX operating system and host hardware.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for Oracle Databases and Tivoli Data Protection for ESS for R/3 are each server products with one charge unit: point authorization.

Basic License

To order a basic license, specify the program number, feature number 9001 for asset registration, and the feature number of the desired distribution medium. Also, specify the one-time charge (OTC) feature number from the tables below in the quantity desired (maximum quantity of 250).

The quantity of Tivoli Management Points is based on the number of servers managed.

Note: Prerequisite software products, including Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 with the Managed System for LAN feature, Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, or Tivoli Data Protection for R/3, must be purchased separately, and are not included or packaged with the purchase of 5698-ESO or 5698-ESR.

Use of a second copy of 5698-ESO or 5698-ESR and prerequisite Tivoli Data Protection and Tivoli Storage Manager programs is authorized for installation on the associated backup server at no added point charge, only so long as this server remains functionally paired with the primary server on which the licensed copy of 5698-ESO or 5698-ESR is installed.

Tivoli Systems Support

Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a no-charge (NC) order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support — NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.

Prior to the end of the first 12 months' support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

Support Upgrade

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable one-time charge (OTC) feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the NC support period.

In subsequent years, if a customer wants to upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option, an MES order must be entered to discontinue the existing support option feature number and to add the feature number for the desired options. After an MES order is entered, the support will be renewed and billed annually at that support level unless support is cancelled by the customer.
