Overview

Users of Tivoli® NetView® Distribution Manager for MVS™ and Tivoli Software Distribution 3.1.5 for AIX®, Windows™, NetWare, and OS/2® can now take advantage of newly available functions that improve usability, add platform support, and increase storage capacity.

Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS

Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS provides centralized system management for large customers using S/390® as their primary management system. This tool allows these users to automate the distribution of software and data to a large number of remote targets, with centralized tracking, automated error recovery, and efficient network utilization during distribution. Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager also provides a distribution process history.

Release 7 of this application offers users these enhancements:

  • Improved usability. New features eliminate the need to manually intervene to delete requests at the distribution server if the request is made at the Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager level.
  • Additional platform support. Release 7 includes the ability to use OS/390® Sysplex capabilities with Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager.
  • Additional storage capability. This release offers a hundred-fold increase of Resource Repository data storage for use by the application.

Tivoli Software Distribution Version 3.1.5 for Windows, AIX, NetWare, and OS/2

Tivoli Software Distribution offers Windows, AIX, NetWare, and OS/2 users a solution for rapidly and efficiently deploying complex mission-critical or desktop-productivity applications to multiple locations from a central point. Version 3.1.5 of this powerful tool includes a number of enhancements, including:

  • Improved usability. Similar to Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS, new features of Tivoli Software Distribution eliminate the need to manually intervene to delete requests at the distribution server.
  • Enhanced reporting capabilities. This release adds an additional command line parameter that removes potential problems when client names are not associated with a host name.
  • Additional platform support for Windows, AIX, and OS/2.

Key Prerequisites

Any S/390 processor capable of supporting the Software Requirements described in the Software Requirements section of this announcement.

Description

Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS Release 7 provides the following new enhancements:

Usability Enhancement

When a Transmission Plan is deleted by NetView Distribution Manager for MVS Release 7, the Tivoli Software Distribution 3.1.5 platforms will also delete the corresponding request if it is still in a scheduled state. This new capability will eliminate manual intervention to delete requests at the distribution server when the Transmission Plan has been deleted at NetView Distribution Manager for MVS.

OS/390 Sysplex Support

This support provides the ability to utilize OS/390 Sysplex capabilities with Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS Release 7.

Additional Storage Capacity

The additional storage capacity provides a one-hundred fold increase of Resource Repository data storage for use by Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS.

Tivoli Software Distribution 3.1.5 for Windows, AIX, NetWare, and OS/2 have been enhanced with the following new capabilities:

Improved Status Inquiry Reporting

An additional parameter has been added to the STATTG command to insure that the Agent has the detail necessary to report accurate status of the client. The server must be running in order to support this new parameter. This capability removes potential problems when client names are not associated with a host name.

  • Warp Server for e-business support as both a server and client
  • Journaled File System (JFS) support
  • Pristine Scenario for Warp Server for e-business
  • DiskCamera Support on Warp Server for e-business

Software Distribution 3.1.5 for Windows

  • Windows 2000 (Professional and Server) both a server and client
  • Pristine scenario for Windows 2000 (Professional and Server)
  • DiskCamera Support on Windows 2000 (Professional and Server)

Software Distribution 3.1.5 for AIX

  • Pristine scenario for AIX 4.3.3

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Hardware Requirements

Any S/390® platform capable of running the Software Requirements described in this announcement.

Software Requirements

Tivoli® NetView® Distribution Manager for MVS™ must be installed using SMP/E Release 1.8.1 with the related tolerant PTF.

In order to use the new functions available in Release 7, Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS requires OS/390® 2.5, or later, or MVS/ESA™ 5.2, or later.

DFSMS/MVS® 1.3 is required for Sysplex Support and DFSMS™/MVS 1.5 for Extended Resource Repository functions.

If the new functions are not used, then Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS requires any of the operating systems supporting the SMP/E Release 1.8.1 with related tolerant PTF.

These are:

  • 5668-949 SMP/E Release 8.1 with PTF UR51070

And either of the following:

  • 5655-068 MVS/ESA SP™ Version 5 with JES2
  • 5655-069 MVS/ESA SP Version 5 with JES3

OS/390 Version 1 (5645-001) Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS requires one of the following SMP/E releases:

  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 1 Release 1 with PTF UR51070
  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 1 Release 2 with PTF UR51071
  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 1 Release 3 with PTF UR51067

OS/390 Version 2 (5647-A01) Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS requires one of the following SMP/E versions:

  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 2 Release 4 with PTF UR51067
  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 2 Release 5 or 6 with PTF UR51068
  • OS/390 SMP/E Version 2 Release 7, or later

Software requirements for GIX, IOF, and SPMF are unchanged.

DB2® version 2.3 is no longer supported. The minimum current level of DB 2.4, or later is required.

Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS document "Nodes Interface Description" is unchanged.

The announced programs use the security and auditability features of the operating system software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Current Licensees

Current licensees of Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS (5685-016) will receive this update from IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) automatically. This shipment of Release 7 is scheduled to be completed by November 10, 2000.

Current licensees of Tivoli Software Distribution (5698-SWD, 5697-SWD) will be sent a program reorder form that can be returned directly to SDF.

Reorder forms are scheduled to be mailed by November 10, 2000. Reorder forms returned to SDF will be processed within 10 workdays of receipt.

New Licensees

Orders for new licenses can be placed now.

Shipment will not occur before availability date.

Unless a later date is specified, orders entered before the planned availability date will be assigned a schedule date of one week following availability.

New users of Tivoli NetView Distribution Manager for MVS should specify:
