Overview

Tivoli® SANergy™ is patented software that runs on computers connected to a storage area network (SAN) that can:

  • Greatly simplify SAN-storage administration through the power of sharing
  • Extend industry-standard networking to utilize the gigabit bandwidth of the SAN
  • Broaden increased data-availability protection to include many applications
  • Reduce the total amount of storage required in a SAN

Tivoli SANergy eliminates the one-to-one relationship between the number of SAN-connected computers and the number of disk volumes needed by those computers. Tivoli SANergy transparently enables multiple computers to share single disk volumes on the SAN storage. In fact, it allows many combinations of computers running Windows NT™, Windows™ 2000, MacOS, IRIX, Solaris, AIX®, Tru64, Red Hat Linux, and DG/UX to all share the exact same disk volumes at the same time. And, if the applications running on those computers are capable, Tivoli SANergy even enables the sharing of the exact same files at the same time — across platforms!

Tivoli SANergy Version 2.2 adds:

  • Support for Red Hat Linux, as both a SANergy host and as a MDC
  • Support for DG/UX as a SANergy host
  • Capability for all SANergy host operating systems to work with all SANergy MDC operating systems
  • Improved SANergy functionality for MacOS 8 and 9
  • Performance enhancements for homogenous Linux and Solaris environments that specifically improve value of SANergy in Web-hosted environments

ZOOM

ZOOM is a new feature that greatly improves SAN performance for small file environments such as Web hosting. Read performance on SANergy hosts is improved by reducing the number of meta data requests between the SANergy host and the MDC. In Tivoli SANergy Version 2.2, ZOOM is enabled for Linux SANergy hosts while using Linux SANergy MDCs, and for Solaris SANergy hosts while using Solaris SANergy MDCs.

Enterprise Management-ready with SNMP Control

In addition to the native and HTML-based interfaces for all operating system versions, Tivoli SANergy on Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, and Solaris can be managed from SNMP management consoles. Tivoli SANergy High Availability for Windows NT and Windows 2000 can also be managed from SNMP management consoles. A custom SANergy management information base (MIB) is included to support the use of such consoles as Tivoli NetView® and MG-SOFT MIB Browser Professional Edition.

Linux Support

Linux support offers a completely new and powerful way for Linux environments to leverage SANs, scalability, performance, and throughput — with SANergy. A whole new realm of leveraging open-source products for enterprise business applications is opened.

Tivoli SANergy APIs

With the release of SANergy 2.2, Tivoli is making available APIs that will enable third-party file system and/or NAS/OS partners to integrate with SANergy. Through the new Tivoli Ready for SANergy program, developers will be able to add their file system to those supported by SANergy MDCs, or create their own custom MDC. Either approach will allow access to these new systems from any of the SANergy 2.2 host systems. For information on the Tivoli Ready for SANergy program, refer to:

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

Euro Currency

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

Tivoli SANergy incorporates patented technology to enable true file-level sharing via direct access to SAN-based storage devices. Acting as a "SAN Redirector", this software transparently extends Windows NT, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems to enable and manage concurrent access to common file systems on shared storage at true SAN network and device speeds.

Major features of Tivoli SANergy include:

  • File Sharing of a LAN
  • Speed of a SAN
  • Compatibility through standards

Available since November 1998, the key values and benefits of SANergy are driven by the ability to share data at extremely high data rates. With Tivoli SANergy, you can:

  • Share storage, share file systems, share files — at the speed of a SAN
  • Perform online data backups faster, with less operational impact on systems and networks
  • Reduce overall costs by eliminating servers and/or redundant storage devices
  • Realize near-linear scalability by adding new systems to common storage as CPU demands increase
  • Enable data sharing, accelerate data-intensive workflows, and improve productivity for I/O performance-critical applications

Technical Information

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware and Software Requirements

Summarized below are the general requirements to support Tivoli SANergy in a SAN-based environment. Platform-specific requirements follow.

  • MDC

In any configuration, on a per file system basis, one computer needs to be assigned as the security and meta data controller/manager, MDC, for SANergy-shared volumes. There can be as many MDCs as there are file systems, or a single MDC for all file systems (or anything in between). Currently, only Windows NT™ 4.0, Windows™ 2000, LINUX®, and Solaris can be MDCs. The MDC system also acts as the "server" for the specific shared volumes. However, the MDC's role as a server is only to manage user authentication, access control and file system locking operations — SANergy redirects I/O over the SAN. Windows NT-shared volumes must be formatted under Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 using NTFS. Solaris shared volumes (Solaris MDC) must be formatted using UFS, and shared volumes for Linux must be formatted using EXT2FS.

  • LAN Environment

All computers must share a common LAN and protocol (for example, TCP/IP over Ethernet or Fibre Channel), and be able to "see" each other on the LAN. This includes an operational LAN network interface (for example, embedded Ethernet or separate Ethernet adapter). All SANergy host computers must be able to "map" (mount) the MDC shared volumes. This requires the standard network operating system software to be installed and configured, such that each machine can access a shared volume on the MDC "server".

Windows NT x Use built-in Buy SAMBA
     or Windows NT or CIFS

                                      Server SW NFS

  • SAN Environment

All systems must share a common "SAN" connection to shared storage devices. Typically, this will be a connection over shared SSA, or Fibre Channel (switched or arbitrated loop) physical media. A SAN host bus adapter (HBA) is also required in each system with appropriate SAN drivers installed. The interconnect technology and associated HBA may be shared SCSI, SSA, or Fibre Channel. All HBAs must support a multi-initiator environment:

    • SAN network devices (for example, FC-AL hubs, fabric/switches)
    • SAN storage devices (for example, RAID or JBOD arrays)

For Fibre Channel SANs, all systems and drives to be shared must also be in a common "zone". Zones and fabrics may require additional configuration for proper operation.

Following are the specific system requirements. All systems require a CD-ROM for software installation.
