Overview

IBM announces Enterprise Information Portal V7.1, the latest release, which significantly expands function to enable richer portal applications to be constructed.

IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 provides an enhanced foundation for access to both structured and unstructured data, including information from IBM and non-IBM sources. Version 7.1 builds on the previous version's functionality with enhanced data access, expanded search capabilities, information mining, and integration of workflow processes across all datastores. Specifically, IBM has added the following new capabilities:

  • Access to relational databases, including IBM DB2®, Oracle, and others that support ODBC or JDBC connections. This adds structured data support to the current connections for unstructured information such as PC documents, audio, video, images, and computer output.
  • Intranet and Internet Web crawling, and information mining, enabling new applications that support categorization and summarization of document information.
  • Access to the IBM DB2 Warehouse Manager through InfoCatalog, enabling applications to incorporate the knowledge of relevant business analysis reports.
  • Integration of workflow functionality to enable action to be taken upon documents, reports, and data that are retrieved via EIP.

The underlying architectural design of Enterprise Information Portal provides the foundation and development toolkit for IBM, customers, and partners to develop connectors to additional data sources such as business applications, file systems, and more.

The unique value of IBM Enterprise Information Portal is the open, modular connector foundation, which enables searching across both structured and unstructured information sources, simultaneously in real time. No metadata repository needs to be implemented.

Enterprise Information Portal will enable business users to make faster, more effective business decisions, enhance customer service, and reduce operational expenses.

IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 pricing has been modified to require licensing of each processor on each server where components are installed. Previous versions of IBM EIP required licensing only at the server level. For further details refer to the Ordering Information and Licensing sections.

Key Prerequisites

IBM Enterprise Information Portal executes in Windows NT™, Windows™ 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, and AIX® environments. In all configurations, at least one Windows NT system is required for the Federated Database.

Description

IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 builds on the capabilities of previous versions and delivers on the vision to provide enhanced access to structured and unstructured data across the enterprise. This latest enhancement provides integration of business intelligence capabilities, workflow across all datastores, and information mining to enable expanded leveraging of information.

Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 delivers the following new capabilities:

  • The ability to search across an expanded variety of datastores, including connectors to DB2, relational databases such as Oracle, and DB2 Warehouse Manager. EIP also provides access to nonrelational datastores, including VSAM and IMS™, via IBM DataJoiner®.

In addition to these datastores, this release of the Enterprise Information Portal continues to support connections to the following products:

    • Content Manager on Windows NT, Windows 2000, and AIX
    • Content Manager OnDemand on Windows NT, AIX, HP-UX, and Sun Solaris
    • Content Manager for AS/400®
    • VisualInfo™ on Windows NT and AIX
    • Content Manager ImagePlus® for OS/390®
    • Content Manager OnDemand for OS/390
    • Content Manager OnDemand for AS/400
    • DB2 Digital Library on Windows NT and AIX
    • Lotus® Domino.Doc
  • Integration of information mining, further expanding capabilities to access needed information.
  • A new connector to IBM Business Intelligence InfoCatalog, unifying the worlds of structured and unstructured information. This will enable users to put their information to work, and make smarter, better-informed business decisions.
  • Extended search capabilities, to enable searching across Lotus Notes® Domino™ databases and popular Web search engines.

Core capabilities in Enterprise Information Portal include:

  • e-business enablement

A Java™-based client application is provided for searching of and access to the various datastores. A thin (browser-based) client, based on Java Server Pages, is also provided. The applications provided may also be easily modified to provide a custom layout as required.

  • Robust portal application development toolkit
    • Core business processes and legacy or e-business applications are optimized when supporting information is easily accessible and tightly integrated. The rich toolkit enables rapid application development using the tools of choice: Visual and non-Visual Java beans, ActiveX interfaces, or C++ programming interfaces.
    • Application developers can call a single application programming interface set, Enterprise Information Portal's unified API set, to invoke a search across multiple repositories simultaneously, significantly reducing development and maintenance efforts.
    • The published, modular connector architecture of Enterprise Information Portal provides the interfaces for customers and partners to build additional connectors to legacy applications and other data sources.

Disparate search criteria and client applications often force users to perform multiple searches to pull all of this information together. Enterprise Information Portal combines these searches into one single search, presenting a single, aggregated result to the user.

IBM Enterprise Information Portal provides a better way to service your customers, through clients or standard Web browsers, and provides tools for rapid portal application enablement.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

The service end date for this Year 2000 ready product is August 15, 2002.

Euro Currency

This program is EuroReady.

For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at:

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products that include third-party software (preloaded or not) and/or third-party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third-party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:

  • Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules
  • Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by:

  • Detailing euro-related requirements
  • Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
  • Declaring when the implementation will be generally available

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the solution specification as described in the contracts document.

Ordering Information

IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 is a modular product. In customer configurations, individual components of IBM EIP V7.1 can be distributed and installed on separate individual machines. When ordering Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) to license the use of IBM EIP V7.1, there are three key factors that must be considered:

  • Different components of IBM EIP V7.1 software can be installed on separate machines. IBM EIP licensing requires PoEs for the total number of processors on all servers where core components are installed and run.
  • There are four core components of IBM EIP that require licensing, but other IBM EIP V7.1 components may be installed without additional licenses. The four IBM EIP V7.1 components that require licensing are:
    • Administration Component
    • Lotus® Domino Extended Search Component
    • Text Mining Component
    • Workflow Component

The IBM EIP V7.1 Administration Component is defined as the IBM EIP base function required for running EIP applications. Customers must minimally acquire PoEs for the number of processors where the IBM EIP Administration Component, as defined below, is installed.

Examples of components that may, in certain circumstances, be installed without additional PoEs include IBM EIP V7.1 Connector Components and the IBM EIP V7.1 Toolkit. The IBM EIP V7.1 Connector Components may be installed on any server or client within the configuration without additional PoEs, as long as the Administration Component is licensed and installed on at least one machine. The IBM EIP Toolkit may also be installed for use by application developers without additional PoEs, as long as the Administration Component is licensed and installed on at least one machine.

For example, a customer may install the IBM EIP V7.1 Administration and Text Mining Components on one server, individual Connectors on separate servers and the IBM EIP V7.1 Toolkit on another server for application development. In this case, the customer must only acquire PoEs for the number of processors on the server where the Administration and Text Mining Components are installed.

The IBM Enterprise Information Portal V7.1 Administration Component is defined as the IBM EIP base function required for running EIP applications. In most cases, this will be the Administration Database required for federated search functions. Therefore, in most cases, licensing the Administration Component simply means that PoEs must be obtained for the number of processors on the server where the Administration Database is installed.

But in some configurations, for example, those that do not require federated search capabilities, the Administration Database may not be required and need not be installed. In these cases, the Administration Component must still be licensed, but it is defined as the minimal set of EIP software that must be installed to run your application. For example, the minimal required code might be a single instance of a Connector or an RMI server without an Administration Database. In these configurations, licensing of the Administration Component means obtaining PoEs for each processor on the server or client where that minimal set of software is installed.

For example, a simple application using IBM EIP V7.1 to access a single instance of IBM Content Manager OnDemand might only require the installation of the IBM EIP V7.1 Content Manager OnDemand Connector to run (no Administration Database). In this case, the minimal set of software required would be a single instance of the connector. Therefore, in this case, licensing of the Administration Component means obtaining PoEs for the number of processors on one of the servers or clients where the IBM EIP V7.1 Content Manager OnDemand Connector is installed.

In all cases, the minimum number of PoEs that must be obtained is the number of processors on the server where the Administration Component, as defined above, is installed.
