Overview

LoadLeveler® for AIX® is a versatile workload management system for serial and parallel batch jobs running on the RS/6000® SP™ System and RS/6000 servers and workstations. LoadLeveler lets you schedule jobs as they arise so you're not tied down to a preset schedule. Because it distributes processing to available resources, your system can actually run more jobs in less time.

V2.2 of LoadLeveler for AIX features a number of enhancements that increase flexibility while optimizing performance.

More Scheduling Options

A new, consumable resources facility allows users to schedule jobs based on the availability of specific resources.

Improved Security

By exploiting the PSSP Security Services within the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), administrators can authenticate user identity so only DCE-authenticated users can schedule jobs and forward credentials so jobs will run with the user's DCE authority.

Improved Process Tracking

By tracking processes spawned off by a job and canceling any processes left behind when a job is terminated, LoadLeveler now ensures that resources assigned to cancelled jobs become available for future use.

More Task Assignment Options

When assigning tasks, you can now run an individual job on a specific node, assign tasks in blocks, let LoadLeveler determine the assignment, or use a combination of methods.

More Tasks

With the use of Parallel Environment and the new SP Switch2, LoadLeveler can manage jobs with up to 4096 user-space tasks, where previously it could manage up to 1024.

Improved Ease of Use

The LoadLeveler Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been enhanced to provide a sequence of panels the user can step through to accomplish certain configuration-related tasks.

Withdrawal of LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.1

LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.1 will no longer be marketed as of November 3, 2000.

Key Prerequisites

LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2 can be used with the RS/6000 SP and other RS/6000 servers and workstations using the IBM AIX 4.3.3 operating system. To run Parallel Operating Environment (POE) jobs, the Parallel Environment for AIX product is required.

Planned Availability Date

July 28, 2000

Description

LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2 provides the following improvements:

  • Task to Node assignment is more flexible. A user can specify specific nodes for a job to run based upon keywords provided. Tasks can be:
    • Assigned in blocks
    • Assigned specifically by the user
    • Left for LoadLeveler to determine assignment
    • Or a combination of the above
  • A process tracking function is provided which allows LoadLeveler to cancel any processes throughout the entire cluster which may have been left behind after a job is terminated. This prevents these processes from consuming resources or degrading performance in the cluster.
  • Task Guide support has been added. A Task Guide is a sequence of panels a user steps through to accomplish a task. The Task Guide format in LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2 provides the same look and feel as that in PSSP. The LoadLeveler Task Guide allows modification of LoadLeveler configuration values related to scheduling such as:
    • Setting up consumable resources
    • Tuning scheduling and communications keywords
    • Merging SP machine and adapter information
  • The use of consumable resources allows users to schedule jobs based on the availability of specific resources. A scheduling option is available to request resources such as CPU for running jobs. Installation-defined resources can be specified and considered in scheduling as well. Keywords have been added that can specify:
    • Which resource to be considered by the LoadLeveler scheduler when dispatching jobs
    • What resources are available collectively on all machines
  • Loadleveler for AIX, V2.2 offers improved security by exploiting the Security Services offered in PSSP V3.2. With this Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), administrators can authenticate user identity so only DCE-authenticated users can schedule jobs. In addition, you can forward credentials so jobs will run with the user's DCE authority.
  • Users running parallel applications now have the ability to specify more job parameters (such as resources required and node preference) for their interactive POE jobs. This capability is particularly beneficial to large cluster installations.
  • With the use of the new SP Switch2 and Parallel Environment, LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2 can handle jobs with up to 4096 user-space tasks, where previously it could handle jobs up to 1024 tasks. Refer to Hardware Announcement 100-209 , dated July 18, 2000, for information on the SP Switch2.
  • A new daemon, gsmonitor, has been added to monitor machine availability and notify the negotiator when a machine is no longer reachable. This daemon provides quicker and more reliable response with its use of the PSSP Group Services API (GSAPI).
  • New Application Programming Interface (API) calls provide the functions which were previously available through the command line only.

Product Positioning

LoadLeveler is an integral piece of the total system management solution for the RS/6000 SP Systems and other RS/6000 servers and workstations and can take advantage of features provided in Parallel System Support Programs, such as DCE SP security.

LoadLeveler is ideal for users who need to submit jobs as necessary, not according to any pre-set schedule. Other job schedulers that provide a rule-based, batch workload management for inter-job dependencies and scheduling jobs at predetermined schedules, can be integrated with LoadLeveler function.

LoadLeveler supports load balancing for interactive Parallel Operating Environment sessions, and focuses on parallel job scheduling and scalability.

Technical Information

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements

LoadLeveler runs on RS/6000 SP Systems and other RS/6000 servers and workstations.

LoadLeveler requires:

  • 30 MB of disk space, which must be available on at least one node for LoadLeveler product code
  • A minimum of 15 to 20 MB, on each node on an RS/6000 SP or in a RS/6000 server or workstation cluster for local log and work files

Software Requirements

  • LoadLeveler requires the AIX Version 4.3.3 operating system (5765-C34)
    • To run parallel operating environment (POE) jobs: Parallel Environment for AIX, Version 2.4 (5765-543), or Version 3.1 (5765-D93) is required
    • If using the GUI: AIXwindows® Environment, Version 4.3.3 (5765-C34) is required
    • Parallel Systems Support Programs for AIX, Version 3.1 or later compatible release (5765-D51) is required only:
      • If you plan to run POE jobs in user-space mode with LoadLeveler on an SP, the Job Switch Resource Table Services fileset (ssp.st 3.1 or later compatible releases) of the PSSP install image is required
      • If you plan to configure LoadLeveler to support DCE security services, SP Authenticated Clients Commands fileset (ssp.clients 3.2) of the PSSP installp image is required

Compatibility: In order for LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.1 to coexist with LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2, APAR number IY06027 is required on V2.1.

LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.1 will not execute with Parallel Environment V3.1.

LoadLeveler for AIX, V2.2 can run with Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) V3.1 and Parallel Environment V2.4.

Limitations: Limitations with AIX 4.3.3: As a performance enhancement, AIX 4.3.3 modified the scheduler to have multiple run queues and load balancing. However, use of these features can cause problems when used on SP nodes.

Limitations with Parallel Environment 3.1: The use of the parallel user initiated checkpoint/restart support is limited to use with the UDP/IP message passing library. Checkpoint/restart can no longer be used with programs using the RS/6000 SP User Space message passing library.

Performance Considerations: If running with DCE security services, the overhead may cause decreased throughput.

Planning Information

Installability: APAR number IY06027 is required for migrating from LoadLeveler V2.1 to LoadLeveler V2.2 if you plan to do a node-by-node migration of your LoadLeveler cluster.

If LoadLeveler and Parallel Environment (PE) are used with PSSP V3.2, migration to PSSP V3.2, LoadLeveler V2.2, and PE V3.1 must be completed simultaneously.
