Overview

DFS is a distributed file system running on DCE that yields a single, shared file space for all authorized users from all possible locations.

You can access files from multiple heterogeneous platform servers.

DFS features include:

  • Replication enables high availability — multiple copies of files and applications can be accessed and used across multiple server machines
  • Location-independent file names allow for scalability — files can be relocated and additional machines and disk resources brought online easily
  • Client-side caching stores the most commonly used files close to the desktop to expedite information access
  • Remote online administration simplifies configuration changes and user updates
  • Heterogeneous platform coverage helps leverage existing IT investments

DFS is the best file-sharing solution for large organizations using DCE that have multiple servers on multiple platforms. With replication and location-independent file names, DFS can be easily scaled to meet the demands of large, geographically distributed organizations. Replication benefits:

  • Keeps information highly available and close to the users
  • Increases data availability
  • Reduces network traffic

Location independence of files enables system administrators to easily add and remove users or move files without disrupting service.

What's new in DFS 3.1

DFS 3.1 provides the following additional features:

  • Conversion of Read-Only replicas to Read-Write in disaster situations
  • Common configuration files between AIX® and Solaris
  • Backward compatible with previous versions of DFS
  • Ability to export GPFS via DFS servers
  • Enhanced DMAPI support for ADSM
  • XBSA compliant backup system
  • Fileserver media-error tolerance
  • Multi-threaded Fileset Location Server

Product Positioning

Enterprise File Systems provide five key benefits critical to distributed application file-sharing in the global information age:

Performance — Your most frequently requested files are efficiently cached from remote servers to the local desktop for faster data retrieval, reduced server loads, and greater network bandwidth. Memory and disk-based caching provides high performance and fast data recovery if you need to reboot. Data consistency and integrity is provided via a server-based mechanism that monitors and informs client machines when their cached data is no longer current.

Scalability — File names are location-independent, because they do not incorporate machine name or location information. This creates a unique plug-and-play environment. Administrators can move files easily and add or reconfigure resources to meet changing user and system demands, while ensuring uninterrupted access to the data.

Security — Multiple security mechanisms control the access and usage of data. Kerberos provides mutual client and server authentication that only allows authorized users into the environment. Access control lists (ACLs) assign specific data access privileges to users or groups of users. Using ACLs, system administrators can control access to information at the directory and even file level, ensuring the integrity and security of critical data. Encryption options are available for files as they travel across the network for greater data and system integrity within and between organizations.

Availability — Groups of files are automatically (or by request) replicated across multiple servers within the enterprise creating a "mirrored" environment. You gain high-availability access to data. This approach eliminates any single point of failure and provides uninterrupted access to data during routine maintenance, system backups, and temporary system failures.

Cost-Effective Administration — Related files, clients, and server machines are grouped into domains (or cells) to simplify administration and configuration operations. Cells can be transparently linked into much larger administrative domains. Administrators can design extremely large-scale but manageable distributed systems. Systems administrators can change configurations from anywhere in the network, making remote administration extremely cost-effective. Remote administration facilities and GUI enables a small number of administrators to manage a large number of users.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The security functions of this IBM product interface with the security provided by the operating system.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

Customers can license DFS in one of two options:

  • Network Server and Registered User
  • Web-Enabled Environment Installs

Network Server and Registered User: This licensing option is for users who want to deploy DFS for use in their internal network where the number of users can be counted. DFS charges for the number of server installations and the number of registered users authorized to access DFS files. Prices indicated are list price. DFS participates in the IBM Passport Advantage program to provide discount, support, and upgrade protection.

Program packages include the license to install one server and one client. In order to obtain license to install more than one server and/or client, customers need to order additional PoEs along with the program package. For example, if a new customer requires licenses and code to install 5 servers and 1,000 registered users, they would purchase:

  1. One program package (which includes one server PoE and one Registered User PoE)
  2. Four Server Install PoEs
  3. 999 Registered User PoEs

The program package will deliver one set of CDs (containing code and online documentation) and Quick Beginnings hardcopy manuals. In this example the customer has the right to install server software (any platforms) on up to five machines, and as many copies of client software (any platforms) as are necessary to support 1,000 users.

Customers may install DCE server components (Cell Directory Service, Distributed Time Service, and DCE Security Service) on as many machines as they have DFS server PoEs. These need not be the same machines on which they are running the DFS services. So, in this example, the customer would also have the right to install the DCE server components on as many as five machines other than those running the DFS services. And they may copy and install the DCE base services onto as many machines as necessary to support the number of registered users for which they have PoEs.

Existing customers who want to expand their environment, but already have the necessary software, need only order PoEs for the new servers or registered users in their environment.

Existing customers can order a media package to obtain software for platforms that they might not currently have. Note that if customers plan to expand their current installation size (that is, add to their current number of servers or users), they must also purchase PoEs for the additional servers or users. For example, a current customer may have 100 registered users that use AIX machines. That customer might want to allow the same users to use Solaris machines as well. This customer is not adding registered users or servers. Therefore, they need only purchase a media package to obtain the Solaris client software. For contrast, if that same customer wanted to add access via Solaris machines and add another 100 registered users, they would also need to purchase another 100 Registered User PoEs.

Upgrades are permitted from the following previous program releases for customers who purchased Network Server and Registered Entity licenses:

  • 5630-A41 Transarc DFS 1.1 for Solaris 2.5.1
  • 5630-A42 Transarc DFS 2.0 for Solaris 2.6
  • 5630-A43 DFS 2.2 for AIX
  • 5630-A47 Transarc DFS

Web-Enabled Environment Installs: This licensing option is for users who want to deploy DFS for use in a Web-serving environment:

  • Where Web servers are running DFS client software to serve the general public.
  • Where the number of users (people accessing DFS file space) is some large unknown quantity. In this option DFS charges for the number of machines on which any DFS code is installed.

As an example, a customer may have a Web hosting environment with 15 machines functioning as Web servers and five machines functioning as file servers. The file servers are feeding content to the Web servers that, in turn, make the content available to the general public. In this environment, the customer must purchase Web Enabled Environments Installs for each machine (Web server or file server) in the environment.

  • One program package (which includes one PoE)
  • 19 Web Enabled Environment with one Server Install

The customer would also have the right to use as many DCE server components (Cell Directory Service, Distributed Time Service, and DCE Security Service) as they have Web Enabled Environment servers installed. The customer may install DCE base services as necessary to support their environment.

Upgrades are permitted from the following previous program releases for customers who purchased Web Enabled or Unlimited Entity licenses:

  • 5630-A41 Transarc DFS 1.1 for Solaris 2.5.1
  • 5630-A42 Transarc DFS 2.0 for Solaris 2.6
  • 5630-A43 DFS 2.2 for AIX
  • 5630-A47 Transarc DFS
