Overview
Bottom rule

TS7650G Model DD6 running IBM® ProtecTIER® Enterprise Edition V3.4 has been enhanced to support single- and dual-node FSI configurations. When two FSI nodes are installed in the same Model DD6, both nodes must utilize the same host interface, either 1 GbE or 10 GbE. Installing two FSI nodes in a single Model DD6 significantly reduces the rack space requirements when compared to the rack space requirements of two separate Model DD5 gateways.

Model DD6 has also been enhanced to support a field upgrade to convert a single node VTL system to a clustered VTL system.

See the previous announcements for Model DD6 and ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.4 in the Reference information section for additional details on VTL systems.

Description
Bottom rule

TS7650G Model DD6 running IBM ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.4 has been enhanced to support single- and dual-node FSI configurations. When two FSI nodes are installed in the same Model DD6, both nodes must utilize the same host interface of 1 GbE or 10 GbE. Installing two FSI nodes in a single Model DD6 significantly reduces the rack space requirements when compared to the rack space requirements of two separate model DD5 gateways.

Model DD6 has also been enhanced to support a field upgrade to convert a single node VTL system to a clustered VTL system.

See the previous announcements for Model DD6 and ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.4 listed below for additional details on VTL systems.

IBM TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway, comprised of the IBM TS7650G Server with IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition software, is designed to address the data protection needs of enterprise data centers. This solution is designed to offer high performance, high capacity, robust scalability, and a choice of disk-based targets for backup and archive data.

TS7650G Model DD6 includes a single processor module with four 8 Gb FC ports to connect to the ProtecTIER repository, two power supplies, and the internal disks for event logging and storing the ProtecTIER software. Two Ethernet ports are available for replication, and these RJ45 ports may be configured for 1 Gb or 10 Gb networks. When configuring these ports as 10 Gb Ethernet ports, a 10 GBase-T compliant infrastructure is required. One additional Ethernet port is available on each processor node to connect to the ProtecTIER Manager. Features are available to configure the host side connections for VTL and FSI, as well as other options. See the Hardware requirements section for feature configuration requirements.

The TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway offers:

  • In-line data deduplication powered by HyperFactor® technology
  • Powerful multicore virtualization and deduplication
  • Clustering support for higher performance and availability
  • FC ports for host and server connectivity
  • Flexible storage choices and options

Analysis of modern storage environments has shown that more and more infrastructures are moving to open APIs. The market demand for vendor-specific APIs is rapidly diminishing. ProtecTIER V3.3 supports interfaces for VTLs, FSI, and Symantec OpenStorage (OST) API. ProtecTIER V3.4 will only focus on the open APIs supporting VTL and FSI. OST will continue to be supported in V3.3.

TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway is a data protection platform designed to protect business information while reducing the amount of space required to store data. Deploying the TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway can help organizations more efficiently protect corporate data on disk-based storage while helping to manage the exponential growth of new data through reduction and elimination of duplicate data in their backups.

Refer to IBM ProtecTIER V3.4 Software Announcement 216-078, dated February 23, 2016, and the IBM TS7650G Deduplication Gateway model DD6 Hardware Announcement 116-006, dated February 23, 2016, for additional details on VTL systems and other Model DD6 details.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

Enterprise and midrange data centers require high-capacity, reliable, and scalable data protection solutions with excellent price and performance. Delivering high-level data protection is increasingly difficult for many reasons:

  • Data growth outgrowing existing capacity
  • Unable to meet backup and recovery SLAs
  • Business decisions being made using out-of-date information
  • No time available to test the disaster recovery plan
  • No time to perform routine scheduled maintenance activities
  • Customer satisfaction ratings dropping
  • Losing competitive advantage
  • Inability to comply with government or business regulations

ProtecTIER is designed to provide the following core differentiators:

  • High speed backups: Up to 2500 MBps or more sustained inline deduplication backup performance with clustered VTL TS7650G systems running ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.4 as a VTL system, dependent on the capabilities of the repository's disk array and other data and workload characteristics
  • Even faster restores: Up to 3200 MBps or more sustained recovery performance with clustered VTL TS7650G systems running ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.4, dependent on capabilities of the repository's disk array and other data and workload characteristics
  • Cost efficiency: Store up to 25 TB or more backup data on only 1 TB of physical disk
  • Data integrity: Patented HyperFactor® deduplication technology designed to provide enterprise class data integrity by avoiding the possibility of data loss due to a hash collision
  • Scalability: Architected to meet enterprise capacity needs supporting a single physical repository size up to 1 PB
  • High availability: Clustered configuration provides hardware redundancy for higher availability
  • Disaster recovery: Integrated IP-based replication for data centers, remote offices, and offsite storage locations
  • Proven technology: Implemented in many Fortune 500 data centers since 2005
  • Support for back up environments: VTL, CFIS, or NFS

IBM delivers multiple solutions to meet the dynamic needs of a complex IT market. While Spectrum Protect and ProtecTIER both offer deduplication technology to reduce storage requirements and provide economic value, ProtecTIER is designed for enterprise clients requiring redundancy for high availability, high throughput, and superior deduplication efficiency.

ProtecTIER Manager can support more than one ProtecTIER server. If the ProtecTIER Manager workstation is connected to more than one ProtecTIER server, they can be connected to a workstation through a switch box or a terminal server. The workstation and switch box must be provided by the customer.

Software requirements

Ordering the ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition PID (5639-PTA) is required when the gateway hardware is ordered.

Operating system prerequisites: The appropriate Linux™ operating system is included with the IBM ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition software.

Compatibility

Virtual emulation

An IBM TS7650G ProtecTIER Gateway VTL system emulates, in both stand-alone and clustered configurations, the IBM TS3500 tape library with IBM Ultrium™ 2 Tape Drives or Ultrium 3 Tape Drives, and the Quantum P3000 tape library with DLT Tape Drives.

Limitations

When two FSI nodes are installed in the same Model DD6, each node must have the same host adapter, either 1 Gb Ethernet or 10 Gb Ethernet. Intermixing nodes with different host side Adapters is not supported in a single DD6.

To enable 10 Gb Ethernet replication on Model DD6, 10 GBase-T compliant infrastructure is required.

When configured as an FSI system, TS7650G with ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition stores data in Red Hat Global File Systems (GFS). The number and size of the file systems depends on the size and parameters of your configured repository.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities

To enable 10 Gb Ethernet replication on Model DD6, a 10 GBase-T compliant infrastructure is required including Cat 6 cables with appropriate connectors.

Physical planning is a customer responsibility. Detailed planning information is in the IBM TS7650G Deduplication Gateway for ProtecTIER 3.4 Introduction and Planning Guide, GA32-0918 .

Rack installations

The TS7650G Server is a 2U rack-drawer model designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet for 26-inch deep devices, such as the NetBAY42 ER, NetBAY42 SR, NetBAY25 SR, or NetBAY11.

If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 71.1 cm (28.0 in). Also, adequate space must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow, approximately 5 cm (2 in) for the front bezel and 2.5 cm (1.0 in).

Customers are responsible for obtaining the appropriate adapters and cables.

This product may not be certified in your country for connection by any means whatsoever to interfaces of public telecommunications networks. Further certification may be required by law prior to making any such connection. Contact IBM for information.

You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet website or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.
