The main benefits of TSSC include:

  • Remote support enablement
  • Faster data offload through broadband call home utilizing Electronic Customer Care
  • Reduced repair costs
  • Improved serviceability
  • Better proactive maintenance

TSSC enables remote support for many virtual tape storage product frames and unique attached tape systems. Some examples of unique attached tape systems are IBM TS3500 and the 3592 Model C07 Tape Controller.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM TSSC enables remote support for up to 24 systems in tape libraries and virtual tape systems or 43 unique attached tape systems. A tape library or virtual tape system reserves a block of IP addresses on the TSSC network. Examples of tape libraries and virtual tape systems are IBM TS7740, TS7720, and TS7650G. The TSSC is required to provide the remote support capabilities for the tape libraries and virtual tape systems. All remote support is provided by the TSSC.

Remote support capabilities include:

  • Call home problem reporting capability with staged, error-specific data gathering for support
  • Call-in capability with authenticated access through a modem or broadband, including file transfers and multiple connections with attached systems
  • Simultaneous call home and call-in capability using the modem and a broadband connection
  • Automatic wellness checking for attached systems, with the exception of the 3494 and 3584 machine types
  • Ability to defer certain types of call home activities to specific business hours
  • Automatic download and storage of new tape drive code images through a call home connection
  • Connectivity to the Remote Technical Assistance Information Network (RETAIN)
  • Housing of information centers for customer engineer reference

TSSC provides the focal point for local service activities within the data center. The TSSC is attached through a private 100 Mbps Ethernet network to each tape library or virtual tape system, enabling many service functions to be performed at the console. TSSC delivers the following local service configuration tools and applications:

  • Capability to telnet to multiple tape systems and simultaneously perform multiple service tasks from the TSSC
  • GUI for tape system and tape drive service diagnostic utilities
  • Capability to broadcast control unit and tape drive code images to tape systems for subsequent activation from the TSSC
  • Diagnostic tools for verifying communications with attached systems
  • Graphical interface for monitoring the health of the systems, managing the firewall rules of the TSSC, configuring call home rules and settings, and utilizing network tools

IBM TSSC is available in a rack-mount version for installation.

Feature number 2725 provides the enhanced rack-mountable TSSC 1U server and an Ethernet cable for connection to the rack-mount switch.

In order for IBM to gain remote access to the machine with the introduction of the new TSSC feature number 2725, feature number 2748 for a new optical drive must also be ordered for use with the TS3000 System Console.

The TSSC new Tiny PC server and optical drive are available for the TS3500 Library as features numbers 2725 and 2748.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.
