| Overview |
The DS5000 series midrange disk system offers a 2000 GB (2 TB)/7200 rpm Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) II disk drive module (DDM) and a 300 GB Solid State Drive (SSD).
The 2 TB/7200 rpm SATA II disk drive features can double the current storage capacity of DS5100 and DS5300 storage configurations when using SATA drives. A 2 TB/7200 rpm SATA II DDM feature is available for use in the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit and the EXP5060 High Density Storage Enclosure.
Additionally, a high-performance 300 GB Solid State Drive (SSD) feature is available for the EXP5000 Expansion Unit and complements the currently available high-performance 73 GB SSD feature.

Limitations
DS5000 midrange disk system controllers must be at one of the following firmware levels to enable support of the below disk drive features: 7.60.28.xx or later, 7.50.12.xx, or 7.36.14.xx.

Before powering up the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit, follow the installation and setup instructions provided with the unit. The EXP5000 requires a minimum number of disk drive modules disk drive modules be installed in the unit before powering up. Refer to the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit installation and setup instructions shipped with the machine for details.
A maximum of 20 SSDs are supported installed in EXP5000 expansion units attached to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller.
Planning information
You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called "BIOS"), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet Web site or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.
