| Description |
IBM System Storage TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z is a virtual tape library (VTL) that appears to applications as one automated tape library. It is designed to help address back up application needs of System z data centers. The TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1.1 software is typically able to support implementation with minimal change to existing backup policies, practices, or procedures. The host application can access virtual tape drives, and cartridges just as it would in a physical tape library environment. Typical System z VTL solutions provide about 2.5:1 compression of the data backed up. The TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z, featuring HyperFactor data deduplication technology, can help significantly reduce the amount of storage capacity required by up to 25 times.
Data protection pain points in the data center
Enterprise data centers require a high-performance, high-capacity reliable, and scalable disk-based data protection solution. Delivering high-level data protection is increasingly difficult for many reasons:
- Information volume is growing almost exponentially.
- Shrinking tape data processing and restoring windows require more efficient high-performance data protection solutions.
- Pressure to lower capital expenditures for data infrastructure is driving the need for a simpler way to deploy and manage data protection solutions.
- Increased need to more efficiently manage disk space of existing infrastructure by improving utilization of current hardware.
- Increasing need to support more efficient, easier to manage, disaster recovery strategies.
TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z
Features HyperFactor Technology, which is designed to provide in-line deduplication capabilities, boasts the following core differentiators:
- In-line deduplication: Helps avoid disruption to data protection processes. Competitive product solutions deployed as a post-process methodology can increase the time needed for tape operations window, and require significantly more disk space.
- Flexible disk-based storage options support flexible configurations for different environments.
- Data reduction: Provides up to 25 times or more data volume reduction. (Actual deduplication ratios are data-dependent and may vary.)
- TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1.1 software architecture supports up to 1 PB of data repository.
- High-availability: Clustered configuration available to provide hardware redundancy in the event of a node failure.
- Data integrity: HyperFactor Technology helps avoid "hash collisions" or "false positive" data matches.

TS7680 Call home and feature TS3000
The TS7680 calls home through the TS3000 System Console (TSSC). The TSSC provides remote support for as many as 24 RMSS product frames. The TS7680 frame reserves a block of 10 IP addresses on the TSSC network.
The TSSC is required to provide the remote support capabilities for the TS7680 product. The TS7680 product components and subsystems are entitled for service using the frame serial number. The TSSC is required to associate the TS7680 frame serial number with the sub-systems inside the frame. All remote support for the TS7680 is provided by the TSSC.
The remote support capabilities include:
- Call home problem reporting capability with staged, error-specific Data Gathering for support.
- Call-in capability with authenticated access (via modem) including file transfer and multiple connections with attached systems; simultaneous call home is available calling in on the modem and sending call home data over the Internet.
- Automatic wellness checking for attached systems.
- Ability to defer certain types of call home activity to specific business hours.
- Automatic archival of log files for most attached tape systems for subsequent support reference.
- Automatic download and storage of new tape drive code images via modem connection with IBM.
- Remote Technical Assistance Information Network (RETAIN).
The TSSC provides the focal point for local service activities within the data center. The TSSC is attached via a private Ethernet network to each TS7680 frame. Many service functions are performed at the console. The TSSC provides the following local service applications and configuration tools:
- TS7680 frame serial number entry and complex configuration to include all sub-systems within the TS7680 frame.
- Network Time Protocol server services.
- Centralized data collection
- Ability to connect to each sub system within the TS7680 and simultaneously execute multiple service tasks.
- Ability to download Microcode updates for the subsystems.
The TSSC contains diagnostic tools for verifying communications with IBM RETAIN, as well as a Graphic user interface for configuring, backing up, and restoring TSSC settings.

The following service selections are available as maintenance options for your machine type.
On-site Service
IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
Service levels are:
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4 hour average response
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 2 hour average response
Machine Exchange Service
IBM will initiate shipment of a replacement machine to your location. You are responsible for its installation and verification of operation. You must pack the failed machine into the shipping container that contained the replacement machine and return the failed machine to IBM. Transportation charges, both ways, are paid by IBM. You may be charged for the replacement machine if IBM does not receive the failed machine within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.
Non-IBM parts service
Under certain conditions, IBM provides services for selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services.
This service includes hardware problem determination (PD) on the non-IBM parts (for example, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory) installed within IBM machines and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.
If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.
