Server information
If attaching an HMC to a new server or adding function to an existing server that requires a firmware update, the HMC machine code may need to be updated.
To determine the HMC machine code level required for the firmware level on any server, go to the following Web site to access the Fix Level Recommendation Tool (FLRT) on or after the planned availability date for this product. FLRT will identify the correct HMC machine code for the selected system firmware level.
If a single HMC is attached to multiple servers, the HMC machine code level must be updated to the server with the most recent firmware level. All prior levels of server firmware are supported with the latest HMC machine code level.
If an HMC is used to manage any POWER7 processor-based server, the HMC must be a CR3 model, or later, rack-mount HMC or C05 model, or later, deskside HMC.
When IBM Systems Director is used to manage an HMC or if the HMC manages more than 254 partitions, the HMC should have 3 GB of RAM minimum and be CR3 model, or later, rack-mount or C06 model, or later, deskside.
The following servers require an HMC. The HMC is used to manage partitions and support other critical functions on these servers.
- System p5® 570
- System p5 575
- System p5 590
- System p5 595
- System i® 570 (POWER6 processor-based)
- System i 595
- Power® 560
- Power 570
- Power 575
- Power 595
- Power 770
- Power 780
An HMC is required to manage partitions on the following servers and is recommended for other critical functions; however, simple configurations without partitions or temporary CoD can be managed without an HMC.
- System p5 570
- System i 570 (POWER5 processor-based)
An HMC is optional for all other Power Systems servers. For these systems, customers must choose either an HMC or IVM to manage partitions. IVM is part of the optional PowerVM virtualization software.
Customers choosing the HMC must use it to create, define, and change partitions or CoD resources, but it is not required to run the partitions.
An HMC is required to manage more than one IBM i, AIX, or Linux partition, directly controlling its I/O partition on the following servers:
- System i 515
- System i 525
- System i 550
- System i 570
An HMC is recommended for managing all CoD, including permanent activations. An HMC is required for temporary CoD, including the following:
- Trial CoD
- On/Off CoD
- Utility CoD
Multiple POWER5, or later, processor-based servers can be managed by one HMC, either physically attached to the server or logically attached over a LAN.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
The IBM 7042-C08 Deskside Hardware Management Console is capable as of June 4, 2010, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of minimally satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided the user attaches another system that contains the assistive technology necessary to interact through a command-line interface.

Hardware requirements
- Each HMC must have access to a display, a keyboard, and a mouse.
- Information regarding supported Linux distributions on Power System servers is available at
- If redundant HMC function is desired, the servers can be attached to two separate HMCs to address availability requirements. Environments may include 7310-C05, -C06, -CR3, -CR4, and 7042-C06, -C07, -CR4, -CR5 as well as 7042-C08 HMCs. All HMCs must have the same level of HMC Licensed Machine Code.
- Higher availability configurations may require the use of an Ethernet hub. An Ethernet hub will provide a physical connection from the HMC to each server rather than a logical Ethernet connection over a LAN.
- Each console must be configured with feature number 0962.
Software requirements
The following Web browsers have been tested for connection support with the HMC Licensed Machine Code V7R711:
- Microsoft® Internet
Explorer 6.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0
- Internet Explorer 7.0 is required if you are using IPv6 addresses on the network interface over which the browser is connected.
- Internet Explorer 8.0 is not supported; however, the Internet Explorer compatibility mode seems to alleviate most problems.
- If your browser is configured to use an Internet proxy, then local Internet addresses should be included in the exception list. Consult your network administrator for more information. If you still need to use the proxy to get to the HMC, enable "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" under the Advanced tab in your Internet Options window.
- Firefox 1.5.0.7
- For Firefox 2.0, make sure the JavaScript options to raise or lower windows and move or resize existing windows are enabled. To enable these options, go to the Content tab in the browser's Options dialog, click Advanced next to the Enable JavaScript option, then select the raise or lower windows options (a check mark appears) and move or resize existing windows options (a check mark appears). These features allow you to switch easily between HMC tasks.
Limitations
- The HMC is a dedicated-function device used only for the control and service functions of the POWER5, or later, processor-based servers it manages. It is not available for use as a general purpose computing resource.
- An internal modem (#0033) is not allowed for Brazil or Honduras.
The HMC user interface is available in the following languages:
- Brazilian Portuguese
- Catalan
- Czech
- Dutch
- English
- French
- French/Canadian
- German
- Hungarian
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Polish
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Simplified Chinese
- Slovakian
- Spanish
- Traditional Chinese
However, integrated Repair and Verify for CRUs is available at this time in English only. Customers who would like access to the translated services guides will be directed to an external Web site from their HMC.
If additional assistance is required with interpreting English Repair and Verify:
- Contact the IBM Hardware Support Center (using the method you would normally use to obtain support for your hardware), and ask for Hardware Support. Be sure to have your HMC machine type and serial number available. Indicate that you have problems with translated Repair and Verify.
- An IBM Service Support Representative (SSR) may be dispatched to your site to assist with your repair and verify activity.
- The HMC and attached servers may not be accessible to you while the SSR is working.
Planning information
Cable orders
One Ethernet cable is required to attach the HMC to the system CPC. This cable can be customer-supplied or purchased from IBM.
Security, auditability, and control
This product uses the security and auditability features of the server operating system. Use of these facilities is optional. For servers with the IBM i operating system, the security measures supplied by IBM i are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The IBM i security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only the functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the IBM i controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures.
This product uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5.2, 5.3, or 6.1 operating system on an AIX partition that the HMC controls.
The HMC network connection to the partitions is based on a component of IBM's Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) called Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC). The only operations permitted through this connection are hardware error event collection and hardware inventory data collection, dynamic LPAR resource movement coordination for AIX and Linux partitions, and partition shutdown and reboot for AIX and Linux partitions.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

| IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) may be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty CRU Service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under one of the On-site Service levels specified above. For additional information on the CRU Service, see the warranty information.
Maintenance services
If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service, depending on the types of maintenance service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically, via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of maintenance service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information. The following service selections are available as maintenance options for your machine type.
On-site Service
IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.
Service levels are:
- 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next-business-day response
- 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, 4-hour average response
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4-hour average response
- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 2-hour average response
Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service
If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or hard disk drive), and depending upon the maintenance service offerings in your geography, IBM will ship the CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next-business-day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, 1) return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU and 2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.
CRUs may be provided as part of the machine's standard maintenance service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under any of the On-site Service levels specified above.
Non-IBM parts service
Under certain conditions, IBM provides services for selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services.
This service includes hardware problem determination (PD) on the non-IBM parts (for example, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory) installed within IBM machines and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.
If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.

Rates and offerings are subject to change, extension, or withdrawal without notice.
Financing solutions from IBM Global Financing can help you stretch your budget and affordably acquire the new product. But beyond the initial acquisition, our end-to-end approach to IT management can also help keep your technologies current, reduce costs, minimize risk, and preserve your ability to make flexible equipment decisions throughout the entire technology life cycle.
