| Description |
IT organizations continue to face unprecedented data growth as more platforms, applications, and users connect to the data center network. In turn, the storage network infrastructure must continue evolving to enable fast, continuous, and cost-effective access to mission-critical data from anywhere in the world.
To address this challenge, the IBM System Storage SAN06B-R is designed to provide reliable and cost-effective network infrastructure for remote data replication, backup, and migration. Leveraging next-generation Fibre Channel and advanced Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) technology, the IBM System Storage SAN06B-R is designed to provide a flexible and extensible platform to move data. Whether configured for simple point-to-point or comprehensive multisite SAN extension, SAN06B-R addresses business continuity, compliance, and global data access requirements. Up to 16 8 Gbps Fibre Channel ports and 6 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports provide Fibre Channel and FCIP bandwidth, port density, and throughput for application performance over WAN links.
The IBM System Storage SAN06B-R Extension Switch combines Fibre Channel switching and routing capabilities with hardware-assisted FCIP traffic forwarding over IP wide area networks (WAN). The SAN06B-R is designed to provide remote storage and SAN connectivity. It integrates a variety of capabilities, such as Fibre Channel routing, Storage-Optimized TCP (SO-TCP), hardware-based compression, write and read acceleration for disk and tape, IP Security (IPSec) encryption, FCIP trunking and adaptive rate limiting to help deliver a high performance, reliable, and secure distance-connectivity solution. This makes the SAN06B-R suitable for a variety of IT initiatives, including business continuance, site mirroring, replication, and data migration across virtually unlimited distances.
Based on the fifth-generation Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology combined with high performing network processors, the SAN06B-R is designed to provide FCIP solution designed to improve application performance over IP WANs while supporting reliability and availability and Fibre Channel port speed at 8 Gbps. In addition, this platform offers a number of new features designed to enhance performance and manageability of the switch.
The IBM System Storage SAN06B-R is designed to support the following performance and optimization technologies.
FCIP trunking is designed to virtualize two or more TCP connections as part of a single FCIP tunnel. FCIP trunking combines multiple IP source and destination address pairs into a logical high-bandwidth FCIP trunk spanning multiple physical ports to provide load balancing and network failure resiliency. These connections, called circuits, will be explicitly configured to be part of an FCIP tunnel to increase the tunnel bandwidth and provide failover paths in the event of a network failure. The functionality of the FCIP trunking and the additional TCP connections is transparent to the applications using the FCIP tunnel.
Adaptive Rate Limiting feature is designed to meet minimum bandwidth requirements for each tunnel while making the full utilization of the available network bandwidth without adverse throughput performance impact at high traffic load.
Hardware-based compression is designed to deliver the ability to maximize throughput over lower bandwidth links in the wide area network, supporting improved cost efficiencies of FCIP. The SAN06B-R compresses FC frames before they are encapsulated into FCIP packets.
FCIP Quality of Service (QoS) provides high-priority, medium-priority, and low-priority handling of initiator-target flows within the same FCIP tunnel for transmission over the WAN.
FC Routing delivers fabric isolation in conjunction with FCIP, enabling separate fabrics to share devices without merging across the IP network.
FCIP Fast Write accelerates SCSI write processing, supporting increased performance of synchronous and asynchronous replication applications across high-latency WAN connections.
Open Systems Tape Pipelining helps accelerate read and write tape processing over distance, reducing backup and restore windows.
Storage-Optimized TCP increases TCP window size and flow control, helping to accelerate TCP transport for storage applications.
Multiple logical FCIP tunnels (up to 8 in FOS V6.3; VE or VEx) allow for scalable connectivity between sites between two SAN06B-R models or when it is connected to a 8 Gbps Routing Blade.
The SAN06B-R Extension Switch is designed to include the following attributes:

Optional features
R06 Enterprise Package (#7731): The R06 Enterprise Package offers a convenient method to order a set of optional features bundled into one orderable feature number. Feature #7731 consists of one of each Advanced Performance Monitor (# 7734), Trunking Activation (#7735), Adaptive Networking (#7736), and Fabric Watch (#7740).
R06 Port Activation (#7732): This activation feature enables full hardware capabilities on the SAN06B-R base model, increasing the number of Fibre Channel ports from 4 to 16 and the number of GbE ports from 2 to 6. A SAN06B-R with the upgrade license also supports up to eight FCIP tunnels instead of two and supports advanced capabilities like Open Systems tape read/write pipelining. A SAN06B-R must have the upgrade license to add FICON Management Server (CUP).
R06 8 Gbps Advanced Extension (#7733): This license enables two advanced extension features, FCIP Trunking and Adaptive Rate Limiting (ARL). The FCIP Trunking feature allows multiple (up to 4 in FOS V6.3) IP source and destination address pairs (defined as FCIP Circuits) via multiple (up to 4 in FOS V6.3) 1 GE interfaces to provide a high bandwidth FCIP tunnel and failover resiliency. The ARL feature provides a minimum bandwidth guarantee for each tunnel with full utilization of the available network bandwidth without impacting throughput performance under high traffic load. ARL is performed on the FCIP tunnel connection to dynamically change the rate at which the FCIP tunnel transmits data through the TCP connections. ARL will use the information from the TCP connections to determine and adjust the rate limit for the FCIP tunnel dynamically. This allows FCIP connections to utilize the maximum available bandwidth.
R06 Advanced performance monitor (#7734): Enables performance monitoring of networked storage resources.
R06 Trunking activation (#7735): Provides the ability to aggregate multiple physical links into one logical link. With ISL Trunking Activation, FC packets can be efficiently distributed across multiple links between two SAN b-type fabric devices, while preserving in-order delivery. You can use ISL Trunking between any of the supported 2 Gbps, 4 Gbps, or 8 Gbps b-type models. Both SAN b-type fabric switches must have ISL Trunking activated.
R06 Adaptive networking (#7736): Adaptive Networking provides a set of capabilities allowing high-priority connections to obtain the bandwidth necessary for optimum performance, even in congested environments. The quality of service (QoS) SID/DID Prioritization and Ingress Rate Limiting features are the components of this license option and are available on all 8 Gbps platforms.
R06 FICON w/CUP activation (#7737):FICON with CUP Activation is designed to provide in-band management of the supported SAN b-type switch, router, and director products by System Automation for z/OS® from IBM System z10 EC, z10 BC, z9 EC, z9 BC, and zSeries® 990, 900, 890, and 800 servers. To enable in-band management on multiple switches and directors, each switch, router, or director must be configured with the appropriate FICON CUP feature. This support is designed to provide a single point of control for managing connectivity in active FICON I/O configurations. System Automation for OS/390® or z/OS can now concurrently manage IBM 9032 ESCON® Directors, as well as supported SAN b-type switch and director products with FICON. You must have R06 8 Gbps Advanced Extension (#7733) license activated prior to enabling R06 FICON with CUP Activation feature.
R06 Integrated routing (#7739): Integrated routing allows any port in a SAN768B, SAN384B, SAN80B-4, SAN40B-4, and SANR06B to be configured as an (EX_port) supporting Fibre Channel Routing (FCR). Also allows for VEX_ports for FCR over FCIP tunnels. Integrated routing enables FCR support on the 8 Gbps ports as a native capability; hence they are referred to as native EX_ports. This eliminates the need to add a routing blade or use the SAN06B-R for FCR purposes, and also provides double the bandwidth for each FC Router connection when attached to another 8 Gbps-capable port.
R06 Fabric watch (#7740): Enables real-time proactive awareness of the health, performance, and security of each switch. Fabric Watch also includes Port Fencing capabilities. It automatically alerts network managers to problems and helps avoid costly failures by providing:
- Real-time tracking of numerous fabric and switch elements
- Automatic event notifications when switch and fabric elements exceed thresholds
- Security, availability, and congestion monitoring thresholds and alerts
R06 Extended fabric (#7742): Extended Fabric Activation extends SAN fabrics beyond the FC standard 10 km by increasing the internal switch buffers to help maintain performance on ISLs at distances - depending on platform - of up to 3,000 km.
2498-R06 Firmware upgrade renewal, one year (#7716): The initial purchase of an IBM System Storage SAN06B-R includes one year of firmware upgrade entitlement. This feature provides you with one additional year of renewal for upgrades included in future releases of the Fabric Operating System firmware. If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.

Licensed machine code
The IBM System Storage SAN b-type (Brocade) family of products is licensed for use by a customer on the IBM machine for which it was provided by Brocade under the terms and conditions of the Brocade End User License Agreement, to enable a specific machine to function in accordance with its specifications, and only for the capacity authorized by IBM and acquired by the customer. You can obtain the agreement by contacting your IBM representative.
IBM may release changes to the licensed machine code. IBM plans to make the licensed machine code changes available for download from IBM technical support at
If the machine does not function as warranted and your problem can be resolved through your application of downloadable licensed machine code, you are responsible for downloading and installing these designated licensed machine code changes as IBM specifies. If you would prefer, you may request IBM to install the downloadable licensed Machine code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

A reduced charge is available to qualified education customers. The educational allowance may not be added to any other discount or allowance.
