Overview |
The IBM System Storage EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit is available for attachment to all N series systems except N3300, N3700, N5200, and N5500. The EXN3000 provides low-cost high-capacity Serially Attached SCSI (SAS) Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disk storage for the IBM N series system storage.
The EXN3000 is a 4U disk storage expansion unit. It may be mounted in any industry standard 19 inch rack. The EXN3000 contains:
- Dual redundant hot-pluggable integrated power supplies and cooling fans
- Dual redundant disk expanion unit switched controllers
- 24 hard disk drive slots
The EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit is shipped with no disk drives unless disk drives are included in the order. In that case, the disk drives will be installed in the plant.

Description |
The EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit is a 4U disk storage expansion unit. It may be mounted in any industry standard 19-inch rack. The EXN3000 contains:
- Dual redundant hot-pluggable integrated power supplies and cooling fans
- Dual redundant disk expansion unit switched controllers
- 24 hard disk drive slots
- Diagnostic and status LEDs
The EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit can be shipped with no disk drives
installed. Disk drives ordered with the EXN3000 will be installed by IBM in
the plant prior to shipping. Disk drives may be of 300 GB, 450 GB, 500 GB,
and 1 TB physical capacity. SAS and SATA drives may not be intermixed; the
EXN3000 is either a SAS storage controller or a SATA storage controller. The
drives must be ordered as features of the EXN3000.
Note: For an initial order
of an N series system, at least one of the storage expansion units must be
ordered with at least five disk drive features.

Additional power supplies |
SAS disk power supply (#1102)
The SAS disk power supply provides a pair of power supplies for use with SAS disk drives. The SAS disk power supply provides a pair of power supplies for use with SAS disk drives. This feature is required when SAS disks are used in the EXN3000 due to the increased power supply demand of those disks.
For enclosures with SATA drives this feature is optional.
Cable features
Cables must be ordered to connect the EXN3000 to an N series system, or to connect to another EXN3000. The "QSFP" (#2050 - #2054) and "ACP" (#2060 - #2062) cables are corequisites; one of each must be ordered with the EXN3000.
2.0 m Mini SAS-QSFP Cable (#2050)
This feature provides two 2-meter cables for connecting the EXN3000 to the mini-SAS adapter used in the N3600 (feature 1060). One SAS RJ45 ACP cable feature is required by this feature.
5.0 m Mini SAS-QSFP Cable (#2051)
This feature provides two 5-meter cables for connecting the EXN3000 to the mini-SAS adapter used in the N3600 (feature 1060). One SAS RJ45 ACP cable feature is required by this feature.
0.5 m SAS QSFP-QSFP Cable (#2052)
This feature provides two half-meter cable for connecting the EXN3000 to the quad port SAS adapter, feature #1061, or between EXN3000s within a SAS stack. One SAS RJ45 ACP cable feature is required by this feature.
2.0 m SAS QSFP-QSFP Cable (#2053)
This feature provides two 2-meter cable for connecting the EXN3000 to the quad port SAS adapter, feature #1061, or between EXN3000s within a SAS stack. One SAS RJ45 ACP cable feature is required by this feature.

300 GB SAS Drive
This feature provides one 300 GB SAS drive. Physical storage capacity is 300 GB.
450 GB SAS Drive
This feature provides one 450 GB SAS drive. Physical storage capacity is 450 GB.
500 GB SATA Drive
This feature provides one 500 GB SATA drive. Physical storage capacity is 500 GB.
1 TB SATA Drive
This feature provides one 1 TB SATA drive. Physical storage capacity is 1 TB.
Rack installation feature
The EXN3000 is designed to be mounted in a rack. One of the following rack installation options must be specified:

Orders for additional disk drives
MES bulk ordering
This feature must be specified when additional (or replacement) drives are ordered via MES order. When feature #9555 is included in an MES order, the maximum number of features that may be ordered is 99.
Power (line) cord features
The EXN3000 ships standard with feature #9000 to connect the 2857 to a rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) that has IEC 320, sheet C13, type power outlets.
If the EXN3000 will be installed in a rack with a PDU that has wall type power outlets, an alternative power cord feature must be selected based on the country or region in which the system will be installed:

When this feature is specified, a 48-inch power cord is supplied with the expansion unit that is to be installed in the topmost position of a 42U rack. Specify feature #9020 only if you know that the expansion unit will be installed in the field (not installed in the rack by IBM prior to shipment) and then, only if it is to be installed in the topmost position of a 42-inch rack.

Hardware requirements
The EXN3000 may be ordered with no disk drives, but an N series storage controller cannot be installed unless at least one attached expansion unit has at least five disk drives installed.
Limitations
- The EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit is supported only in rack installations.
- This product is functional with the System i® and OpenPower® platforms. However, on the System i, support is only available on Power Linux and AIX® partitions, not i5/OS®.
Planning information
Customer responsibilities
Following good safety practice, IBM recommends that two or more persons install this product.
Physical configuration and installation planning for the 2857 is a customer responsibility. Information about physical configuration and installation requirements, including equipment, site, and power requirements, can be found in the IBM System Storage EXN3000 Storage Expansion Unit Hardware and Service Guide(GC52-1346) and the IBM System Storage N series Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0543).
You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated machine code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet Web site or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install machine code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.
Cable orders
SAS cables are required to connect an EXN3000 expansion unit to an N series system. Cables can be purchased using expansion unit features.

Installability
Estimated time to unpack an EXN3000 SAS/SATA expansion unit, install it in the rack, and perform a simple discovery and configuration is one hour.

Warranty service
If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. If applicable to your product, parts considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.
Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country and location specific information. This product is covered by the following types of service.
Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service and On-site for other selected parts
CRU Service
IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU.
Tier 1 CRU Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.
For machines with on-site same-day response service, IBM will replace a Tier 1 CRU part at your request, at no additional charge.
Tier 2 CRU
You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, 1) return instructions and a container is shipped with the replacement CRU and 2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.
The following parts have been designated as Tier 1 CRU parts:
- AC power cord
- AC power supply
- Disk drive
- Cables
- Memory modules
- Wrap plug
- Operator panel
On-site Service
IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
- 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next-business-day response
Warranty service upgrades: During the warranty period, warranty service upgrades provide an enhanced level of On-site Service for an additional charge. A warranty service upgrade must be purchased during the warranty period and is for a fixed term (duration). It is not refundable or transferable and may not be prorated. If required, IBM will provide the warranty service upgrade enhanced level of On-site Service acquired by the customer. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically by access to an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. On-site Service IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose. The following service selections are available as warranty upgrades for your machine type.

CRUs may be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty CRU Service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under one of the On-site Service levels specified above. Maintenance services

If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or hard disk drive), and depending upon the maintenance service offerings in your geography, IBM will ship the CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request. Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, 1) return instructions and a container is shipped with the replacement CRU and 2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement. CRUs may be provided as part of the machine's standard maintenance service except that you may install a CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under any of the On-site Service levels specified above.
