The following servers require an HMC. The HMC is used to manage partitions
and support other critical functions on these servers.
- System
p® 570
- System
p5® 575
- System
p5 590
- System
p5 595
- System
i® 570 (POWER6 processor-based)
- System
i 595
- Power 560
- Power 570
- Power 575
- Power 595
An HMC is required to manage partitions on the following servers and is
recommended for other critical functions; however, simple configurations without
partitions or temporary CoD can be managed without an HMC.
- System
p5 570
- System
i 570 (POWER5 processor-based)
An HMC is optional for all other Power Systems servers. For these systems,
customers must choose either an HMC or IVM to manage partitions. IVM is part
of the optional PowerVM virtualization
software.
Customers choosing the HMC must use it to create, define, and change partitions
or CoD resources, but it is not required to run the partitions.
An HMC is required to manage more than one IBM i, AIX, or Linux partition, directly controlling
its I/O partition on the following System i servers:
- System
i 515
- System
i 525
- System
i 550
- System
i 570
- Power 570
An HMC is recommended for managing all CoD, including permanent activations.
An HMC is required for temporary CoD, including the following:
- Trial CoD
- On/Off CoD
- Reserve CoD
- Utility CoD
Multiple POWER5, POWER5+, POWER6,
and POWER6+ processor-based
servers can be managed by one HMC, either physically attached to the server
or logically attached over a LAN.
IBM Electronic
Service Agent (call home) is integrated with the HMC and should be activated
for faster hardware support for all attached Power systems. IBM System Support representatives will
enable Electronic
Service Agent free-of-charge for customers purchasing IBM Power 570, 575,
and 595 servers.
The HMC offers serviceability tools for the systems it controls. The HMC
is connected to a dedicated port on the service processor of the system via
an Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connections from HMC to System p5 575,
590, and 595, System
i5® 590, and Power 575 and 595 must be via private LAN with the
HMC configured as a DHCP server, whereas other POWER5, POWER5+, POWER6, and POWER6+ processor-based models can be
either on a private or public LAN. LAN tools such as Electronic Service Agent for
call home and error log notification are available through modem or Internet
connection (SSL supported for call home via HTTPS) for determining problems
and providing service support.

Planning information
Cable orders
One Ethernet cable is required to attach the HMC to the system CPC. This
cable can be customer-supplied or purchased from IBM.
Security, auditability, and control
This product uses the security and auditability features of the server
operating system. Use of these facilities is optional. For servers with the IBM i
operating system, the security measures supplied by IBM i are designed to reduce the risk of
users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The IBM i
security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit
a user to only the functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security
option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during
normal operations. To achieve increased security, the IBM i controls should be combined with physical
security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures.
This product uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5.2, 5.3,
or 6.1 operating system on an AIX partition that the HMC controls.
The HMC network connection to the partitions is based on a component of
IBM's Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) called Resource Monitoring
and Control (RMC). The only operations permitted through this connection are
hardware error event collection and hardware inventory data collection, dynamic
LPAR resource movement coordination for AIX and Linux partitions, and partition shutdown
and reboot for AIX and Linux partitions.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation
of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls
in application systems and communications facilities.

Service Agent and IBM Electronic Services Web Portal comprise the IBM Electronic
Services solution.
Electronic
Service Agent automatically reports hardware events, such as system errors
and performance issues. Systems enabled with this tool "call home" to IBM Support,
24 hours a day, 7 days a week -- at no additional cost.
Electronic
Service Agent is now even easier to activate. A streamlined setup wizard
can be accessed at the HMC Service Management menu. For your convenience, Electronic
Service Agent is configured at installation time for every IBM Power 570, 575,
and 595 server. IBM systems
support representatives configure the tool when the system is installed, at
no charge. To help with planning and configuration, a new security white paper
describes the secure data exchange between the Hardware Management Console
(HMC) and the IBM Service
Delivery Center (SDC) and the methods and protocols for this exchange. To
read the white paper and prepare for Electronic Service Agent installation,
visit the Reference Guide section at
- http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic
Integrated with the HMC, and part of the AIX and IBM i operating systems, Electronic
Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report
system failures and utilization issues to IBM, resulting in faster problem resolution
and increased availability for your systems. System configuration and inventory
information collected by Electronic Service Agent can be
viewed by IBM Support
for faster problem resolution and enable other proactive support.
The Electronic Services Web Portal is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services
and support. This Web portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources
for assistance in resolving technical problems. By using the system snapshot
information that Electronic
Service Agent transmits, the newly improved My Systems and My Search
functions make it even easier for you to track system inventory and find pertinent
fixes. The My Notifications tool can even inform you of recommended fixes
and updates that are tailored to your specific configuration.
Benefits
- Designed for higher availability: Electronic Service Agent is
designed to enhance your Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by offering faster
hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This
can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the
error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Around-the-clock
monitoring and reporting can lessen dependence on human intervention or off-hours
customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
- Security: Electronic
Service Agent is designed for security -- monitoring, reporting, and
storing the data at IBM. Electronic Service Agent securely
transmits data either via the Internet or modem, and can be configured to
communicate securely through gateways to give you a single point of exit from
your site. System inventory information is stored in a secure database that
is protected behind IBM firewalls. Your business applications or business
data is not transmitted to IBM.
- More accurate reporting: Better reporting and automatic problem routing
mean higher system availability and fix confidence. Because system information
and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the
service request, you do not need to find and send system information, decreasing
the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error
data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles
are appended to the problem record.
- Customized features: Associating your IBM ID when activating Electronic
Service Agent gives you access to valuable capabilities in the IBM Electronic
Services portfolio.
My Systems lets you check any of your systems, anywhere in the world. See
what firmware, operating system, and fix levels are installed. It enables
better management of the datacenter and helps in deploying relevant fixes
and technical updates across the IT infrastructure. My Systems gives you
the control to compare and optimize your environment and avoid unplanned outages.
My Notifications is another valuable service to help avoid system downtime
and maintain the best performance for your IT assets. This new service can
notify you of critical and required fixes, product support updates, and other
custom recommendations that are tailored to your IT environment. It is like
having a proactive IBM Support Representative at your fingertips with knowledge
of the latest technical support guidelines. These recommendations are based
on system configuration, collected and submitted by Electronic Service Agent and
delivered via the Web or e-mail.
Performance Management (PM) for IBM Power Systems: Understanding and managing
the system's utilization and performance are critical in today's rapidly changing
business environment. You need to anticipate potential service disruption
due to capacity constraint issues. It is equally important to understand what
else your system could be doing with available resources. Addressing these
needs is precisely what PM for Power Systems and associated tools are
designed to help. Using data transmitted by Electronic Service Agent,
PM for Power can
show trends indicating key system utilization and growth.

Financing offers competitive financing to credit-qualified customers to assist
them in acquiring IT solutions. Offerings include financing for IT acquisition,
including hardware, software, and services, from both IBM and other manufacturers or vendors.
Offerings (for all customer segments: small, medium, and large enterprise),
rates, terms, and availability can vary by country. Contact your local IBM Global
Financing organization or visit
- http://www.ibm.com/financing
IBM Global
Financing offerings are provided through IBM Credit LLC in the United States, and
other IBM subsidiaries
and divisions worldwide to qualified commercial and government customers.
Rates are based on a customer's credit rating, financing terms, offering
type, equipment type, and options, and may vary by country. Other restrictions
may apply. Rates and offerings are subject to change, extension, or withdrawal
without notice.
Financing solutions from IBM Global Financing can help you stretch your budget
and affordably acquire the new product. But beyond the initial acquisition,
our end-to-end approach to IT management can also help keep your technologies
current, reduce costs, minimize risk, and preserve your ability to make flexible
