| Description |
IBM Storage Solutions Rack 2101 Model N42 features
Power distribution
The Model N42 rack is designed to support either base Power Distribution Units (PDUs) or Intelligent Power Distribution Units (iPDUs). At least one power distribution unit feature must be ordered for each Model N42 rack.
Side mount 1-Phase PDUs
The Side mount 1-Phase PDUs feature requires two power cord features. Each Side mount 1-Phase PDUs feature contains 12 electrical power outlets and requires its own power cords. It provides power for six dual-powered storage components. Two additional PDUs may be installed, as an option, to provide power for an additional six dual-power storage components -- for a total of 12.
The PDU feature (#7188) does not use any of the rack's 42U capacity. Power cord features for the PDUs must be selected based on the country in which the 2101-N42 rack system will be installed.
iPDUs
iPDUs are designed to help measure and monitor energy management components built into IBM systems. When installed in the IBM 2101 Model N42 rack, the iPDUs are designed to collect energy usage information on attached rack-mount storage products and report the information to the IBM Active Energy Manager over an attached customer-provided local area network (LAN). Using iPDUs and IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager, you can gain a more complete view of energy used within the datacenter.
Active Energy Manager is an extension to IBM Director and is designed to provide simplified management of power consumption across multiple IBM systems. A version of Active Energy Manager is available for System x® and System p® in their respective ordering and fulfillment systems. The Active Energy Manager offering has both no charge (free) monitoring functions and optional chargeable (fee based) management functions.
IBM Active Energy Manager is a key component of IBM's Cool Blue portfolio within Project Big Green. It is also part of the IT Optimization strategy and is delivered as part of the IBM Systems Director family. Active Energy Manager measures, monitors, and manages the energy management components built into IBM systems while enabling a cross-platform management solution. It also provides a source of energy management data that can be exploited by Tivoli® enterprise solutions such as IBM Tivoli Monitoring and IBM Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager.
The IBM 2101 Model N42 rack supports up to two sets of two PDUs, either the base PDUs or the iPDUs, for a total of four PDUs. Base PDUs and iPDUs may not be mixed within a 2101 rack. Therefore, all base PDUs must be removed from the rack when field installing iPDUs in a currently installed rack having base PDUs.
The iPDU feature (#7192) contains electrical power outlets to provide power for six dual-powered storage machines. The iPDU feature does not use any of the rack's 42U capacity. Power cord features for the iPDUs must be specified, based on the country in which the 2101 rack will be installed.
Initial order of the IBM 2101 rack
At least one PDU feature must be included in the initial order of the Model N42 rack, either #7188 or #7192. Note that feature #7188 is mutually exclusive of feature #7192; the IBM 2101 rack only supports either all base PDUs or all iPDUs.
MES (field) order for iPDUs
For an already installed IBM 2101 rack with base PDUs (feature #7188), the base PDUs may be replaced by iPDUs. One or two of feature #7192 may be ordered for field installation. The installed base PDUs are replaced (uninstalled) when installing iPDUs. Base PDUs and iPDUs may not co-reside on the same 2101 rack.
For an installed 2101 rack with only one of the iPDU features (#7192), a second feature #7192 may be ordered for field installation.
Limitations for iPDUs
- Integration and use of iPDUs requires the iPDU be attached to a customer-provided local area network (LAN). Refer to the iPDU Installation and User's Guide for more information.
- The 2101 rack supports up to two sets of two iPDUs (total of four iPDUs). Base PDUs and iPDUs may not be mixed within the 2101 rack. Therefore, all Base PDUs must be removed from the 2101 rack when installing iPDUs in a rack already having Base PDUs.
Ruggedized Rack Feature
For enhanced rigidity and stability of the rack, the optional Ruggedized Rack Feature provides additional hardware that reinforces the rack and anchors it to the floor. This hardware is designed primarily for use in locations where earthquakes are a concern. The feature includes a large steel brace or truss that bolts into the rear of the rack. It is hinged on the left side so it can swing out of the way for easy access to the rack drawers, when necessary. The Ruggedized Rack Feature also includes hardware for bolting the rack to a concrete floor or a similar surface, and bolt-in steel filler panels for any unoccupied spaces in the rack. When a rack is bolted to the floor, the front and rear anti-tilt plates are not necessary. Racks ordered with this feature are shipped without the anti-tilt plates.
Factory-installed N series machines
The following N series machines can be preinstalled in the factory in the Model N42:
- N3300 Model A10 or Model A20 (2859-A10 or 2959-A20)

The 2101 Model N42 may be ordered only as a component of an N series system order. A configurator tool, such as ECFGSSG, must be used when placing the order. The configurator will help assure that the appropriate number of racks to house all the N series machines will be included in the order. Failure to use the configurator may result in an invalid order.
Every Model N42 rack included in the N series system order must designate, via specify feature, whether it is to have N series machines installed in it at the IBM plant or if it is to be shipped with no machines installed (empty). Feature number 9001 specifies that the rack is to have N series machines installed at the plant. Feature number 9002 specifies that the rack is to be shipped empty.
The 2101 Model N42 is a CE-installed machine. When ordered for plant installaton of customer setup (CSU) N series machines, the rack will be physically installed by an IBM CE; physical installation of the CSU N series machines is a customer responsibility.
