| Overview |
The IBM System Storage DR550 is enhanced with higher capacity disk drives, secure management options, and support for IPv6 on single node systems.
- 1 TB disk drive support replacing the previous 750 GB disk drives, allowing DR550 systems to support larger capacities without increasing their footprint.
- Only specified IBM Director management servers can be set up to have access to configure the DR550. This prevents access by unauthorized IBM Director servers, limiting access to the extended configuration and management functions provided by IBM Director.
- IPv6 support enables a single node DR550 to participate in IPv6 networks, allowing these networks to have a larger number of addresses to simplify their address schemes.
IBM System Storage DR550 is designed to provide a secure, scalable, and cost-effective information retention solution designed for medium and large enterprises. The DR550 supports archiving of a broad range of information including files, e-mail, digital images, databases, applications, instant messages, and other files. DR550 offers non-rewritable, non-erasable storage controls to help prevent deletion or alteration of data stored on the system.

Hardware requirements
Management Interface Server
The supported management interface software for DR550 is the IBM Director V5.20.2.
Note: Although IBM Director server supports AIX® and AIX platforms, one of the extensions required to support DR550 File System Gateway (FSG) does not. If FSG is not part of the solution, AIX and AIX platforms may be utilized for the management interface. Table 1 reflects the platform supported.
The following tables show the hardware requirements. These are the recommended minimums to obtain reasonable performance of the IBM Director server.
The console component is automatically installed when the server is installed, however, the console can be installed separately on personal workstations to provide remote access to the management software. The console requirements match the server requirements with the exception of requiring approximately 200 MB less disk space.
To successfully install IBM Director on your server, components must meet certain minimum hardware requirements, depending on the components to be installed and the type of system on which they will be installed. To support production requirements, consider the following suggestions:
- Confirm that your server can accommodate the hardware requirements, keeping in mind that the microprocessor speed, memory, and disk-space minimum requirements are additional to the resources necessary for the software already installed on the system.
- Conduct a performance analysis to confirm that the system has sufficient capacity to handle the additional requirements of functioning as a management server or a management console.

Limitations and performance considerations
IBM Director can manage up to 5000 systems with one management server. Multiple DR550s can be managed with a single Management Interface server as well as other servers, storage and switches that are supported natively by IBM Director.
The number of systems that IBM Director can manage efficiently depends on the existing network load and the functions that you want to perform. System discovery, frequent presence checks, and alert usage can increase network traffic. Precise performance information must be ascertained in each individual environment.
IBM Director Server and IBM Director Console can be installed on non-IBM hardware as long as the system meets the hardware requirements for running that component.
Remote Support Manager (RMS)
This section provides the list of supported servers, modem and operating systems listed in the RSM for Storage Planning, Installation and User's Guide . Refer to that document for additional planning considerations.
Hardware requirements
The RSM for Storage application has the following hardware prerequisites.
Server
The RSM for Storage software is designed to run on a System x (xSeries®) server, and most System x servers can be used. If you choose to use a server that has not been specifically tested with the RSM software, the setup and configuration of the server's BIOS, and installation of the Linux operating system may be different than what is included in the documentation for the RSM software and you will need to contact IBM System x support for questions related to these other servers. IBM internal databases that support for RSM for Storage use the IBM machine type and serial numbers of the servers, and therefore a System x server must be used. The following servers have been tested with the RSM for Storage software, and installation instructions are available for configuring and using them with RSM for Storage software.
- IBM 4364 x3250
- IBM 8849 x306m
Installing on other IBM servers
You may use other IBM System x servers that meet the requirements listed below. To use servers other than those specifically tested with RSM for Storage, you will need to refer to the System x server support Web site for technical information about BIOS configuration and device drivers that may be required to install the Linux operating system or configure the server's internal RAID capability.
Server requirements include:
- 512 MB of memory
- 80 GB HDD
- Serial port
The serial port must be on the server system board. Some servers have a build-in Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) that also includes a serial port. The serial port on the RSA can not be accessed by the RSM for Storage software.
- Ethernet port
- Processor speed has not been found to be critical
Also note that the operating system installation instructions in the RSM documentation will not have been tested with other servers and there may be some slight differences. The click by click instructions in the RSM for Storage Planning, Installation and User's Guide may not apply and should therefore be viewed as a guide.
Modems
The RSM for Storage application is designed to work with an external modem attached to the first serial port. The functional requirements for the modem are minimal and most "Hayes-compatible" external modems can be used. The modem should have a minimum speed of 56K bps supporting either V.90 or V.92, and support the following "AT" commands:
- ATH0 Hangup
- o Z Reset to default settings
- & W Save as default
- S0=0 Do not answer
- D Dial
- & F Load factory default
- I3 Report software version
- I4 Report product information
- V1 Report results in word form
- X3 Report all results, but disable dial tone detection
- X4 Report all results with dial tone detection
Modem requirements for RSM for Storage are minimal and any V.92 56K modem supporting the common AT® command set should work. The RSM for Storage software has been tested with the following modems:
- Multitech MultiModem ZBA MT5634ZBA
- Multitech MultiModem II MT5600BA
- U.S. Robotics CourierTM 56K Business Modem USR3453B
Linux operating systems
Once installed, the RSM for Storage software turns the server into a single purpose appliance. Because the RSM for Storage installation modifies configuration files and interacts with several other processes, the software must be installed and run in a known environment. The RSM for Storage application is has been tested with and is supported on:
- Novell SUSE SLES 10
- Novell SUSE SLES 9 (Service Pack 3)
- Red Hat RHEL 4 AS (Update 4)
Software requirements
SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 running in 32-bit mode is required when ordering IBM System Storage DR550 File System Gateway (2229-FSG) and IBM System Storage DR550 File System Gateway Software (5639-DR1).
