Key prerequisites

A TS7740 Virtualization Engine Server can attach to FICON™ channels on System z™ servers with the appropriate levels of System z software. From four to sixteen 3592 tape drives (TS1120 Model E05 or 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives) in a TS3500 Tape Library must be attached to the TS7700, or from four to twelve 3592 tape drives in a 3494 Tape Library must be attached to the TS7700. An IBM 3953 Library Manager is required with the TS3500 Tape Library. Additional features may be required on the TS7700 components or automation frames.

Description

The Virtualization Engine TS7700 machine code Release 1.4a delivers support for these capabilities:

  • Dynamic Grid Network Balancing
  • Host Copy Control
  • Removal of a cluster from a grid
  • Cluster Cleanup
  • Upgrading a single cache unit configuration to a two cache unit configuration

Dynamic Grid Network Balancing: This function can help compensate for unbalanced network performance and control grid performance in adverse conditions.

Host Copy Control: This function is an extension of the Host Console Request function, which allows a host command to request information about the current operational status of the TS7700, its logical and physical volumes, and its physical resources.

The Host Control Copy function allows host control of logical volume copying on a cluster basis.

Removal of a cluster from a grid: This function provides instructions for a one-time process to remove a cluster from a grid. If you have a multi-cluster grid configuration, and no longer require one of the TS7700s to participate in the grid, you can remove the cluster (after all required data has been copied, removed, or expired) from the grid. The removed cluster is disabled. It cannot be returned to active use until a Cluster Cleanup has been performed.

Cluster Cleanup: This function facilitates a one-time Cluster Cleanup to clean the database, logically delete volumes from the Tape Volume Cache, and remove configuration data for host connections from a TS7700 cluster. Cluster Cleanup does not physically delete user data from the Tape Volume Cache nor from back-end stacked tape cartridges.

Upgrading a single cache unit configuration to a two cache unit configuration: A TS7740 Cache Drawer (3956 Model CX6) can be added to an existing TS7700 configuration with one 3956 Model CC6 and no 3956 Model CX6s.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 is capable, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via the following Web site

New data migration options provide superior alternatives for migrating from 3494 B20s to the TS7740. For more information on migration options, refer to Hardware Announcement, 107-392 , dated July 10, 2007.

All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice. Any reliance on these statements of general direction is at the relying party's sole risk and will not create liability or obligation for IBM.

Technical information

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

All new and enhanced capabilities available in TS7740 Release 1.4a require machine code level 8.4.1.xxx, or later to be installed on the TS7740 Server (3957 Model V06). TS7740 Server feature #0521 may be used to order and expedite the delivery of the most current level of TS7740 machine code and the associated level of Library Manager machine code.

Release 1.4a supports the following field upgrades:

  • By upgrading the number of cache units, the disk cache capacity of an existing TS7700 configuration with a single disk cache unit (one 3956 Model CC6) may be increased through the field installation of a TS7740 Cache Drawer (3956 Model CX6). Additional 1 TB Cache Enablement increments, feature #5267, may be required to allow the TS7700 to utilize the additional capacity provided by the new cache unit. The new TS7740 Cache Drawer must be ordered with Field Merge CX6 in 3952 F05, feature #9355. One Field Install 3956 CX6, feature #5649, must be ordered on the customer's installed 3952 Model F05 Tape Frame.

Note: The capability to upgrade from a two cache unit configuration to a four unit configuration is already supported.

  • Feature #4016, Remove Cluster from Grid, may be installed on an existing cluster to remove that cluster from a grid configuration. A new instance of feature #4016 is required each time this cluster is to be removed from a grid configuration.

  • Feature #4017, Cluster Cleanup, may be installed on an existing stand-alone cluster to clean the TS7700 database, logically delete volumes from the Tape Volume Cache, and remove the configuration data for the host connections. Data is not physically deleted from the Tape Volume Cache nor from back-end stacked tape cartridges. Before cleanup can occur on a TS7740 Server (3957 Model V06) with Grid Communications, feature #4015, the cluster must be removed from the grid using feature #4016. A new instance of feature #4017 is required each time Cluster Cleanup is performed.

Software requirements

There are no changes to the TS7700 software requirements for this release. Refer to the 3957 Sales Manual for information on the software requirements of the product.

Limitations

  • Cluster Cleanup cannot be performed on any cluster with feature #4015, Grid Communications, until the cluster has been removed from the grid using feature #4016.
  • Clusters that have been removed from a grid using feature #4016 will be in a disabled state and cannot be brought online until Cluster Cleanup, feature #4017, is performed and the cluster is reinstalled.
