IBM System Storage™ DS4000™ series midrange disk storage offerings of high-performance, high-availability, business-critical storage solutions have been enhanced with new software functions and features now available with DS4000 Storage Manager V10.10.
Storage Manager V10.10 and associated controller firmware version (07.10) are now available for the DS4800 Midrange Disk System and DS4700 Express Models, and include the following enhancements:
- RAID 6 support on the DS4700 Express Models
- Read with parity check
- Support for greater than 2 TB volumes on selected supported operating systems
- 8 KB cache block size
- Increased number of drives per volume group on RAID 0 and RAID 10
- Proactive drive health monitoring
- Improved VSS provider integration
- Increased number of host logins
Additionally, several new optional features are available with Storage Manager V10.10:
- Upgrade up to 16 FlashCopies per volume on the DS4800
- Upgrade up to 8 FlashCopies per Volume on the DS4700
- Upgrade up to 128 Enhanced Remote Mirror pairs on the DS4800
- Upgrade up to 64 Enhanced Remote Mirror pairs on the DS4700
- Increments of up to 512 storage partitions on the DS4800
- Increments of up to 128 storage partitions on the DS4700
- DS4800 Model 80 Enhanced Performance Activation option

DS4000 Storage Manager software is used to configure and manage the DS4000 series midrange disk systems and is composed of host-based and controller-based software components.
The Storage Manager is used during initial installation and ongoing normal system maintenance to perform such tasks as configuring RAID arrays and logical drives, assigning logical drives to hosts, replacing and rebuilding failed disk drives if required, expanding the size of arrays and logical drives, and converting from one RAID level to another. It is also used to perform management tasks such as checking and monitoring DS4000 controller components, updating the controller firmware, and other DS4000 controller management tasks.
Storage Manager also provides the DS4000 series midrange disk systems with optional, advanced copy service features, including FlashCopy®, VolumeCopy, and Enhanced Remote Mirroring.
DS4000 Storage Manager V10.10 enhancements
Storage Manager V10.10 and its associated controller firmware version (07.10) are available for the DS4800 Midrange Disk System and DS4700 Express Models.
Storage Manager V10.10 includes the following functional enhancements:

RAID 6 support for DS4700
- RAID 6 technology is designed to provide improved data protection against multiple disk drive failures. (Refer to the Limitations section for further details.)
- Read with parity check
- Support for greater than 2 TB volumes on selected operating systems (refer to the Limitations section for further details)
- 8 KB cache block size
- Increased number of drives per volume group on RAID 0 and RAID 10
- Proactive drive health monitoring
- Improved VSS provider integration
- Increased number of host logins
Additionally, Storage Manager V10.10 includes several upgrade enhancements to FlashCopy and Enhanced Remote Mirroring advanced copy service features, as well as additional storage partitioning features.
Upgrade enhancements to the FlashCopy feature
The FlashCopy advanced copy service feature has been enhanced with an upgrade feature to provide an increased number of FlashCopy images per volume on the DS4800 and DS4700.
The FlashCopy feature is designed to provide the ability to perform a point-in-time copy of a logical drive to help support data protection and backup needs.
Either the FlashCopy feature or FlashCopy/VolumeCopy feature is a prerequisite to the installation of the FlashCopy upgrade features.
The following are the new FlashCopy features enabled by Storage Manager V10.10:

DS4800 FlashCopy 4-16 FC Upgrade (#7343)
- Increases the number of FlashCopy images per volume from 4 to 16 on all models of the DS4800

DS4700 FlashCopy 4-8 FC Upgrade (#7313)
- Increases the number of FlashCopy images per volume from 4 to 8 on all models of the DS4700
Upgrade enhancements to the Enhanced Remote Mirroring features
The Enhanced Remote Mirroring features have been enhanced with an upgrade feature that doubles the number of remote mirroring pairs previously available on the DS4700 and DS4800.
The Enhanced Remote Mirroring feature is designed to help maintain data access in the event of a disaster or unrecoverable error on a DS4000 system. It is designed to achieve this by maintaining two copies of a data set in two different locations, on two or more different DS4000 systems, and enabling a second DS4000 system to take over the responsibility.
The base Enhanced Remote Mirroring features are required prior to the installation of the upgrade features.
The following are the new Enhanced Remote Mirroring upgrade features enabled by Storage Manager V10.10:
- DS4800 Enhanced Remote Mirroring 64-128 Mirrors Upgrade (#7346) doubles the number of remote mirrors that can be configured on all models of the DS4800 from 64 to 128 mirrors.
- DS4700 Enhanced Remote Mirroring 32-64 Mirrors Upgrade (#7316) doubles the number of remote mirrors that can be configured on all models of the DS4700 from 32 to 64 mirrors.
Enhancements to storage partitioning features
New storage partitioning features are available that double the number of storage partitions previously available on the DS4700 and DS4800.
The storage partition features add a high level of flexibility to the DS4000 disk system, enabling you to connect multiple and heterogeneous host systems to a DS4000. The storage partition features determine the number of hosts or host clusters that can access storage on a DS4000 disk system. Generally, the greater the number of storage partitions activated on a given DS4000 system, the greater the number of hosts or host clusters that can access DS4000 storage.
