Overview

SAS support for the IBM BladeCenter® JS21 and the IBM BladeCenter H chassis is enabled with the announcement of the IBM BladeCenter SAS Connectivity Module.

BladeCenter customers have the flexibility to choose from a variety of Storage Area Network (SAN) switch vendor's architectures. The BladeCenter SAN switch module portfolio now includes the SAN switch.

Each BladeCenter server provides redundant connections to the network. Customers can configure their IBM BladeCenter JS21 with dual port host bus adapters to help assure that they will always have a connection to their Storage Area Network via the high availability midplane.

Through integration, BladeCenter eliminates the fiber optic cables from the server to the switch. This not only reduces the opportunity for mis-configuration, it helps to lower the expense for cables and to reduce potential points of failure while increasing network availability.

IBM BladeCenter SAS Connectivity Module

The IBM BladeCenter SAS Connectivity Module enables 3 Gb SAS fabric connectivity, and includes the following key features:

  • Standard switch form factor with 14 internal 1X SAS ports and four 4X external SAS ports
  • Uses the Vitesse 7157 ASIC and Vitesse API software interface
  • Switch management via CLI, IBM Storage Configuration Manager, and Web browser
  • SAS zoning v1.1

SAS expansion card for IBM BladeCenter

The SAS Expansion Card enables connectivity to the SAS Connectivity Module by connecting to the PCI-X bus.

Key features are:

  • Uses LSI 1064 ASIC
  • Provides blade with two 1X SAS ports
  • CFFv form factor

CFFv expansion cards fit on the blade server and allow connectivity to both standard and high-speed switch module bays at the same time. These new expansion cards provide new flexibility for connecting the blade server to the standard I/O modules.

Brocade ISL Trunking for IBM BladeCenter and Brocade 4 GB Fabric Watch for IBM BladeCenter provide software keys to enable function for the Brocade 4 GB 20-port SAN Switch Module or Brocade 4 GB 10-port SAN Switch Module.

Description

IBM BladeCenter SAS Connectivity Module

The SAS Connectivity Module can be placed in the BladeCenter H (7989-BCH) switch bays 3 and 4.

The SAS 4-Channel Cable for IBM BladeCenter connects the SAS Connectivity Module to external SAN's.

SAS Expansion Card (CFFv) for IBM BladeCenter

The SAS Expansion Card (CFFv) for the IBM BladeCenter JS21 (7988-J21) is a combination form factor for vertical/standard I/O connection (CFFv). It can be combined with a CFFh I/O card on the same JS21 and a PCI slot on the JS21, and provides the interface to the SAS Connectivity Module in the BladeCenter H chassis.

Security, auditability, and control

Security and auditability features include:

  • A power-on password function, providing control of who has access to the data and server setup program on the server
  • A selectable boot sequence, which can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive

Limitations: The BladeCenter® and JS21 blade have no security-intrusion detection; therefore, they should be installed in a rack environment that provides security through lockable doors or other security measures. It is a customer's responsibility to ensure that the server is secure to protect sensitive data.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
