Overview

Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel Expansion Card (CFFv) for BladeCenter® (43W6859)

The Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel Expansion Card (CFFv) for BladeCenter is an addition to the family of IBM BladeCenter expansion cards, which due to its smaller form factor, provides sufficient space to enable connectivity with both Legacy and High Speed switch module bays at the same time, on the High Speed Blade when a second expansion card is utilized. This new Emulex expansion card connects to the PCI-X bus, and provides access to the Legacy Switch Modules 3 and 4. As previously mentioned, the small form factor provides sufficient space for adding a second CFFh expansion card for access to the high speed switch modules in bays 7 - 10.

Features and benefits:

  • It integrates the SAN fabric to simplify deployment/management and help reduce infrastructure complexity and total cost of ownership.
  • It provides interoperability with FCSW2-compliant SANs.
  • It leverages the leadership capabilities of our BladeCenter Alliance.
  • BladeCenter leads the industry in delivering integrated fabric switching to the blade server environment. Integrated fabric switching eases deployment, simplifies the data center, reduces cabling and optical transceivers (SFPs), and lowers costs.
  • BladeCenter clients have the flexibility to choose from a variety of SAN switch vendor's architectures. The BladeCenter SAN switch module portfolio now includes QLogic, Brocade, Cisco and McDATA.
  • Each BladeCenter server provides redundant connections to data and storage networks. Clients can configure their blade servers with dual port host bus adapters and be assured that they will always have a connection to their Storage Area Network (SAN) via BladeCenter's high availability midplane.
  • Through integration, BladeCenter eliminates the fiber cables from the server to the switch. This not only reduces the opportunity for misconfiguration, it lowers the expense for cables and optical transceivers (SFPs), and reduces potential points of failure, while increasing network availability.

New 4X Infiniband Pass-thru Module for BladeCenter

The InfiniBand Pass-thru Module provides the option for DDR 4X InfiniBand data connectivity mechanism between the processor blades and the outside environment. The Pass-thru module provides connectivity for 14 blades installed on the BC-H chassis.

Pass-thru module features:

  • Provide a pass-thru for 14 InfiniBand 4X DDR ports
  • External ports: 14 copper InfiniBand 4X connectors
  • Internal ports: 14 InfiniBand 4X ports connected to the mid-plane server blades
  • InfiniBand ports that support hot-pluggable media converter for optic cable
  • Two status LED's: "OK" (Green) & "FAULT" (Yellow)

4X DDR Expansion Cards for BladeCenter

InfiniBand Host Channel Adapter (HCA) cards deliver low-latency and high-bandwidth for performance-driven server and storage clustering applications in Enterprise Data Centers, High-Performance Computing, and Embedded environments. Clustered databases, parallelized applications, transactional services, and high-performance embedded I/O applications will potentially achieve significant performance improvements helping reduce completion time and lower cost per operation. These new HCAs simplify network deployment by consolidating clustering, communications, and management I/O, and helping provide enhanced performance in virtualized server environments.

Key features:

  • 1.2us MPI ping latency
  • Two 4x DDR capable (20 Gb/s) InfiniBand ports; support auto-negotiation to SDR
  • CPU offload of transport operations
  • End-to-end QoS and congestion control
  • Hardware-based I/O virtualization
  • TCP/UDP/IP stateless offload
  • Based on Mellanox's new ConnectX Infiniband to PCI-express bridge chip
  • Supports the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) drivers and protocol support
  • Support for CISCO's and Voltaire's drivers stacks

Additional options

  • InfiniBand 3m DDR Cable (43W6742)
  • InfiniBand 8m DDR Cable (43W6743)

Help and service information — Features and options

During the warranty period, support for a warranty related issue can be obtained by accessing IBM's on-line services (requires internet access account, not included), or by calling the IBM Support Center at 800-426-7378, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to answer any questions regarding your new IBM option. Response time will vary depending on the number and nature of calls received. If you need warranty service, return or exchange is available. In addition, if your IBM option is installed in an IBM computer, you may be entitled to service at your location. For general questions related to the use of your options, fee-based support is available. Your technical support representative can help you determine the best alternative.

Accessing IBM on-line services

International Warranty Service (IWS)

IWS is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type.

You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service.

To determine the eligibility of your computer and to view a list of countries where service is available, visit

Note: Due to the earth's magnetic field, CRT monitors are manufactured to work in northern, southern, and equatorial regions of the earth and may not produce a satisfactory image when moved between them. Any required adjustment (if possible) is not covered under IWS and may be subject to a chargeable action. The magnetic field does not affect flat-panel LCD monitors.
