Overview
Bottom rule

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 software introduces support for the CIFS backup interface. ProtecTIER V3.2 supports replication between a maximum of eight ProtecTIER CIFS systems. Any one ProtecTIER CIFS system is limited to a maximum of three target systems within the replication grid per replication policy.

ProtecTIER V3.2 continues support for the Symantec NetBackup OpenStorage API announced with ProtecTIER V2.5, and for the Virtual Tape Library (VTL) interface that has been the foundation of the ProtecTIER offerings. Supported replication grid configurations for ProtecTIER OST and ProtecTIER VTL systems are unchanged with ProtecTIER V3.2.

Other enhancements included in ProtecTIER V3.2 are designed to provide Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) alerting improvements, and enhancements to the security interface for the ProtecTIER Manager GUI. When combined with the TS7620 ProtecTIER Express® Model SM2 appliance, ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 delivers twice the storage capacity of the TS7610 Model SM1.

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 is the follow-on to ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.1.

Description
Bottom rule

ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 introduces FSI-CIFS support for Microsoft™ Windows-based network attached storage (NAS) backup environments. The ProtecTIER FSI interface is intended to be used for backup and restore of data sets using a backup application. Use of the ProtecTIER FSI interface for primary storage is not supported at this time. The ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 FSI-CIFS support requires the TS7620 Appliance Express model SM2.

ProtecTIER Entry Edition V3.2 systems may be configured as a VTL system, an OpenStorage interface system, or a FSI system. At this time, a ProtecTIER system may only be configured as one of these types of systems. You may not configure two or three of these system types on a single ProtecTIER system instance. ProtecTIER Entry Edition support for functionality related to the VTL interface and the OST interface is not changed with V3.2.

ProtecTIER Replication for FSI systems is supported between up to eight ProtecTIER FSI systems. However, any single replication policy for a ProtecTIER FSI system may only replicate to a maximum of three other ProtecTIER FSI systems within the replication topology.

An Entry Edition FSI system will support attachment to a maximum of four file backup file systems, and a maximum of 64 CIFS Shares.

When installed on the TS7620 Appliance Express model SM2, ProtecTIER Entry Edition supports two different capacity points. TS7620 Capacity 1 provides a repository with approximately 6 TB of usable capacity. TS7620 Capacity 2 provides a repository with approximately 12 TB of usable capacity. These capacity points are supported for each system interface type, VTL, OST, and FSI, and for the optional features for TS7620 Replication. Trade-ups are supported from TS7620 Capacity 1 to TS7620 Capacity 2. The system interface type may not be changed during a trade-up.

The ProtecTIER Entry Edition capacity points for the TS7610 Appliance Express model SM1 are unchanged from V3.1.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
