IBM® System Storage® SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Version 6.4 can help:
- When storage requirements growing at a fast rate
- When the costs necessary to manage storage requirements are taking over the IT budget
IBM System Storage SVC offers a solution to these problems by supporting a more flexible, responsive, and efficient storage environment. IBM System Storage SVC is designed to deliver the benefits of storage virtualization in environments from large enterprises to small businesses and mid-sized companies.
|
|
| Overview |
IBM SAN Volume Controller is designed to improve storage efficiency by compressing data by as much as 80% through embedded real-time compression for block storage, enabling up to five times as much data to be stored in the same physical disk space. Unlike other approaches to compression, IBM Real-time Compression is designed to be used with active primary data such as production databases and email systems, dramatically expanding the range of candidate data that can benefit from compression. IBM Real-time Compression operates as data is written to disk avoiding the need to store uncompressed data while awaiting compression.
Data mobility has been enhanced with greater flexibility for nondisruptive volume moves. Previous versions of SAN Volume Controller provided the ability to move volumes nondisruptively between the nodes in an I/O group. SAN Volume Controller now supports moving volumes anywhere within a clustered system while avoiding disruption of host access to storage.
SAN Volume Controller systems with 10 Gbps Ethernet ports now support attachment to next-generation Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) networks using Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). This support enables connecting SAN Volume Controller to servers for host attachment and to other SAN Volume Controller systems for clustering or for mirroring using Fibre Channel or FCoE interfaces using these networks. The same ports may also be used for iSCSI server connections.

| Description |
IBM System Storage SVC V6.4 highlights include support for real-time compression of data, nondisruptive volume moves across I/O groups within a clustered system, and FCoE connectivity on existing 10 Gb Ethernet hardware. The following functions, features, and support options help increase the benefits of the SAN Volume Controller.
Real-time compression
IBM SAN Volume Controller is designed to improve storage efficiency by supporting real-time compression for block storage which is designed to improve efficiency by compressing data by as much as 80%, enabling storage for up to five times as much data in the same physical disk space.
To authorize use of this function, the user licenses the SVC Real-time Compression Software, 5641-CP1. The license entitles users for the quantity of terabytes of SVC volumes created with real-time compression enabled. The volume size (and not necessarily the amount of data you are able to store on that volume compressed) is the measure used to determine how many terabytes of 5641-CP1 to license. Unlike SVC standard (5639-VC6), the pricing per terabyte is flat for any quantity of terabytes and not tiered. This provides simplicity for licensing real-time compression at a sub-capacity level of the entire SVC storage management configuration.
For example, you create 20 volumes with real-time compression turned on, each with a volume size of 0.5 terabytes for a total of 10 terabytes. Even though enabling compression will allow 20 or more terabytes of data to be stored across these 20 volumes, the quantity of terabytes requiring entitlement is 10 terabytes (the sum of the volume sizes). The 5641-CP1 license is not licensed to a specific SVC hardware devices, but is licensed to the customer within a country, in the same way that SVC standard (5639-VC6) and SVC for XIV® (5639-SX1) are licensed today.
Nondisruptive volume moves across clustered systems
Data mobility has been enhanced with greater flexibility for nondisruptive volume moves. Previous versions of SVC provided the ability to move volumes nondisruptively between the nodes in an I/O group and now supports moving volumes anywhere within a clustered system without disruption of host access to storage.
FCoE on current 10 GbE hardware
SAN Volume Controller systems with 10Gbps Ethernet ports now support attachment to next-generation CEE networks using FCoE. This support enables SVC connections to servers for host attachment and to other SAN Volume Controller systems for clustering or for mirroring using Fibre Channel or FCoE interfaces using these networks. The same ports may also be used for iSCSI server connections.
Real-time Compression allowance
IBM authorizes existing Storwize® V7000 and SVC customers to evaluate the new Real-time Compression capability at no cost. Customers who wish to take advantage of this opportunity are encouraged to download the SVC version 6.4 software and enable the Real-time Compression function to help evaluate the potential benefits they can obtain based on their own specific environment and application workloads. The evaluation period is for up to forty-five days and it begins when customers enable the compression function. At the end of the evaluation period, customers must either purchase the required licenses for Real-time Compression or disable the function. If, during the course of the evaluation an issue arises, IBM recommends contacting their local technical sales specialist for assistance.
Customers taking advantage of this opportunity must work with their local IBM Business Partner or their IBM sales representative through the evaluation process to ensure the version 6.4 software is downloaded from a designated IBM site, the evaluation period allowance is maintained, and to resolve any issues or questions related to the use of the compression capabilities. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that they are properly licensed for the Real-time Compression function should they choose to use it after the evaluation period is over.

| Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
