CICS TG
for Multiplatforms V7.2
CICS TG
for Multiplatforms, a market-leading enterprise connector, is production proven
for many thousands of customers as a high-performing, security-rich, and scalable
method of service oriented architecture (SOA) access to CICS, providing
the following features:
- Delivers J2EE standards-based access to CICS applications, while requiring minimal
changes to CICS and
usually no changes to existing CICS applications
- Provides quick and easy connector access to CICS applications from a wide variety of
environments, including Java, C, Microsoft .NET and COBOL runtimes
- Enables the rapid deployment of CICS applications as services in an enterprise-wide
SOA
- Allows the reuse of existing CICS applications as services in comprehensive
and sophisticated J2EE and Web services solutions hosted on powerful application
servers such as WebSphere Application
Server
- Allows CICS applications
to be rapidly service-enabled by connecting them to new environments such
as the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), the heart of an SOA
The strategic interface within CICS TG for Multiplatforms that enables
J2EE connectivity is the J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA), a core component
of J2EE that defines a programming standard to all Enterprise Information
Systems (EISs). JCA is now a popular method of connectivity because of its
ease of implementation and high qualities of service. Using Java Servlets
or Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) components, the External Call Interface
(ECI) can be utilized to allow access to CICS COMMAREA or container based applications.
A choice of TCP/IP or SSL connectivity options is supported.
Enhancements in CICS TG for Multiplatforms V7.2
CICS TG
for Multiplatforms V7.2 provides significant enhancements over previous releases
in the area of remote connectivity.
New remote connectivity
A new type of remote client support is now available using the capabilities
of the Gateway daemon. A set of C runtime libraries and language bindings
are provided, enabling lightweight client support for ECI requests from remote
client environments providing access to CICS COMMAREA based applications. This
support provides for potential usage in a wide variety of client runtime environments
including C++, COBOL and, Microsoft .NET. Integration with the
existing Gateway functionality provides support for one-phase commit transactions
password authentication and request timeout. A redistributable multi-platform
package for client application development and runtime support is provided.
In addition, J2EE application server support is extended, including support
for the CICS JCA
1.5 resource adapters in both WebSphere Application Server V7.0
and BEA WebLogic Server V9 environments.
Other capabilities
Several new systems management functions have been provided including:
- Requests from remote clients using the statistics API are now supported
providing support for multi-stack TCP/IP systems and the development of remote
monitoring solutions. A set of C language bindings and multi-platform runtime
libraries are included in the redistributable package for client application
development and runtime support
- A new Java API for systems monitoring is provided, giving
access to the CICS TG
runtime statistics from remote Java clients. This new capability provides
the ability to integrate with the CICS Explorer, a common, intuitive Eclipse
RCP based environment for systems administration
- An enhancement is provided to the request monitoring exit infrastructure
allowing customized commands to be sent to exits. This new capability provides
the ability for dynamic control of customized monitoring solutions
- A new facility for the defaulting of CICS server names in ECI requests supporting
IPIC, TCP/IP and SNA connections to CICS servers
New COBOL copybooks, samples & makefiles are provided for use with
the ECI on AIX,
Linux/Intel, Linux on System
z, Linux on POWER,
HP-UX and Sun Solaris operating systems.
A new install process provides a simplified path for product installation,
with automatic installation of the CICS TG Java Virtual Machine (JVM) environment.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
The following features support use by people with disabilities:
- Operation by keyboard alone
- Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings
- Ability to run with screen readers and screen magnifiers for use by people
with visual impairment
- Communication of all information independently of color
The Information Center is accessible to people with visual, physical, or
hearing impairment. All functions can be performed without the use of a mouse.

To help support an end-to-end On Demand Business environment, CICS TG is a
production-proven, high-performing, security-rich and scalable J2EE connector
that requires minimal changes to CICS systems and usually no changes to
existing CICS applications.
It allows you to rapidly service-enable your CICS applications by connecting them to
new environments, such as the enterprise service bus (ESB) that is at the
heart of your SOA.
To enable comprehensive composite-application-serving infrastructures, CICS TG
provides connectivity from WebSphere SOA foundation servers to CICS TS for z/OS®.
The strategic interface within CICS TG that enables this is the JCA adapter,
a component of the J2EE specification.
JCA is a popular method of J2EE connectivity because of its ease of implementation
and high qualities of service. It delivers managed qualities of service for
connections, transactions and security and is transparent to application developers.
In a managed environment, like that of WebSphere Application Server system
contracts enable these management capabilities. They help to make the JCA
a robust solution for integrating COMMAREA or container-based CICS applications
with J2EE applications running in WebSphere Application Server.
Tightly-coupled connectivity solutions such as JCA, along with other J2EE
standard services such as Java Message Service (JMS) and Java Database
Connectivity (JDBC), can coexist with loosely-coupled Web services to take
advantage of the agility of an SOA
The term tightly-coupled means that there is a predetermined client-server
or consumer-publisher relationship that is not so easy to change. In such
a case you typically have for a given client only one specific server with
technical interaction that is fault-sensitive, meaning that the client has
to handle protocol-related errors. Loosely-coupled systems are often designed
to work on a problem partitioned around data flow boundaries, in which workers
solve only one part of a larger problem, the context of which is not necessarily
known. Often such systems are inherently extensible by means of adding more
workers. The choice among Web services and JCA implementations for integration
is based on multiple criteria. By mapping to the requirements for particular
solutions, and by prioritizing these requirements, architects can choose the
right implementation for their particular case.
Choosing the right deployment platform for your gateway is important. CICS TG
V7.2 currently supports the following platforms:
- z/OS
- AIX
- Linux on Intel, POWER or IBM System
z
- Microsoft Windows
- Sun Solaris on the SPARC platform
- HP-UX on RISC or Itanium platforms
Connectivity is provided on these platforms from all supported WebSphere Application
Server environments to all supported CICS servers. The qualities of service
of CICS TG
are highest when deploying on the z/OS platform.
TXSeries® for
Multiplatforms is a distributed CICS Online Transaction Processing (OLTP)
environment for business-critical applications written in enterprise programming

Compatibility
Named pipe protocol compatibility
For CICS TG
for Multiplatforms V7.2 onwards, in place of the Named Pipe protocol supported
on Windows for
usage with co-located CICS system, the recommended migration path is to move
connections to a TCP/IP based protocol.
EWLM removal
Since the release of CICS Transaction Gateway V7.1 and CICS TS V3.2, Enterprise
Workload Manager (EWLM) V2.1 has been withdrawn by IBM from marketing,
effective March 10, 2008 (refer to Software Withdrawal Announcement ZP07-0510, dated December 4, 2007), and
no follow-on product has been announced to replace EWLM. Therefore, support
for EWLM has been discontinued by CICS TG V7.2. For more details refer to
the following article at
- http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21305697
AutoJavaGateway compatibility
In place of the AutoJavaGateway Java class auto protocol, for CICS TG for Multiplatforms
V7.2 onwards, the recommended approach is to use local, TCP or SSL protocols.
Asynchronous ECI Java APIs
As previously indicated the support for ECI Generic replies for asynchronous
ECI requests, non-validated message qualifiers and non-validated units-of-work
will be withdrawn in the next release of the CICS TG. The recommended approach is to
either migrate applications to use synchronous ECI requests or to disable
generic replies for asynchronous ECI requests and to validate all units of
work and message qualifiers.
Support for Java base classes in J2EE application servers
As previously indicated the CICS TG Java base class APIs (JavaGateway, ECIRequest,
EPIRequest) are no longer supported within the EJB container in WebSphere Application
Server V7. The recommended approach is to move applications to a JCA-based
solution. The base class API is still supported for usage with servlets in
the Web container with the following limitations:
- All ECI requests must be non-transactional. This means that only the field
ECI_NO_EXTEND is supported on the ECIRequest constructor as the Extend_Mode.
- All ECI requests must be synchronous, that is only the fields ECI_SYNC
or ECI_SYNC_TPN are supported as the call types.
- All EPI requests must use the EPI support classes (Terminal, Screen, and
Field)

Processor Value Unit (PVU)
PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements
are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement
(PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level
or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the program
on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity
of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity
licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is
partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must
be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor
cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed
by the program.
Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement
Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's license information to
determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific
to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with

IBM has
transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help
you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled
solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the
service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed
to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate,
but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic
Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services
and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources
for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic
Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server.
It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic,
client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically
reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to
deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and
performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent
is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer
your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic
Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service
for your IBM server.
