IBM® XIV
Storage System Software V10.0 supports a new option in enterprise-class storage
from IBM:
a grid-based array of storage devices with high performance and scalabity.
Within this framework, the following functions can draw on the entire system
capacity:
- Capability for up to 16,000 data snapshots
- Synchronous support for mirroring within the XIV system
- Thin provisioning
- In-band support for data migration
IBM XIV
Storage System Software V10 supports the functions of the IBM XIV Storage
System. It is preloaded on each module within the IBM XIV Storage System 2810-A14. Capacity
usage for each installed module is entitled by the purchase of each XIV Storage
System Software V10 base feature.
Functions supported include:
- Support for 16,000 snapshots utilizing advanced writeable snapshot technology
- Support for synchronous mirroring to another XIV 2810-A14 device
- Support of thin provisioning, providing the ability to provision volumes
that are larger than the physical capacity of the system
- Support for in-band data migration of heterogeneous storage
- Robust user auditing with access control lists
IBM XIV
Storage Manager acts as the management console for the XIV system.
XIV's Storage Manager software is provided at time of installation, or
optionally downloadable from the Internet. For control console server installation
requirements and options, refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections.

IBM XIV
Storage System Software V10.0 requires a co-order of one IBM XIV Storage
System 2810 Model A14, with either a full capacity or a Capacity on Demand
configuration. Refer to the Hardware requirements and Ordering information sections.

The XIV Hardware/Software relationship
The IBM XIV
Storage System Software V10 is preloaded on hardware machine type model 2810-A14.
There is a one-to-one relationship between the base XIV Storage System Software
V10 feature of 5639-XXA and features 1100, 1105, and 1119 on the hardware
(2810-A14).
The IBM XIV
Storage System Software is designed to make the 2810-A14 modules act as a
redundant grid of storage.
There are many advanced functions that are available with the IBM XIV Storage
System Software V10, and all of these functions are available in the base
software.
Data snapshot with advanced writeable snapshot technology
The snapshot capabilities within IBM XIV Storage System Software utilize
a metadata, redirect-on-write design, that allows snapshots to occur in a
subsecond timeframe with very little performance overhead. Up to 16,000 full
or differential copies can be taken. Any of the snapshots can be made writeable,
and then snapshots can be taken of the newly writeable snapshots. Volumes
can even be restored from these writeable snapshots.
Synchronous mirroring within the XIV System
Synchronous mirroring can be performed over FC or iSCSI connections. ISCSI
volumes can be mirrored over FC, and vice versa. It is also possible to test
your secondary mirror site without stopping the mirroring.
Thin provisioning
IBM XIV
Storage System thin provisioning allows administrators to define logical volume
sizes that are larger than the physical capacity of the system. Unlike other
approaches, the physical capacity only needs to be larger than the actual
written data, not larger than the logical volumes. Physical capacity needs
to be increased only when actual written data increases.
In-band data migration
IBM XIV
Storage System Software is also capable of acting as a host, gaining access
to volumes on a legacy system. The machine is then configured as a proxy
to answer requests between existing hosts and legacy storage while migrating
all legacy data in the background
For available XIV Storage System connectivity, capacity, and data protection
features, refer to Hardware Announcement ZG08-0581, dated August 12, 2008.

IBM XIV
Storage System Software is the disk system operating software for the IBM XIV
Storage System (2810-A14). This software provides the functional capabilities
of the XIV system. The combination of hardware and software is designed to
provide a revolutionary, grid-based architecture that is exceptionally easy
to use, with high performance. This offers a scalable, reliable enterprise
disk system for UNIX®, Linux®, Microsoft® Windows®, and other supported distributed
open server platforms. It can provide a platform to address the need for
minimizing complexity while keeping pace with midsize to high-end disk capacity
demands. This system is a great addition to the IBM disk storage family core products in
the IBM information
infrastructure. It is a good fit for clients who want to be able to grow capacity
without managing multiple tiers of storage to improve performance and reduce
cost. These clients may also want to improve their backup capabilities, as
well as reduce the task load on storage administrators. The XIV system is
especially well suited as a consolidated utility storage for fast growing,
dynamic mixed and emerging workloads.
IBM intends
to provide best practice configuration guidance, change management, asset
awareness, capacity utilization, performance trending, and operational reporting
capabilities via IBM TotalStorage® Productivity Center software support
for the IBM XIV
Storage System.
In addition, IBM intends
to provide single sign-on capabilities for many IBM devices, including the IBM XIV Storage
System, and storage software applications that enable the administrator to
use a single set of secure credentials to authenticate across all products
via a single centralized point-of-control.
IBM plans,
during the second half of 2008, to add support for XIV Storage System as a
disk system managed by IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller. This
additional support will provide connectivity for XIV systems to the very broad
range of operating system environments supported by SVC.
All statements regarding IBM's future direction and intent are subject
to change or withdrawal without notice and represent goals and objectives
only.
This statement of direction is based on Tivoli's current development plans,
and is subject to change without prior notice.

IBM has
transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help
you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled
solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the
service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed
to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate,
but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic
Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services
and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources
for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic
Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server.
It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic,
client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically
reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to
deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and
performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent
is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer
your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic
Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service
for your IBM server.
