The IBM POWER6 processor-based System p 570 is expanded with new features
and function:
Redundant Service Processor function for managing the service
processors when one fails is now supported on all p570 systems that
are operating with system firmware level FM320_xxx_xxx, or later.
This support is available for p570 configurations with two or more
CEC enclosures. Redundant Service Processor function requires that
the Hardware Management Console (HMC)
be attached to the Service Interface Card in both CEC enclosure
1 and CEC enclosure 2. The Service Interface Card in these two
enclosures must be connected using an external Power Control cable
(#6006 or similar).
The adapters that are used in the GX expansion slots are now concurrently
maintainable on systems with firmware level FM320_xxx_xxx, or later.
If the GX adapter were to fail, the card could be replaced with a
working card without powering down the system.
Two new features support external control of the internal SAS disk
drives. A hardware feature (#3650) that occupies PCIe slot P1-C3
provides a Mini SAS 4x connector on the rear bulkhead and allows three
of the six internal SAS disk drives to be controlled by an external SAS
Controller adapter, or a second feature 3651 allows all six drives to
be controlled by an external SAS adapter. The SAS controller adapter
(#5900, purchased separately) must be installed in the same MMA host
system as the internal drives, in one of the two available
PCI-X expansion slots.
A PCI-X SAS Controller (#5900) enables external SAS devices to be
attached to the p570.
A PCIe 4-port 1 Gb Ethernet adapter (#5717) supports higher Ethernet
density on the p570. This adapter can be configured for 10/100/1000 Mb
operation in full duplex mode.
Three new cable features (#1828, #1841, and #1842) allow the GX Dual-Port,
12-Channel Attach adapter (#1802) to be used to attach the system to 4X
channel Infiniband switches.
The 1 Gb Internet SCSI (iSCSI) TCP Off-Load Engine (TOE) PCI-X on
Copper Media Adapter (#5713) encapsulates SCSI commands and data into
TCP and transports them over the Ethernet network via IP. The receiving
side disassembles the encapsulated SCSI command and data into SCSI to
communicate with the target storage devices. The adapter uses an RJ45
style connector. This feature that has been identified on the p570 as
"must remove" is now changed to "available" for both Initial and MES
orders.
The 1 Gb iSCSI TCP TOE PCI-X on Fiber Media Adapter (#5714)
encapsulates SCSI commands and data into TCP and transports them over
the Ethernet network via IP. The receiving side disassembles the
encapsulated SCSI command and data into SCSI to communicate with the
target storage devices. The adapter uses the small form factor LC type
fiber optic connector. This feature that has been identified on the
p570 as "must remove" is now changed to "available" for both Initial
and MES orders.
IBM is committed to providing its clients flexibility in selecting
a Linux operating system for use with System p servers. Based on this
commitment, IBM is announcing support for Red Hat(R) Enterprise Linux
for POWER Version 5 Update 1 (RHEL 5.1),
the newest version of the Red Hat operating system on the p570 (9117-MMA).
Update 1 is the minimum version of RHEL 5 supported on the p570 server,
fulfilling the Statement of Direction issued in
Hardware Announcement ZG070384
dated May 22, 2007.
Refer to
Software Announcement ZP070286
dated June 12, 2007,
for details on RHEL 4 and RHEL 5 support with System p servers.
Clients can now choose from Red Hat Enterprise Linux for POWER
Version 4 Update 5, or later, Version 5 Update 1, or later, and SUSE(R)
Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1 (SLES 10 SP1) , or later, for use
with the powerful System p 570 server.
Power Trending/Power Saver
Continuous power usage data can be collected on System p 570 systems via an
Intelligent Power Distribution Unit (iPDU) that is now offered as a feature
for the 19" Racks (FC #5889/7109).
The power usage data can be displayed from the IBM Systems Director Active
Energy Manager. Data
administrators can use the information to monitor the power consumption of the
data center at various times
of the day, week, or month and use that information to identify anomalies and
manage loads when electrical
demands or costs are high.
Power Saver mode helps provide a way to reduce energy consumption of selected
IBM System p 570
configurations. Using the Active Energy Manager, Power Saver mode can be
enabled/disabled
automatically based on time of day or processor utilization. Scheduling Power
Saver mode for high
energy usage times can reduce peak energy consumption and help lower the cost
of energy used.
Enabling Power Saver mode during low processor utilization periods, such as
nights and weekends,
can reduce overall energy consumption without impacting business operations.
Upgrades from System p5 570 to System p 570
The upgrade processor feature 5621 will only be available for ordering
when the initial MES upgrade order is placed. The minimum supported
upgrade is to a 4-core system when upgrading to the POWER6 processor
feature 5621. If the POWER5+ system being upgraded has only two processor
cores, an additional processor feature must be purchased to fill both
processor sockets in the primary enclosure. A p570 with POWER6
processor feature 5621 can be expanded by purchasing additional
enclosures with POWER6 processor feature 5622.
Processor features 5621 and 5622
cannot be mixed within the same CEC enclosure but can be mixed in the same
system. The 5622 processor card accepts only POWER6 memory and has 12
DIMM slots.
p570 memory upgrade
Some memory DIMMs used in the POWER5+ (p5-570) memory subsystem may have
incompatibility issues when used in a POWER6 (p570) memory subsystem.
IBM will replace these DIMMs when a system is upgraded from POWER5+
processors to POWER6 processor feature number 5621. If IBM determines
some of the DIMMs need to be replaced, IBM will exchange those DIMMs at
no additional charge for systems being upgraded to POWER6 processor
feature 5621. When you are ready to place an order to upgrade your POWER5+
processor-based system to a POWER6 processor-based system with processor
feature 5621, contact your local IBM Service office and request a
service call for ECA840 on your POWER5+ system. IBM Service will assist
you in obtaining a snap file from your system and in submitting the snap
file to IBM for analysis. This action is required to allow your upgrade
order to POWER6 processor feature 5621 to be scheduled for shipment from
IBM. If you are upgrading your POWER5+ system to processor feature
5622, your memory does not migrate and ECA840 is not required.

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support
services to help you achieve higher system availability.
Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive,
no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available
for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the
opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises
two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news
page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM
Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier
access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that
resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system
inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable.
The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to
IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver
proactive service that may result in higher system availability and
performance. In addition, information collected through the Service
Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when
they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation
and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables
IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
