Overview
Bottom rule

IBM System Storage DS3500 Express Storage Systems now offer a dual-port 10Gb iSCSI host interface card (feature number 3613, part number / SEO 81Y9613). iSCSI allows you to capitalize on existing IT skills and infrastructure by delivering block-based storage across the IP network to iSCSI (Ethernet) servers. With support for 10Gb and 1Gb iSCSI, this new feature helps extend the business value of existing 1Gb infrastructures while exploiting the economics of lower cost and increased performance offered by next-generation, 10Gb iSCSI technology.

The DS3500 delivers increased scalability and interoperability with the following features:

  • A 1 TB 7,200 rpm 2.5-inch 6Gb SAS nearline (NL) disk drive (feature number 5270, part number / SEO 81Y9872). This is dual-port, hot-swappable drive. It offers a higher-capacity option for cost-oriented environments and increases the physical capacity supported in DS3524 and EXP3524 systems.
  • A drive expansion feature (feature number 4390, part number / SEO 81Y9620) for support of up to 192 drives within a DS3500 system. This doubles the number of drives supported in a DS3500 system, and addresses capacity demands by adding more EXP3500 expansion units to the existing DS3500 system. Additionally, the DS3500 now also supports up to 512 volumes per system.
  • Support for up to 128 storage partitions, doubling the number of storage partitions supported by the DS3500. Additionally, up to 256 volumes are now supported per storage partition.
  • Support for up to 16 remote mirrors per system (feature number 4451, part number / SEO 81Y9622), doubling the number of mirrors supported in the D35000.
  • Currently available FlashCopy and Volume Copy features support up to 256 Flash Copy relationships and up to 256 Volume Copy relationships per system.
  • Support for switched configurations in an SAS environment when attached to IBM System x®, Intel®, and AMD-processor based servers. This increases the number of servers that can be attached to the DS3500 through the use of an external SAS switch. Previously, only direct attach configurations were supported.
  • DS3524 DC support for selected Linux® operating systems running on selected IBM Power® System servers and blades, and selected HP-UX operating systems running on selected HP Itanium® and PA-RISC servers.

10Gb iSCSI Host Interface Card

The 10Gb iSCSI Host Interface Card (feature number 3613, part number / SEO 81Y9613) provides one host attachment daughter card with two 10Gb iSCSI ports. When used on a DS3500 dual controller system, this feature must be ordered for and installed on both controllers (the feature quantity must be two).

The card can be configured to run at either a 1Gb or 10Gb link speed. Both ports on a card will run at the same link speed. When installed on a DS3500 dual controller system, both cards must be configured to run at the same link speed.

The 10Gb iSCSI card requires the use of an external switch and the DS3500 iSCSI host ports cannot be directly attached to server ports. If DS3500 iSCSI ports are configured to run at a 1Gb link speed, a 1Gb external switch must be used. If the DS3500 iSCSI ports are configured to run at a 10Gb link speed, a 10Gb external switch must be used.

Host attachment cables are required to connect the DS3500 iSCSI host ports to switch ports. The DS3500 requires a 10GBASE-T (twisted pair copper) cable terminated with a 8P8C modular connector (RJ45 compatible connector):

  • Category 7
  • Category 6A (shielded or unshielded)
  • Category 6 (shielded or unshielded)

Refer to the DS3500 Sales Manual for supported cable lengths

http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/index.wss

Refer to the IBM System Storage Interoperation Center (SSIC) for a comprehensive list of supported environments, devices, and configurations

http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/config/ssic

When using SSIC, select the following search criterion to view the interoperability support for this announcement:

  • Product Family: IBM System Storage Entry Disk
  • Product Model: DS3500
  • Product Version: DS3500 (07.77)

SSIC will be updated with information for controller firmware 07.77 on or prior to the planned availability date.

16 Remote Mirrors per System

Remote Mirror Upgrade (feature number 4451, part number / SEO 81Y9622) provides an activation key to enable to Remote Mirror function with support for 16 mirror pairs per system. This feature is required for both the primary and remote machine.

Remote Mirroring Base (feature number 4450, part number / SEO 68Y8455) is a required prerequisite for both the primary and remote machine.

256 Volumes per Storage Partition and 512 Volumes per System

When controller firmware level 07.77 (or later) is installed on a DS3500, the system will allow the configuration of up to 256 volumes per storage partition and up to 512 volumes per system. This functional enhancement does not require the acquisition of new feature codes and is enabled through the installation of controller firmware level 07.77 (or later).

Note: The total volumes per system cannot exceed 512 volumes. For example, you cannot configure 256 volumes within three separate storage partitions, since that total of 768 volumes would exceed the 512 volumes per system maximum.

FlashCopy and Volume Copy

When controller firmware level 07.77 (or later) is installed on a DS3500, the number of supported relationships per system is increased on the following:

  • FlashCopy: Base (feature number 4420, part number / SEO 68Y8451)
    • 256 FlashCopy relationships per system
  • FlashCopy: Upgrade (feature number 4421, part number / SEO 68Y8452)
    • 256 FlashCopy relationships per system
  • Volume Copy: Base (feature number 4430, part number / SEO 68Y8453)
    • 256 Volume Copy relationships per system
  • FlashCopy Base / Volume Copy Base (feature number 4440, part number / SEO 68Y8454)
    • 256 FlashCopy relationships per system
    • 256 Volume Copy relationships per system

For DS3500 systems that already have these FlashCopy or Volume Copy features, these functional enhancements can be enabled through the installation of controller firmware level 07.77 (or later).

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
