IBM® Information Archive is a next generation information retention solution designed as an archiving repository for structured or unstructured content to help address complete information retention needs.

IBM Information Archive is designed to archive and retrieve documents through a wide range of software applications using an industry standard interface, such as Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS), or via IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager, making IBM Information Archive the most flexible archiving and retention solution available.

Overview
Bottom rule

IBM Information Archive is designed to archive and retain records in non-erasable, non-rewritable formats. It supports business requirements for retaining and protecting information from premature deletion or malicious modifications. IBM Information Archive is a universal storage repository for all types of archived information to help mid-size and enterprise customers reduce storage costs and improve operational efficiencies within their data center.

IBM Information Archive can help reduce the need for primary storage by enabling archiving applications to move inactive or unnecessary information off the primary storage tier to lower-cost storage tiers. When primary storage tiers have less information, applications can run faster and backup and recovery operations can be completed more quickly. In addition, IBM Information Archive can help reduce business risks by providing a storage repository in which stored information cannot be altered or deleted until the compliance retention period has elapsed. Information Archive features the option to use the retention policies from archiving applications or to assign specific retention policies.

Documents can be archived and retrieved by a wide range of software applications or by using operating system utilities on a NFS or CIFS client system.

IBM Information Archive features new indexing and searching for documents in file archive collections known as Network Attach Storage collections.

Key features include:

  • A Disk Controller (MTM 2231-D3A) and a Disk Expansion Drawer (MTM 2231-D3B)
  • A Server (MTM 2231-S3M)
  • A new Feature Code for installing Index and Search from the Factory (Feature #9453)
  • A new set of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) that use CIFS access method to move information in the appliance
  • Content archiving from many different applications across standard-based interfaces via NFS, CIFS, and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager API to allow immediate archiving
  • Document indexing to provide a means of finding files that are archived in file archive collections
  • Indexed files can be located within a file archive collection by issuing a variety of search queries
    • Various indexing levels are supported including indexing system metadata as well as indexing metadata and text automatically extracted from the file content
    • Queries supported include search by text keyword, search on metadata, and range queries on numerical metadata and date ranges
  • Document ingestion process simplification for file archive collections known as Network Attach Storage collections
  • A simplified installation manual to allow customers achieve a quick time to value via Implementation Services
  • Simple access to help recover archived information, whether from email, files, or other sources

IBM Information Archive (machine type 2231) requires the software entitlement for the IBM Information Archive software (5608-IAF) if the order for the software is placed in the Passport Advantage® ordering system.

IBM Information Archive (machine type 2231) requires the software entitlement for the IBM Information Archive software (5608-W01) if the order for the software is placed in eConfig (AAS).

IBM Information Archive software comes preinstalled on the appliance. Orders for the IBM Information Archive models must be configured using the eConfigurator (ECMSSD) to support accurate and complete order entry.

The IBM Information Archive software PID 5608-IAF can optionally be ordered via Passport Advantage, and starting in Version 2.1 the software PID 5608-W01 can be ordered in the same ordering system as the hardware. If you want to have index and search feature installed from the factory, you must check the Feature Code 9453 on eConfigurator (ECMSSD).

Planning information

Customer responsibilities

The IBM Information Archive machine type (2231) is designated as Customer Engineer (CE) installable. CE setup, operation, and service publications are available.

You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet Web site or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

Cable orders

It is the customer's responsibility to provide the appropriate type, and length, of external cable which needs to be connected between the customer's host or network and the IBM Information Archive node or nodes.

The customer must provide cables to connect the Management Interface Server to the same customer network on which the nodes of the IBM Information Archive is connected. Additionally, the customer must provide the cables to connect the RSM server to the customer network.

Security, auditability, and control

This product uses the security and auditability features of the preloaded application software.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
