Overview
IBM Tape Manager for z/VM provides key functions to manage tape volumes and tape devices on your z/VM systems, including:
- Access control for your tape volumes
- Resource monitoring, alerting you when scratch tapes are getting low
- Retention management for tape volumes
- Data Security Erase support for tapes containing sensitive data
- Management of tape devices, both manual mount and library mounts for volumes located in an Automated Tape Library (ATL) or Virtual Tape Server (VTS)
- Support for dynamically sharing tape devices across z/VM and non-z/VM systems
Tape Manager for z/VM V1.3 offers:
- Enhanced tape management for customers with multiple z/VM systems in one geographic location. By setting up one "catalog node" to manage all of the tape volumes for one physical location, you can create multiple "request nodes" that share the same catalog of tape volumes and tape devices. You no longer need to allocate a specific range of tape volumes to each z/VM system.
- Standardized access control through RACF for z/VM or an External Security Manager (ESM). You can now use RACF or other ESM to control access to pools of tape volumes, supporting central management of system security. For those not using RACF or an ESM, you can continue to use the product-specific access control methods provided in previous releases of Tape Manager.
- Additional hardware support, specifically StorageTek devices.
- Usability enhancements.

Description
New in IBM Tape Manager for z/VM V1.3:
- Enhanced tape management for customers with multiple z/VM systems in one geographic location. Tape Manager V1.3 includes support for multiple z/VM systems to share the same physical tape volumes and devices. One z/VM system acts as the "catalog node", managing the catalog contents for tape volumes, including serial numbers, expiration dates, access control, scratch vs. used status, Data Security Erase (DSE) vs. no DSE, and catalog comments. Additional z/VM systems in the same geographic location can be "request nodes", communicating with the catalog node to fulfill requests such as mounting tapes, adding tape volumes to the catalog, and updating catalog information for a volume. By using one shared catalog, multiple z/VM systems can share tape volumes. Dynamic device sharing continues to be supported as it was in V1.2.
- Standardized access control of tape pools through RACF for z/VM or External Security Manager (ESM).
As you continue to expand your use of z/VM to host Linux® and other guests, centralized security
becomes critical. Tape Manager V1.3 addresses this need through optional
use of RACF or
other ESM to manage access to tape pools. Through RACF or other ESM, individual users or
groups of users can be authorized to specific tape pools. The security management
system provides centralized access control and reports for auditing.
Other system options in Tape Manager can also be controlled through RACF or other ESM, including:
- System Administrator and Operations authority
- Authorization to various Tape Manager commands
- Pool administrator authority for private tape pools
- Access to the system pool of free tapes from private tape pools
Alternatively, you can continue to use the product-specific tape pool access control methods provided in previous releases of Tape Manager.
- Usability enhancements, including:
- Support for continuation characters in configuration files, making them easy to view and edit.
- Expanded text data for tape volumes. The size of the free-form comment text field in the tape catalog for each tape volume has been expanded from 16 to 32 characters. In addition, the content of the field can be searched using Tape Manager query commands.
- The ability to specify Data Security Erase on a specific tape volume when the volume is initially added to the catalog.
- Enhanced management of Tape Manager's configuration information. The main configuration file can now be on any disk accessed by the Tape Manager service machine. This means you can place the configuration file on a disk that Tape Manager accesses read-only, allowing you to modify the configuration file while Tape Manager is running. The configuration file can then be reloaded with a short shutdown and restart of the Tape Manager service machines. In addition, multiple configuration files have been consolidated into the primary configuration file.
- Improved management of scratch tapes with new warning levels for low inventory of each media type.
- Support for StorageTek devices. In addition to the IBM tape devices, Automated Tape Libraries and Virtual Tape Servers, Tape Manager V1.3 supports StorageTek devices supported by Host Software Component V6.1.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at
Engine-based Value Unit pricing
Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Tape Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.
There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Tape Manager for z/VM has already been installed.
Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged,
or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Tape Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support, and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.
Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

IBM Electronic Services
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
