IBM System
Storagetm Virtual File Manager V6 Enterprise Edition and Migration Edition
were announced with an ordering prerequisite of at least one associated IBM N
series host in the installation to use the Virtual File Manager software.
This announcement removes that requirement, making Virtual File Manager V6
available to a wider scope of hosts and their associated Microsoft® Windows-based
file servers.
Previously defined N series per server tier contents are expanded to include
additional host server connections. This affords the ability to manage a wider
scope of associated file servers.
Current Windows cumulative tiers are unaffected.
No new orderable features are added by this announcement, however the tier
contents of the existing seven tiers previously qualified for N series servers
only, have been expanded to include additional host servers.
No current functions of Virtual File Manager (VFM) V6 are affected by this
announcement.
New Web sites are added, with information regarding non-N series Virtual
File Manager configurations.

The ordering information section as revised by this announcement as follows:
Server
A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands,
or applications to one or more user or client devices. A proof of entitlement
(PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor
cores and partitions in the server on which the program runs or for each server
managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is
considered a separate server.
IBM System
Storage N series Virtual File Manager V6.1 can be ordered by both IBM N
series customers and by other customers with supported servers listed in the
per server tier table.
Product order features for VFM V6.1 are unchanged from those originally
announced for VFM V6.0.
IBM System
Storage N series Virtual File Manager V6.1 can be ordered in two editions:
- VFM Enterprise Edition (5639-FE6)
- VFM Migration Edition (5639-FM6)
Both editions include two separate function authorization tiered feature
sets:
- Server tiers: For authorization of one or more per server nodes, blades,
or servers for VFM file management. Different server classes are represented
by different, independent tiers.
- Windows servers:
For authorization of one or more Windows servers for VFM file management,
in cumulative tier levels.
Refer to the following information for correct tier usage.
Order either 1-Year or 3-Year Software Maintenance Registration features
corresponding to each of the product features ordered in every VFM product
order. (Refer to the VFM Software Maintenance section of Ordering information.)
Trade-up features are available to upgrade from the Migration Edition to
the Enterprise Edition. To be eligible to purchase trade-up features to Enterprise
Edition, you must have previously purchased Migration Edition. Trade-up migrations
are initiated under the Enterprise Edition order sequence in the configurator.
The customer is responsible for verifying accuracy of cumulative tier or
other program entitlements, if required for follow on orders placed after
the initial new license order, and for trade-up migration orders. Paid invoice
containing purchased features and dates of purchase acts as PoE for all orders.
Clustered N series server models require quantity 2 authorizations per N series
system, one per server serial number on the system.
Host per Server features
For Host per Server tier features, order a quantity from each tier equal
to the actual total number of N series servers, or other supported servers
defined for that tier, that are configured for VFM host support from that
tier.
Each tier is independent from other tiers.
Order quantities from as many tiers as required to accurately represent
all servers from that tier classification in the installation supported by
this VFM license.
Order quantities from as many tiers as required to accurately represent
all N series and other host head storage servers or blades in the SAN installation
supported by this VFM license.
Note. VFM EE N series Per Server Tier n and VFM ME N series Per
Server Tier n are retained as per Server feature descriptions, however tier
content is expanded, as defined in the following table. VFM use authorizations
for both N series severs and any of the other listed servers in the same tier,
may be ordered using these tier features.

** The tiers are defined for single nodes, blades, and single or clustered
servers. Clustered N series or other server models may require multiple authorizations
per Server tiers. To determine which N series models are clustered (count
as 2 servers), N series customers should visit
- http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/nas
The preceding table applies to both Enterprise Edition and Migration Edition.
For both Enterprise Edition and Migration Edition, each clustered (such
as A20, G20) N series system model in the table requires quantity 2 of the
tiered N series server authorization features, and each non-clustered (such
as A10, G10) model of the same N series system requires only one N series
server authorization per system, regardless of the VFM tier the N series system
occupies in the table above. This statement applies as well to trade-up features
and to Software Maintenance.
For non N series servers, similar per node, per head or per blade requirements
apply, as designated in the table column heads above.
Registration authorization may be required. Select N series Virtual File
Manager under N series Host Based Systems, and navigate to the VFM 6.1 Publication
Matrix to find the N series models to VFM Tiers Reference Table. Or you may
contact your IBM N
series representative.
For tiered server order and configuration information regarding other listed
servers or blades, visit
- http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/storage/network/software/vfm/index.html
or confer with your IBM representative.
Quantity limit for each per server tier is 250. For order of quantities
above 250 from any per server tier, contact your IBM representative.
Windows server
features
The previous content of the first paragraph in this section is replaced
by the following:
Microsoft Windows file
server authorizations from the cumulative tier table orders may be placed
in the same product order as for per Server host/head servers, using the cumulative
tiers defined below. Subsequent orders for additional authorizations must
use the same customer number as was used for the original new license order,
to enable correct order credit for cumulative (Windows server) tiers.
Note: Ordering information below this point is unchanged, except for the
following note (text added). Note: The code image shipped with feature number
5809 may require application of code updates to complete installation at a
current code level. For applicable updates, N series customers should visit
- http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/nas
Search using the applicable 5639-FE6 or 5639-FM6 Product ID. NAS customer
registration may be required for download access.
To obtain download support for code updates,
non-N series customers should contact an IBM support representative at 1-800-IBM-SERV.
This concludes changes by this announcement to Ordering information.
