The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway solution, comprised of IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2.1 software and the IBM System Storage TS7650G De-duplication Server (3958-DD1) hardware, is designed to address the disk-based data protection needs of enterprise data centers.

The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway is a virtual tape library (VTL) that appears to backup applications as one or many automated tape libraries, without changing existing backup policies, practices, or procedures. The backup application accesses virtual tape drives, robotics, and cartridges just as it would in a physical tape library environment.
This solution is designed to support:
- Backup applications designed for use with tape storage
- Use of disk as a backup medium with existing tape backup applications
- LTO-2 and DLT tape emulation
- Scalability up to 1 PB
Typical VTL solutions provide about 2:1 compression of the data backed up. The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway, featuring HyperFactor data de-duplication technology, can provide up to 25:1 or more data reduction, dramatically increasing storage capacity utilization.

The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway with IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2.1 software is designed to be a high-performance, high-capacity open systems data protection solution for large and mid-sized data center environments. The TS7650G solution can aid in data protection by helping deliver a significant increase in operational efficiency, throughput, and data management capabilities via tape virtualization and data reduction, namely:
- Addressing shrinking backup windows with faster backup and recovery
- Reducing costs and increasing storage capacity utilization
- Improving the reliability and quality of backups
The TS7650G solution is a tape virtualization data de-duplication server for open systems attached to SAN environments over Fibre Channel (FC) connection. It can help data centers improve their data protection operations, while reducing the storage required. The TS7650G presents itself to backup applications as a standard tape device, while offering the benefit of disk-based storage for fast backup and restores. The TS7650G features HyperFactor technology, a data de-duplication technology which searches for redundancy in the data while it is backed up. It stores only the unique data, but tracks all references, maintaining the quality of backup data. In addition, with the space saved through elimination of redundant data, organizations can retain more backups "on-line" for a longer period of time, which can help enable them to recover critical data and files more quickly.
The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway server differs from many other open systems virtual tape offerings through its in-line de-duplication performance. Comparable offerings perform the actual de-duplication as a "post-process," which can elongate the backup cycle and increase disk storage requirements (and cost).

Specified operating environment
Hardware requirements
Requires the IBM 3958-DD1 server.
Additional hardware, defined in the announcement for IBM 3958-DD1, is required to complete the TS7650G de-duplication solution.
Management console
IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway must have a console in order to perform system installation and maintenance. One console (monitor, keyboard and mouse) is required for each server. If multiple ProtecTIER servers need to be accessed, they can be connected to a console via a switch box or via a terminal server. You must place the console hardware order separately from the TS7650G solution order.
The console must be capable of operating one of the following operating systems:
- Windows® 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003
- Red Hat Enterprise 3 or later
The console must also have:
- At least 100 MB of available disk space
- At least 256 MB of RAM
The console must have access to the ProtecTIER service nodes @ IP address (port 3501 is open on the firewall)

Software requirements
Operating system prerequisites
The following operating system installation medium must be available:

It is a customer responsibility to have a valid subscription to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform operating system with unlimited sockets for each gateway (3958-DD1) owned. The subscription can be ordered at

You must show to IBM evidence of a valid subscription to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform operating system with unlimited sockets for each gateway. This must be done prior to the installation of the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 program on each gateway. It is recommended that you order the subscription for the same service period (one year or three years) as the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 program.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux must be installed using the kick-start file supplied with the IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway. This kick-start file partitions the boot disk into the necessary partitions.

If this IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway engine is to be accessed via ProtecTIER Manager installed on another computer, network connections must be configured to allow access.
The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway front-end links will be up only after configuring a repository.
File system prerequisites
The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway stores data in Red Hat Global File Systems (GFS). The number and size of the file systems depends on the size and parameters of your configured repository.
Tivoli® Storage Manager and other compatible software offerings can provide storage and tape management software for the TS7650G. Compatibility
The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway with ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 software compatibly emulates, in both standalone and clustered configurations, the Quantum P3000 tape library with IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives or with DLT Tape Drives.

Customer responsibilities
IBM recommends that you allow IBM to install your IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 program and the correct level of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for you. IBM will perform that installation at no additional charge. Please contact your IBM representative to arrange for IBM to perform the installation.

Server
A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A PoE must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores and partitions in the server on which the program runs or for each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.
IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2.1 -- New orders
Orders for the Linux operating system prerequisite
Order and registration of the Red Hat software maintenance license and subscription specified in Software requirements is a customer responsibility. Order directly from the vendor. Confer with your IBM representative if you have any questions regarding the correct specifications for this order.
Single server configurations
Order one ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 use authorization feature for each ProtecTIER TS7650G (IBM 5839-DD1) server configured.
Order basic capacity authorizations corresponding to the total terabytes (TB) managed by each ProtecTIER server.
TB capacity ordering is by cumulative tier. Starting with tier 1 (1-12 TB), order the quantity from each successive tier required to reach the total TB managed by the server, filling each tier in succession.
The tier 6 per TB 251+ feature is limited to a quantity of 250. If the total capacity managed by the ProtecTIER server is 500 TB or less, order the authorizations above 250 TB using the tier 6 per TB 251+ feature, to reach the required total. If the total capacity managed by the server is greater than 500 TB but less than 750 TB on a new order, order the per 250 TB 251+ tier 6 feature, with an additional quantity of per TB 251+ features (up to 250), to meet the required total of managed TB authorizations. For total managed capacity at or above 750 TB and below 1000 TB in a new order, order quantity 2 of the per 250 TB, 251+ feature, to reach the required range before using the tier 6 per TB 251+ features to reach the exact total.
Clustered server orders
Order optional cluster authorization (in addition to capacity authorizations) corresponding to the total storage capacity managed by ProtecTIER clustered servers at the site.
Cluster orders require quantity 2 ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2 (per server) use authorization features for each cluster.
Order basic capacity authorizations for the total storage managed by the cluster (commonly configured for both servers in the cluster).
In addition, order cluster capacity authorizations in the same amount as base capacity authorizations.
Note: Cluster support requires cluster feature enablement on the corresponding 3958-DD1 hardware order. Refer to the hardware announcement listed in the Reference information section.
Capacity upgrade orders
Customer representatives should be prepared to furnish the ProtecTIER server serial or system identification unit (SIU) for the server (or servers in a cluster) being upgraded with additional capacity.
Upgrade orders using cumulative tiers are made starting within the tier representing the current capacity authorized (for capacity with current Software Maintenance).
Once pricing tier 6 has been reached (beyond 250 TB), all subsequent upgrade orders are made from tier 6, so long as Software Maintenance at or above that authorization level is current. Single capacity upgrade orders of less than 250 TB total can be made from tier 6 using the per TB 251+ order feature. For single orders from tier 6 of greater than 250 TB, use a combination of the per 250 TB and per TB tier 6 order features to reach the required total.
Order Software Maintenance registration corresponding to all product features and quantities ordered, for both new and capacity upgrade orders. Refer to the Software Maintenance section.

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for maintenance and does not require customer signatures.

Limited warranty
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Money-back guarantee
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at
