Overview
IBM Entity Analytic Solutions (EAS) is unique identity disambiguation software that provides public sector organizations or commercial enterprises with the ability to recognize and mitigate the incidence of fraud, threat and risk. This IBM EAS offering provides insight on demand, and in context, on "who is who," "who knows who," and "anonymously."
This industry-leading, patented technology enables enterprise-wide identity insight, full attribution and self-correction in real time, and scales to process hundreds of millions of entities -- all while accumulating context about those identities. It is the only software in the market that provides in-context information regarding non-obvious and obvious relationships that may exist between identities and can do it anonymously to enhance privacy of information.
For most businesses and government agencies, it is important to figure out when a person is using more than one identity Package (that is, name, address, phone number, social insurance number and other such personal attributes) intentionally or unintentionally. Identity resolution software can help determine when two or more different looking identity packages are describing the same person, even if the data is inconsistent. For example, by comparing names, addresses, phone numbers, social insurance numbers and other personal information across different records, this software might reveal that three customers calling themselves Tom R., Thomas Rogers, and T. Rogers are really just the same person.
It may also be useful for organizations to know with whom such a person associates. Relationship resolution software can process resolved identity data to find out whether people have worked for some of the same companies, for example. This would be useful to an organization that tracks down terrorists, but it can also help businesses such as banks, for example, to see whether the Hope Smith who just applied for a loan is related to Rock Smith, the account holder with a sterling credit rating.
Sometimes organizations want to share information across nontraditional boundaries -- such as between a business and a government agency -- and that poses serious privacy challenges. IBM Anonymous Resolution allows you to "disguise" sensitive data before you share it with others for purposes of identity resolution and relationship detection.
This technology makes it easy for businesses and governments to gain a lot of insight from their records while reducing the risk that criminals will steal and misuse information about innocent people.
Resolving identities and their relationships is serious business. It can help reduce fraud or prevent crimes ranging from unwarranted insurance claims; credit card fraud and identity theft, to terrorist activity.
Note: Because the IBM Entity Analytic Solutions product family supports a complete range of databases, including IBM DB2, Oracle, and Microsoft, IBM is changing our product names to reflect our support of multiple environments. Therefore, the IBM Entity Analytic Solutions family -- including IBM Identity Resolution, IBM Relationship Resolution and IBM Anonymous Resolution product names -- supersede the previous product names of IBM DB2 Entity Analytic Solutions, IBM DB2 Identity Resolution, IBM DB2 Relationship Resolution and IBM DB2 Anonymous Resolution.

Entity Analytic Solutions is a suite of four enabling technologies:
- Identity Resolution - answers the question: who is who? In other words it provides the ability to identify who people organizations or things are.
- Relationship Resolution - answers the question: who knows whom? In other words, what relationships exist between people organizations or things.
- Anonymous Resolution - the ability to share this information with third parties without disclosing the identity of the person (or organization) to whom the information relates, thereby avoiding contravention of data protection and other similar laws.
- Global Name Recognition - answers the question: what's in a name? In other words it recognizes customers, citizens, criminals, across multiple cultural variations of name data.
Entity Analytics (EAS) is the world's leading solution for identity
and relationship resolution. EAS provides real time insight into the
identities and relationships of all the involved customers,
suppliers, employees that are part of your critical business
processes and operating environment. Thus EAS speeds and improves the
accuracy of business decisions by delivering resolved identity and
relationship information when and where it is needed regardless of
where the data was extracted from or originated. EAS supports open
industry standards such as XML allowing an enterprise to deploy EAS
capabilities.
Key prerequisites
Entity Analytic Solutions
- Platforms: Windows 2000/2003, SUSE LINUX, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, A/IX, HP UX
Description
EAS provides real-time insight into the identities and relationships of all the involved customers, suppliers and employees who are part of your critical business processes and operating environment. Thus EAS speeds and improves the accuracy of business decisions by delivering resolved identity and relationship information when and where it is needed, regardless of where the data was extracted from or originated. EAS supports open industry standards such as XML, allowing an enterprise to deploy EAS capabilities.
Entity Analytic Solutions has the following unique and market leading capabilities:
- Full attribution resolution - Identity Resolution retains all relevant records it accumulates a history as opposed to a snapshot of each individual or company in this database over time. This means that the resolution process itself becomes more accurate, because there is more data with which to make comparisons.
- Multiple views - all records are retained separately in Identity Resolution so that it supports multiple views of an individual rather than the conventional single view. EAS supports every version of the truth about individual identities.
- Real time changes - whenever a record is received Identity Resolution immediately compares it with its database to see if it (a) resolves an existing record, (b) is new and requires the creation of a new record (automatically) or (c) requires an un-resolve of an existing record in which case, two new virtual consolidations will be created automatically.
- Sequence neutral - it doesn't matter in what order records are presented to Identity Resolution, you always obtain the same results. This is not guaranteed to be the case when you are using traditional methods where you match against a consolidated record rather than its originating elements, which can result in a different resolution.
- Analysis of any attribute - in Identity Resolution every attribute of an entity is indexed, whereas this is not normally the case when using traditional methods. This means that you can search the database by phone number, for example; or by address; or by anything else that distinguishes the records under examination.
- Self healing / self correcting - with Entity Analytic Solutions (EAS), data never has to be reloaded, never refreshed. EAS works in real-time, not in batch mode, where identity information can go stale. Identity information is perpetually updated, with each transaction and update made instantaneously.
- Relationship resolution - It does this by comparing addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and any other characteristics it can discover across multiple individuals. Because Identity Resolution leverages every identity attribute it provides Relationship Resolution with multiple linkage points from which it can make connections or discover linkages between unique identities.
- Degrees of separation - this optional feature of Relationship Resolution provides the user with the ability to extend the recognition of un-declared affinity groups and networks of identities across customers, employees, suppliers, other involved people and so forth, by evaluating relationships (the sensitivity is user-definable) well beyond a single degree and up to thirty (30) degrees of separation.
- Global name recognition - EAS provides the ability to recognize accurately and manage the building blocks of an individual's name and can provide the key to recognize identity across cultures, genders and meanings. This allows your organization to see beyond: name order, multiple titles, cultural variations, multiple prefixes, transposition errors and nicknames.
- Information sharing - the sharing of personal data in a secure way is of particular use in situations where the data being shared is highly sensitive. With anonymous resolution this can be done and information shared without providing any access to information that is not intended to be shared.
- Enterprise discovery - EAS provides insight at ingestion of data streams for real time discovery. New observations are reconciled and related to historical data. Context and discovery accumulate incrementally in real-time. Insight is pushed to users. Users do not have to pose smart questions to obtain valuable insight into identities and relationships.
Version 4.1 enhancements
Version 4.1 includes many significant new features to deploy EAS across more diverse geographies, support for more hardware and software operating environments in combination with a more simplified installation environment.

- Simplify CMEAdmin Deployment. Integrated application and database configuration for alerting. This decreases the complexity of deployment and eases the customers' use of features such as real-time alerting.
- Degrees of Separation. This is an integral part of the EAS automated processing environment. It provides capability to resolve relationships beyond one degree of separation thus allowing organizations to recognize networks of customers, employees , suppliers and others.
- UMF XML Validation. Allows users to create a new screen to select an XML file and run the selected file through a UMF Check. This produces a more accurate output
- Hashing Function. This feature supports SHA-256 to be hash agnostic. This enables customers to choose from a set of hash algorithms.
Identity Resolution V4.1
Identity Resolution is middleware technology that helps any organization solve business problems related to recognizing true identity. Identity Resolution solves the problem of recognizing Who is who? by resolving inconsistent, ambiguous identity and attribute information into a single resolved entity across multiple data sets, perhaps despite an individual's deliberate attempts to confuse) or misrepresent his or her identity.
The Identity Resolution process determines whether multiple records that appear to describe different individuals or organizations, even with different name variations, are actually records for a single resolved identity. When the process has determined that two or more identities are the same, the multiple records are integrated into a single entity and assigned a unique identifier called a persistent key. The resolved identity data is presented in a comprehensive, unified view that maintains all of the data's original attributes, such as information about the individual or organization from prior records -- even identifying the source systems that provided the original data.
Identity Resolution - How does it work?
Identity Resolution software performs the entire identity resolution process in less than one second. IBM's ability to combine numerous value attributes beyond simply name and address data produces a previously unattainable level of precision and accuracy in your identity recognition initiatives.
Identity Resolution acquires data from source systems in real time, and then performs a five-step entity resolution process:
- Name standardization: determines and applies root names (for example, Rob, Bob and Bobby become Robert).
- Address verification and correction: compares, verifies and corrects addresses with U.S. and international address databases.
- Data quality: applies data-driven quality rules to addresses, phone numbers and date of birth, social insurance numbers and other significant numbers.
- Data enhancement: identities are enhanced by adding outside data through IBM's extensive partner network.
- Entity resolution: compares new information with existing information to determine whether the new information is about a new or existing entity.
Relationship Resolution V4.1
Relationship Resolution is an middleware technology that extends the value of customers' existing information assets by linking unique resolved identities to outside non-obvious entities to establish relationships to individuals or organizations and uncover social, professional, value or criminal networks.
IBM's non-obvious relationship awareness (Relationship Resolution) software extends identity recognition to include relationships that may not be visible. Relationship Resolution begins where most solutions leave off, extending the baseline resolved identity to identify and include the non-obvious relationships among individuals and organizations. This unique capability enables an organization to look beyond the bounds of data directly attributable to an individual to see the individual's "network value." Relationship Resolution seeks out and integrates non-obvious relationships between customers, employees, vendors and any internal and external source to determine potential value or potential danger -- even if an individual is trying to hide or disguise their identity.
Relationship Resolution - How does it work?
Relationship Resolution is built on IBM's proprietary Entity Resolution process to maximize the currency and accuracy of the baseline identities before link analysis is performed. Relationship Resolution cross references data from such sources that may reside across multiple formats (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server. flat files and so on) and other publicly available data sources (such as public records and the Office of Foreign Assets Control watch list) to determine both obvious and non-obvious relationships. For example, typical employee data can be cross-referenced for criminal activity or to highlight questionable relationships, such as supervisors and their direct reports living at the same address. The software is designed to flag suspect relationships such as this and send real-time alerts based upon a user-defined rules engine.
Relationship Resolution key features
- Customizable alert-based exception reporting. Relationship Resolution supports customizable rule-based exception reporting where only specified scenarios trigger an alert.
- Investigative tool. Relationship Resolution enables investigators and analysts to perform sophisticated searches against an identity repository to determine every instance in the organization of that identity being recorded.
- Real-time alerts. Relationship Resolution provides instantaneous alerts when suspect or positive relationships are detected, so the information is immediately actionable.
- Speedy real-time multi-source processing. Relationship Resolution processes huge volumes of data from multiple sources and maintains real-time currency, enabling your organization to rapidly identify relationships that might require attention.
- Links people by identity attributes. Relationship Resolution has the ability to link people by phone, address and other identifiers to uncover relevant yet obscured relationships.
IBM Degrees of Separation for Relationship Resolution
The Degrees of Separation feature is an optional feature of IBM's Relationship Resolution product. This feature provides the user with the ability to recognize affinity groups and networks of identities: customers, employees, suppliers, third party involved persons. This feature is configured to evaluate these relationships up to thirty (30) degrees of separation, based on the specific application. You can determine the degree of sensitivity with which to operate.
IBM Degrees of Separation for Relationship Resolution - How Does It Work?
The IBM Degrees of Separation for Relationship Resolution is a feature that extends the relationship matching capabilities of IBM Relationship Resolution (Relationship Resolution). Without using the Degrees of Separation feature, Relationship Resolution can successfully identify high-interest relationships and match entities at one degree of separation. When Relationship Resolution is enabled with Degrees of Separation, the system can detect high-interest relationships and make matches at the user-defined degree of separation - up to an almost limitless range.
Degrees of Separation uses the relationships that Relationship Resolution has detected. Degrees of Separation also leverages Relationship Resolution's configuration - including roles and relation confidence scoring. This combination makes real-time link analysis against very large data sets possible. Degrees of Separation acts as a 'smoke alarm' - assisting in work reduction by providing the best alert, based on the strongest cumulative relationship path. This means that DSN (Degrees of Separation Node)reports one conflict for each configured conflict rule per inbound entity.
Degrees of Separation's cumulative relationship path returns a Path Strength value when identifying relationships at more than one degree of separation. To determine a Path Strength value, Degrees of Separation takes all of the Relationship Resolution relationship scores within a chain of entities.
EXAMPLE
- Degrees of Separation reports that Entity A knows Entity B and Entity B knows Entity C, therefore A knows C.
- Relationship Resolution's relationship score for A and B is 70 and for B and C is 50.
- These scores are converted to decimals and multiplied to get the Degrees of Separation Path Strength. 0.70 x 0.50=0.35.
- Degrees of Separation converts this value to 35
Degrees of Separation considers all paths that connect entities. The path with the highest strength is considered.
Anonymous Resolution V4.1
Anonymous Resolution provides a complementary value proposition to Identity Resolution and Relationship Resolution software, as well as a stand-alone value proposition.
Anonymous Resolution offers revolutionary, patent-pending technology that allows organizations to resolve identities using only anonymized data from contributing systems. This anonymization allows two or more organizations to compare and correlate their proprietary data in a manner that never exposes the organizations' sensitive data values, to identify matches, as well as obvious and non-obvious relationships on demand.
Anonymous resolution is made possible by IBM's proprietary preprocessing technology that performs sophisticated cleanup and data normalization and enhancement functions on each data field. The software then processes the data through a one-way hash function -- a unique value that represents original data in a form that is mathematically indecipherable and irreversible. The transformed data can then be shared with another party while the actual data bits remain anonymous.
Anonymized data is then resolved and when a match or relationship is found, Anonymous Resolution can be configured to generate immediate real-time alerts and notifications based on the type of match or relationship discovered. Because these alerts are being produced from an anonymized data set, the only information end users will receive is a pointer to the original data source, which always resides with the original data owner. Mission owners will use this pointer on a need-to-know basis to gain access to the original source record, with all of the prerequisite permissions and precautions required by law and the data owners' privacy policies. Anonymous Resolution will significantly reduce the risk of unattended disclosure of an organization's sensitive information while also limiting the possibilities of data being re-purposed beyond the scope of its original intent.
Anonymous Resolution - How does it work?
Anonymous Resolution has two main components: the anonymizer and the resolver.
The anonymizer performs the initial processing of raw data into anonymous data using hashing algorithms. The original data cannot be recovered directly from this anonymous version. However, the output can contain the original record IDs, which enables the location of the original records, while leaving access control where it belongs, with the original data holder.
The resolver component does identity resolution and relationship resolution on anonymous data and generates alerts based on the results.
The components communicate with each other through flat files containing UMF (XML tagged Universal Message Format) records. The components may be run at separate sites and the resolver can process data made by several different anonymizers as long as they have the same configuration.
Anonymous Resolution key features
- Matches substantially similar to Relationship Resolution
- Runs Anonymous Resolution anonymizer at different site from Anonymous Resolution resolver
- Supports Multiple Anonymous Resolution anonymizer sites and User-defined attribute types
- Prevents original data from being recovered from anonymous data
Anonymous data format requirements
- Supports pointers to data holder systems and record locators
- Handles user-defined attributes (have to be consistent within an anonymizer/resolver group)
Anonymizer requirements
- Low cost of deployment
- No message queues required.
- Able to operate without an RDBMS.
- Able to operate without Group 1 but can take advantage of Group 1.
- Acquisition node technologies and UMF, XML identical to Relationship Resolution.
- Output data is sufficient to perform entity resolution and relationship awareness.
Resolver requirements
- Matching capabilities substantially similar to existing products (Relationship Resolution).
- Matching rules are configurable.
- Alerting can be Role based.
- Alerting can be Database persisted (full-featured alerting will be developed by Pro Services.)
- Alerts and alert details will be visible through the console.
IBM Name Manager
Entity Analytic Solutions Name Manager applies business intelligence to the automated name processing capabilities of the IBM Identity Resolution and Relationship Resolution products to provide multicultural name recognition software solutions for your mission-critical applications. It does this by applying business rules specific to a name's culture.
This capability will have many applications and is especially suited for customers focused on operational risk, antifraud and anti-money laundering as well as for government agencies focused on homeland security.
Entity Analytic Solutions Name Manager uses a cross section of function - the NameClassifier and the NameHunter.
These name classification and name hunting tools are bundled under a single API (you do not have the option to pick one or the other). Hence when you buy the product, you get functions of both, specifically optimized for an Entity Analytic Solutions deployment.
Name Classification -- Fast and automatic cultural classification
NameClassifier function offers a break-through approach to automated name recognition by applying the principle that once you know the culture of a name, you can apply many business rules associated with that culture. "Lou Smith," for example, would be processed differently than "Lou In Sung."
Benefits:
- Adds intelligence to automated name processing by automatically identifying the cultural classification of a personal name.
- Increases precision for name processing by delivering cultural classification as a range of scores for automated processing.
- Provides fast, easy integration via ANSI standard C++ API calls. Also can be used as a command-line utility.
Capabilities:
- Cross-cultural support is offered in one product, supporting: Anglo/European, Arabic, Chinese, Hispanic, French, German, Indian, Korean, Pakistani, Russian/Slavic, Thai, Japanese, Western African cultures and more.
- A single name part can be classified or the entire name.
- Scoring for each supported culture allows for fine-grained control of selectivity and flexible integration with existing or new enterprise applications.
- Extensible design allows for new culture-types to be added in future releases.
Name Hunter
Name Hunter function applies a detailed understanding of the cultural and linguistic properties associated with names to provide effective name-matching. You supply NameHunter with a list of names and unique record IDs and NameHunter provides automated support for character variations, such as Smith versus Simth (typo) and support for cultural variations, such as nicknames (Betty for Elizabeth).
Name Hunter functionality is included in the API. Name Hunter offers a break-through approach to automated name recognition. This approach is founded upon the principle that effective name-matching must be based on a detailed understanding of the cultural and linguistic properties associated with names.
Name Hunter is a name-searching engine that provides ranked search results, based on linguistic and cultural variation patterns. You supply Name Hunter with a list of names and unique record IDs. Name Hunter provides automated support for Level 1 and Level 2 variations in names. These include:
Level One: Character Variation Level Two: Cultural
Variation
Typos: SMITH/SIMTH, Titles: Dr., Rev, Haj,
Sri.,
JOHNSON/JPHNSON Col.,
Noise: THOMPSON/TH9MP2ON Suffixes: -aldin, -oglu,
-skii/-skaya,
Concatenations: Prefixes: Fitz, O', De La,
ANDREWS/ANDREWSJR Abdul,
Truncation/Initials: Qualifiers: Jr., fils,neto,
IVANOV/IVANOVSKY, PATRICK/P sobrinho, Ph.D.,
Infixes: de, vde.,
Nicknames: Johnny, Betty,
Alyosha, Paco,
Cultural Variants:
Imhemed/Mohamed/Mohd
When configured with the Name Classifier, selection of the appropriate cultural and linguistic variation-patterns by Name Hunter can be fully automated or this choice can be left for the end user.
Benefits:
- Adds intelligence to automated name processing by applying business rules specific to the name's culture

Charge metrics definitions
Usage Restrictions - Level of Use
The Program use is authorized based on both "Processor" and "Data Source Record" (DSR) charge metrics.
Your use of a Program may not exceed the level defined by the number of use authorizations Proof of Entitlement (PoE's) you have acquired.
Use based charges - "per Processor" charging under Full Capacity
In Full Capacity charging, PoE's must be acquired for all active "Processors" (processors available for use) that are on the server where the Program or a component of the Program is run.
Use based Charges - Data Source Records
A DSR PoE must be acquired for each block of up to 1,000,000 DSR(s) entered into the Program from any data source. For example, if the Program is intended for use with 1,500,000 data source records, two DSR PoEs must be acquired.

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each Program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support centre. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at
- http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/guides/handbook.html
Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
