Description

A Solution for the Central Office

The RS/6000 Telecommunications Server, encased in a distinctive system package, is delivered with seismic mounts as standard features. Two -48 V DC power supplies are furnished to run system electronics. A third supply can be installed to provide fault tolerant power. Four available configuration bays provide ample capacity for increased disk space or redundant power. Additional flexibility is obtained by allowing external power delivery through either the front or rear of the system enclosure.

The system is cooled by eight speed-controlled fans arranged in four modular, hot-pluggable trays. As temperatures rise in the system unit, fan speeds increase to cool critical modules. All components are easily accessible from the front with no tools needed for repair.

Maintaining High Standards for Serviceability

The RS/6000 Telecommunications Server is designed for reliability. In the unlikely event that problems occur, these features bypass, circumvent or relay problems:

  • Service processor monitoring
  • Memory error detection and correction
  • Redundant, hot-pluggable components
  • Audible and visible alarms, alarm relay

Service Processor

The service processor monitors critical system functions, generating appropriate alarms (minor, major or critical) and logging errors. If a failure occurs, the service processor can automatically "call home" to report a problem to a support facility. Service personnel can then view critical system error logs, take corrective action, dispatch a repair crew, and reboot the system as needed.

Disk Drives

SCSI disk drives are surrounded by metal covers for additional physical and ESD shielding. Each disk drive is provided with its own power supply and is isolated with shock mounts for earthquake protection. Three variable-speed fans help ensure that critical components remain cool through a wide range of operating environments. Sliding into the disk enclosure like drawers in a cabinet, the modules use self-guiding connectors and tool-free screws for positive retention.

Available Options for Increased Capability:

The Media Bay Module Option can be ordered with the initial system order to support 4mm or 8mm tape drives or an internal 8X CD-ROM.

External SCSI Disk Subsystem

The External SCSI Disk Subsystem (Model 7317-D10) can add incremental disk capacity to the RS/6000 Telecommunications Server. Mounted in a 23-inch rack, the External SCSI Disk Subsystem can hold up to 10 telecommunications disk drives for a maximum capacity of 22GB. Connected to the processor via a SCSI DE adapter, the D10 holds two power supplies, each supplying half of the SCSI circuit panel. This setup facilitates disk mirroring to keep your data available in case of a power supply outage.

Year 2000 Readiness

The Model F3L and its supported AIX operating system are Year 2000 ready. When used with their associated documentation, they are capable of correctly processing, providing, and/r receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example software, hardware and firmware) used with them properly exchange date data.

(#9552) Base Support Processor

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of December 13, 1999)

The support processor (SP) shares serial ports 1 and 3 with the base computer. This sharing provides direct communications with the SP while the base system power is off. When combined with an externally attached user-supplied modem, it provides a path to "call home" when serious problems with the base system are detected. It also enables several remote power control, reset, and boot features. The SP promotes remote maintenance and diagnostic activities, including console mirroring. The SP participates in and supports the base system password structure and language features.

The features of the Support Processor include:

  • Integrated alarm panel
  • Access via local or remote ASCII (TTY) terminals
  • Console mirroring with quick disconnect
  • Control menus, available locally or via call-in
  • Call-out failure reporting ("call home")

Feature Descriptions

The following is a list of all feature codes in numeric order.

Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.

Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums listed below refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.

The order type defines if a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model, only left on or removed from the converted model.

(#0001) After-market Order Indicator

(No Longer Available as of March 21, 2008)

This feature may be used in orders for features ordered by MES. This feature prevents configuration checking. It does not have to be repeated for subsequent MES orders for the same machine.

(#2408) PCI SCSI-2 SE Fast/Wide Adapter

The PCI SCSI-2 SE Fast/Wide Adapter is a single-ended SCSI adapter which can burst data to devices on the SCSI bus at 20MB/s. The SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus Adapter has both a internal and external connector which are physically connected to the same SCSI bus. The maximum number of addressable IDs enabled by the adapter is 15, but due to cabling restrictions the actual total number of supported devices attaching to the internal and external connector may be less. See the limitations section for details.

Characteristics:

  • Controller conforms to ANSI Doc X3T9.2/86-109 rev 10h
  • Accepts multiple commands per device from system
  • SCSI-2 data rate of up to 20 MB per second (synchronous protocol)
  • Acts as SCSI initiator (command issuer)
  • PCI Bus interface; 132 MB/sec burst rate on the PCI bus
  • 4 byte (32-bit) Bus Master
  • Address and Data Parity Support
  • Occupies one PCI Bus slot

(#8136) Rack Mountable Remote Asynchronous Node 16-Port EIA-232

(No Longer Available as of March 31, 2006)

The Rack Mountable Remote Asynchronous Node 16-Port EIA-232 (RAN) is a modified version of the existing 16-port Remote Async Node (feature #8130 or 8134) in an industry-standard 19-inch rack mount chassis to allow simpler installation and ease-of-use. Like the existing RAN, it can also be configured as a desktop device.

As an additional benefit, the new metal chassis meets FCC Class B/CISPR B when used with similarly rated RS/6000 host to meet the needs of customers with these requirements.

The RANs provide 16 ports of EIA-232 capability with full modem controls on each port and are connected to the 128-port Async Controller (Micro Channel or ISA versions) residing in the host. RANs are connected in daisy-chain fashion up to 8 RANs per 128-port Async Controller (either version).

The new rack-mountable RAN offers these enhanced features:

  • Industry-standard 19-inch rack mountable chassis (can be configured for stacking on a desktop or mounted in a 19-inch rack).
  • Meets FCC Class B/CISPR B when used with similarly rated RS/6000 host.
  • All RJ-45 connectors are now on the front panel, greatly enhancing cable management.
  • The DB-15 synchronous connectors (cabling from host to RAN and between RANs) and the power cord and switch are located on the rear panel.
  • Power supply is self contained within the unit.

The new rack-mountable RAN offers these same features as the existing RAN product:

  • Identical function and support as existing 16-port Remote Async Node (RAN), feature #8130 or 8134.
  • Operation of 16 to 128 ports by supporting up to 8 RANs (4 per synchronous line) with either a Micro Channel or ISA host adapter.
  • Ability to monitor individual port operation, synchronous line station, and other diagnostics from front panel.
  • Built-in diagnostics can test ports independent of RS/6000 host.
  • Full modem control supports the following interface signals: TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DSR, DCD, DTR, RI.
  • The same RJ-45 to DB-25 Converter Cable (feature #8133 -- quantity four per order) currently used on the existing RANs can be used to attach devices having a DB-25 connector to the Remote Async Nodes.
  • Individual ports support a maximum EIA-232 distance of 62 meters (200 feet).
  • Use of the same cabling from host to RAN and RAN to RAN: feature #8131 (4.5 meter), feature #8132 (23 cm) or customer-supplied cables.
  • Location of RAN up to 330 meters from the host using standard shielded 8-wire twisted pair cabling.
  • Remote operation via synchronous modems or CSU/DSU extends the distance and allows location of RANs at geographically distant location from the host.
  • Attributes provided: 16 RJ-45 EIA-232 ports AND 1 RAN-to-RAN connection
  • Attributes required: 1 RAN-to-128-port Controller connection OR 1 RAN-to-RAN connection
  • For 7317-F3L:
    • Minimum required: None
    • Maximum allowed: _7_ (Initial order maximum: _7_)
    • OS level required: None
    • Initial Order/MES/Both/Supported: Both

(#8137) Enhanced Remote Asynchronous Node 16-Port EIA-232

(No Longer Available as of March 31, 2006)

Provides remote connection of up to 16 EIA-232 devices to a 128-Port Asynchronous Controller.

Each port can be individually programmed to provide a asynchronous connection of 230 Kbaud, but a limited number of ports in a maximum configuration (128 ports) can be supported at this baud rate. When connected to the newly announced PCI controller, a synchronous channel data rate of 2.4 Mbps is used. If connected to the existing MCA or ISA controllers, the synchronous channel runs at the previous 1.2 Mbps data rate.

  • Operation of 16 to 128 ports by supporting up to 8 RANs (4 per synchronous line) with either a Micro Channel, ISA or PCI host adapter.
  • Ability to monitor individual port operation, synchronous line station, and other diagnostics from front panel.
