(Corrections)Overview
Bottom rule

WebSphere MQ V7.1 delivers Universal Messaging providing simple, rapid, reliable, and secure transport of messages and data offering flexible connectivity for applications, web services, and other programming environments. It also delivers market-leading Java™ Message Service (JMS) as well as publish and subscribe messaging.

WebSphere MQ is the market-leading, message-oriented middleware product that delivers a reliable, proven universal messaging backbone for almost 10,000 organizations of different sizes, spanning many industries around the world.

This new release builds on the added capabilities and new functions that were delivered in WebSphere MQ V7.0.1 and WebSphere MQ V7.0, which were announced in August 2009 and April 2008 respectively.

You can obtain the new enhanced functions offered by this new release in the following ways:

  • If you are currently using WebSphere MQ V6.0, migrate directly to WebSphere MQ V7.1 without migrating to V7.0 first.
  • If you are currently using WebSphere MQ V7.0, migrate directly to WebSphere MQ V7.1 without migrating to V7.0.1 first
  • If you are using WebSphere MQ V7.0.1, migrate to WebSphere MQ V7.1

A key new feature of WebSphere MQ V7.1 is the ability to install WebSphere MQ in different locations on your system. This also enables multiple versions to be installed at the same time, which can aid in migration, either between releases or when installing fix packs. For instance, this feature includes coexistence with WebSphere MQ V7.0.1. Those current customers using V7.0.1 should find it easier to install WebSphere MQ V7.1 alongside their existing implementation.

WebSphere MQ V7.1 queue managers and clients interoperate with queue managers and clients from any previous level of WebSphere MQ or MQSeries® products. You may need to upgrade previous queue managers, clients, or both to take advantage of new features in WebSphere MQ V7.1.

For details about WebSphere MQ V7.0, refer to Software Announcement 208-068, dated April 1, 2008.

For details about WebSphere MQ V7.0.1, refer to Software Announcement 209-245, dated August 25, 2009.

Description
Bottom rule

WebSphere MQ delivers Universal Messaging. This new release delivers new features as well as enhancements to past releases.

Multi-version and re-locatable install

Today's IT infrastructure is highly dynamic, subject to changing requirements and configurations. Disruptions to running systems must be minimized. It allows another instance of WebSphere MQ to be installed alongside an already deployed instance.

This new feature can benefit your business in multiple ways. Applying fix packs will involve less business risk, as the installation can be done without disrupting the existing installation. Also, moving from version to version will be faster as the testing will be easier as the new and existing releases will be on the same machines.

This new feature not only allows for multiple versions of WebSphere MQ to be installed on a single machine, but by necessity it enables WebSphere MQ to be installed in a location determined by the installer. Naturally, this may have an effect on any existing utilities that you may have to monitor or control WebSphere MQ. But equally, it may enable the installation to comply with varying local rules for software installs on client systems.

If you are currently running V7.0.1 deployments, the co-existence of WebSphere MQ V7.1 installations alongside these existing deployments can be exploited to reduce the costs and risks of migration.

Support for virtualized environments

Making use of virtualized environments, often described as private clouds is increasingly seen as highly valuable to many businesses. To provision quickly one or more new instances of a proven configuration can make both testing and production more efficient. WebSphere MQ supports these environments through Hypervisor editions. For details, refer to Software Announcement 211-088, dated April 5, 2011, and Software Announcement 211-353, dated October 4, 2011,

Scalability and message throughput enhancements

Many changes in WebSphere MQ V7.1 enable it to be used in high-performance environments.

  • Enhanced logger that gives better persistent throughput across multiple queues
  • Enhancements for locking giving better throughput of non-persistent messages on a single queue
  • Faster diagnostic trace on Linux™, UNIX™, and Windows™
  • Better scalability in utilizing additional cores in the processor
  • Improvements in scalability for WebSphere MQ Explorer use with configurations involving multiple servers

Taken together, the throughput benefits are more significant in messages of up to 4K bytes, which for many business environments comprise the majority of messages sent between applications.

Reduced complexity for enabling and checking system security

The importance of the effectiveness of the security applied to the connections between applications is matched by the need to ensure this security can be efficiently applied and maintained. Previous versions of WebSphere MQ enabled customers to write their own security exits to manage the authentication of channels. This allowed for effective, if complex security control of channel access, but would obviously require customers to write and maintain these exits.

In this release customers have the option of continuing to use these security exits or instead they have the choice to use IBM provided code, enabling wide-ranging control of multiple security aspects of access to channels.

These security controls are available across all platforms of WebSphere MQ V7.1 and are enabled for use with WebSphere MQ Explorer Security Wizard, a new security wizard, which runs on Linux and Windows.

Other security enhancements include:

  • Fine grained control for cluster transmit queue authorization
  • Support for SSL provider use of Suite B (FIPS 186-3)
  • Enhanced algorithm support for SSL encryption (Elliptic Curve algorithms) and hashing (SHA-2 algorithms)
Extension to support for .NET APIs

A fundamental driver for use of WebSphere MQ is to connect all business applications and systems together. In many enterprises .NET will be a common programming environment. Support for .NET is enhanced to ensure that these applications can be connected more effectively to any other applications. You can now automatically reconnect, and there is a performance harness tool to assist in benchmarking.

Integrated Telemetry function

In recent years, there was a big increase in the number of physical devices connected to business systems, providing data in a more timely manner to deliver increased business value. In recognition of this, the Telemetry feature, which was separately available to extend WebSphere MQ, is included in the product as a part of the WebSphere MQ V7.1 release.

By making use of this feature, businesses can create more connected enterprises, becoming more responsive to customer needs and staying ahead of competitors. Usage of this function is subject to a separate license charge. For more details, refer to Software Announcement 210-201, dated July 6, 2010.

Integrated Multicast function

By adding a multicast capability, WebSphere MQ V7.1 enables applications to rapidly and fairly distribute messages to multicast subscribers, including interoperation with WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging applications. This feature exploits network-level data distribution to provide peer-to-peer messaging, minimizing routing overheads for non-persistent message publications.

Upgrade from trial-to-production deployment

Users keen to make a rapid start connecting applications with WebSphere MQ can take advantage of the availability of WebSphere MQ as a free download in a trial version. WebSphere MQ V7.1 is enhanced to enable trial versions of WebSphere MQ to be upgraded to a full production license, allowing the work done on the trial version to be preserved and used as the deployment moves to production.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

WebSphere MQ 5724-H72 per Processor Value Unit

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

The programs in this announcement all have Value Unit-based pricing.

For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Your required license capacity is based upon the following factors:

  • The System z IPLA program you select
  • The applicable Value Unit Exhibit
  • The applicable terms
  • Whether your current mainframes are full capacity or sub-capacity

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:

  • AIX 5L™ V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine
  • OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i
  • Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

On/Off Capacity on Demand (CoD)

To be eligible for On/Off CoD pricing, you must be enabled for temporary capacity on the corresponding hardware, and the required contract, Amendment for iSeries® and pSeries® Temporary Capacity On Demand - Software (Z125-6907), must be signed prior to use.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

IBM Global Financing offerings are provided through IBM Credit LLC in the United States, and other IBM subsidiaries and divisions worldwide to qualified commercial and government customers. Rates and offerings are subject to change, extension, or withdrawal without notice.

Financing from IBM Global Financing helps you preserve cash and credit lines, enables more technology acquisition within current budget limits, permits accelerated implementation of economically attractive new technologies, offers payment and term flexibility, and can help match project costs to projected benefits.
