Description

The IBM System Storage N5200 filers consist of the Model A10 and Model A20, and associated software.

The Model A10 is designed to provide a single node filer with NFS, CIFS, FCP, and iSCSI support in a 3U filer mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. The N5200 filer does not include storage in the base chassis. The base chassis includes:

  • One Intel™ 2.8 GHz Xeon processor
  • 2 GB of ECC memory
  • 512 MB of non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM)
  • Four integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports
  • Four integrated 2 Gbps Fibre Channel ports
  • Dual redundant hot-plug integrated power supplies and cooling fans
  • Three PCI-X expansion slots for additional FC HBAs or Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs)

The maximum number of additional expansion adapters is three. The Model A10 can be upgraded to a maximum of five multipath (loop A and loop B) Fibre Channel loops (10 2 Gbps FC ports) via the addition of three optional FC HBAs for Disk Attachment (#1004). The Model A10 can be upgraded to a maximum of ten 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports via the addition of three optional dual-port fiber Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface cards (NICs) (#1003). The Model A10 may be upgraded to a Model A20. The upgrade from a Model A10 to a Model A20 is a disruptive upgrade.

The Model A20 is designed to provide identical function as the N5200 Model A10, but with the addition of a second processing node and the Clustered Failover (CFO) licensed function. The Model A20 also supports a maximum of 168 drives, 4 GB of ECC memory, and 8 back-end Fibre Channel loops. The Model A20 consists of two processing nodes that are designed to provide failover and failback function, helping improve overall availability. For the Model A20, each processing node is a 3U rack-mountable filer. Therefore, the Model A20 occupies a total of 6U of rack space.

The N5200 Model A20 includes:

  • Two Intel 2.8 GHz Xeon processors, one per node
  • 4 GB of ECC memory, 2 GB per node
  • 1 GB of non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM), 512 MB per node
  • Eight integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, four per node
  • Eight integrated 2 Gbps Fibre Channel ports, four per node
  • Four redundant hot-plug integrated power supplies and cooling fans, two per node
  • Six PCI-X expansion slots for additional FC HBAs or Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs), three per node
  • Infiniband (IB) cluster interconnect between the two processing nodes

For the Model A20, the maximum number of additional expansion adapters is six. The Model A20 can be upgraded to a maximum of ten multipath (loop A and loop B) fibre channel loops (20 2 Gbps FC ports) via the addition of six optional FC HBAs for Disk Attachment (#1004). The Model A20 can up upgraded to a maximum of 20 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports via the addition of six optional dual-port fibre Gigabit Ethernet NICs (#1003).

The physical proximity of the two processing nodes within a Model A20 (with respect to each other) is determined by which Infiniband cluster interconnect cables are ordered (#1037, #1038, #1039, #1040, and #1041). Optical cables, feature numbers 1040 and 1041, also require feature number 1042.

The N5200 filer Models A10 and A20 require at least one storage expansion unit, either an EXN1000 or an EXN2000. The EXN1000 storage expansion unit provide a 3U rack-mountable disk enclosure containing 14 serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) disk drives, either in 250 GB or 320 GB capacities. The EXN2000 storage expansion unit provides a 3U rack-mountable disk enclosure containing 14 Fibre Channel disk drives. The EXN2000 supports the following Fibre Channel disk drive speeds and capacities:

  • 15,000 revolutions per minute (15K RPM) in 72 GB and 144 GB capacities
  • 10,000 revolutions per minute (10K RPM) in 72 GB, 144 GB, and 300 GB capacities

Each EXN2000 storage expansion unit contains 14 Fibre Channel disk drives, all of a particular type (rotational speed/capacity). When attaching EXN2000 Fibre Channel storage expansion units to the IBM System Storage N5200 or N5500, you may not attach EXN2000 storage expansion units containing more than two types (rotational speed/capacity) of fibre channel disk drives to a single N5200 or N5500 filer.

The maximum raw storage capacity of the N5200 system varies depending on the type of disk storage expansion unit (SATA or FC) and the capacity of disk drives used. The following table describes the maximum supported total physical storage capacity for both the N5200 Model A10 and A20.

                                      Maximum Maximum Maximum
Disk Disk drive storage disk physical
enclosure capacity enclosures drives capacity

EXN1000 250 GB SATA disk drives 12 168 24 TB
EXN1000 320 GB SATA disk drives 9 126 40 TB
EXN2000 72 GB FC disk drives 12 168 24 TB
EXN2000 144 GB FC disk drives 12 168 48 TB
EXN2000 300 GB FC disk drives 12 168 50 TB

EXN1000 SATA storage expansion units and EXN2000 FC storage expansion units must not share Fibre Channel loops. A maximum of six storage expansion units (EXN1000 or EXN2000) are supported on a single Fibre Channel loop.

The N5200 filers are designed to interoperate with products capable of data transmission in the industry-standard iSCSI, CIFS, FCP, and NFS protocols. These include the IBM eServer pSeries®, iSeries™ (NFS only), xSeries® and zSeries® (NFS only) servers.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

The IBM System Storage N5200 is capable, as of December 9, 2005, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via IBM's Web site at

Hardware requirements

Licensed machine code (LMC)

The N5200 requires LMC level 7.1.0, or later. Some N5200 features and functions may not be available or supported in all environments. Current information on supported environments, prerequisites, and minimum operating systems levels is available at

Current license terms for the machine code provided with this product prohibit transfer of the machine code without approval from Network Appliance.

Licensed functions

The following licensed function is required on the N5200:

  • Data ONTAP (#7200 or #7250)

Licensed functions require the selection of N5200 Model A10 or A20 features and the acquisition of the corresponding IBM 2870 Model 641 or 642 function authorization features.

Software requirements

Current information on servers, operating systems, host adapters, and connectivity products supported by the N5200 is available at

Limitations

  • The N5200 is supported only in rack installations.
  • This product is functional with the IBM eServer iSeries™ and OpenPower™ platforms. However, on the iSeries, support is only available on Power Linux and AIX partitions, not i5/OS.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: Following good safety practice, IBM recommends that two or more persons install this product.

Physical configuration and installation planning for the 2864 is a customer responsibility. Information about physical configuration and installation requirements, including equipment, site, and power requirements, can be found in the IBM System Storage N5200 and N5500 Installation and Setup Instructions (GC26-7784).

A customer-supplied Ethernet cable is required to connect the machine to a server or Ethernet network.

Cable orders: Fibre Channel cables are required to connect an expansion unit to a 2864 system. Cables can be purchased using expansion unit features.

For the two-node Model A20, cables are required to connect the nodes.

Installability: Estimated time to unpack an IBM System Storage N5200, install it in the rack, and perform a simple discovery and configuration is two hours.
