DESCRIPTION
USER PRODUCTIVITY
The lightweight IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX is convenient for mobile
professionals who do not always have access to AC outlets. Timely
electronic capture of data at its source, and immediate access to
information in the remote work place, improves users' productivity,
and adds quality and value to the products and services they provide.
The IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX physical package is based on a
clamshell design. It fits in most attache cases, and weighs
11.0 pounds including the Rechargeable Battery Pack II.
The high function and light weight is achieved by combining
advanced technologies such as:
o Active Matrix, Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Color LCD
o Integrated quick charge (3 hours) when connected to an AC source
o A 2.5-inch 80MB fixed disk
o Slim 3.5-inch internal disk drive
o Thin 84-key keyboard for U.S. English language
o Integrated track ball pointing device
o Highly integrated electronic planar board
o Power management hardware and firmware
o Low power fixed disk, LCD and memory technologies.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX combines the flexibility of a portable and
a desktop system, with the system resources to run advanced PS/2
applications. An optional external numeric keypad is available for
numeric data entry applications. The following IBM PS/2
Model CL57 SX standard I/O ports are provided:
o Pointing device port for the external numeric keypad, or the IBM
PS/2 Miniature Mouse. The numeric keypad also has a mouse port
to enable both numeric keypad and pointing device connections
concurrently.
o Serial device port for connecting serial devices.
o Parallel device port for connecting devices such as printers.
o VGA display port for connecting supported IBM VGA monitors.
o External expansion port provides connectivity to host and LAN
systems via the Communications Cartridge II that can accommodate
3270, 5250 emulation and Token-Ring half-size adapters. The
Communications Cartridge II uses a quick attach/detach mechanism
for connecting to the IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX and requires no
external power source.
To enhance performance, a co-processor socket, designed to be
compatible with the Intel 80387SX 20MHz co-processor or equivalent,
is provided for process and compute intensive applications. For
applications that require or perform better with large size memory,
each IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX has 2MB of memory with optional memory
modules for up to 16MB. There are two memory expansion sockets
available. The 2MB, 4MB and 8MB memory module options support memory
configurations of 2 (standard), 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16MB.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT AND USABILITY
The TFT color display, keyboard, power management, and packaging
technologies used in the IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX improve user
satisfaction with the convenience, and usability of a battery or
AC-adapter powered portable system. The design provides:
o Convenient weight and size for carrying in a briefcase.
o Easy to read, 10.4-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Color Liquid
Crystal Display (LCD) with 640 by 480 Video Graphic Array (VGA)
resolution. Depending on the application, up to 16 out of 4096
colors can be addressed on the LCD. Simultaneous LCD and CRT
(eight dots) display is supported. The Thin Film Transistor
(TFT) technology used in the construction of the display on the
CL57 SX is the most advanced state-of-the-art screen technology
available in a computer display today.
There are over 921,000 thin film transistors used in its
construction, and with advanced manufacturing techniques we are
able to maintain a defect rate of less than .00002.
This quality state-of-the-art VGA screen provides clear,
bright, vibrant colors approaching cathode ray technology.
o Efficient power management:
- To allow productive use of the mobile user's time, a
suspend/resume function is provided. An application is
suspended by closing the clamshell leaving the power switch
on. When the clamshell is opened, the application resumes at
the point it was suspended. During suspension, system
components are automatically powered off except for the real
time clock and application memory.
- For changing the rechargeable battery pack without disrupting
the application, the IBM PS/2 NiMH Battery Pack II consists
of two batteries and should be replaced one at a time.
- The IBM PS/2 AC Adapter (60W) includes an internal (3 hour)
quick charger that recharges the IBM PS/2 NiMH Battery
Pack II automatically while the system is connected to an
AC-power source.
- To conserve battery power, the hardware supports sleep mode.
Sleep mode conserves battery power during idle times between
clock cycles and key strokes by putting system components in
an idle state resulting in low power usage. Application,
operational, operating system and environmental
characteristics will affect actual battery duration between
recharges.
o Informative LED display with international symbols that indicate
operational and environmental status including:
- Battery Status 1
- Battery ID 1
- Battery Status 2
- Battery ID 2
- Fixed Disk Drive in use
- Diskette Drive in use
- Numeric Lock
- Caps Lock
- Scroll Lock
- Suspend mode
- Carrier Detect.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
