  • The impacts of assembly dependencies can be analyzed through a graph.
  • Concurrent engineering is enriched: any existing surface or wireframe element can be replaced by another element in a multiple part environment.

For industries engaged in advanced design engineering that requires product, process, and resource modeling, Release 3 delivers six new P2 products and offers substantial productivity improvements for all previously released Platform 2 (P2) products. From sheetmetal parts to hybrid parts and styling surfaces, additional productivity features and a larger scope of feature options permit the design of a greater variety of more complex products in less time.

Companies of any size can benefit from CATIA Version 5's unique knowledgeware technology. Release 3 provides another step forward in knowledge-based product development and corporate know-how management. Through CATIA Version 5's extended knowledgeware portfolio (with two new leading-edge products), a company can capture and manage corporate know-how at the product life cycle level.

  • Using the CATIA — Knowledge Advisor product, the company can first embed knowledge within a design and then use it to assist in engineering decisions.
  • Corporate procedures, standards, and methodologies can be defined as generic rules and checks that can be shared throughout the enterprise with CATIA — Knowledge Expert 2. The objective is to:
    • Build a clear and accurate image of the company's best practices and processes
    • Make sure that they are respected
    • Enrich them with the knowledge acquired with each new experience.
  • An intuitive and easy-to-use knowledge scripting language (CATIA — Generative Knowledge 2) further automates the product creation process.

The direct benefits are higher productivity through reduction of errors and a shorter time to market .

Increasing CATIA's superior ability to support digital mockup-centric processes of any size, Release 3 delivers important enhancements that efficiently address all aspects of digital mock-ups.

  • The new DMU Optimizer 2 product computes an optimized representation of data for verification in the context of the full digital mock-up. By generating a light external envelope, the Optimizer allows designers involved in the pre-validation of prototype assembly and maintenance procedures at the design stage to handle digital mockups of all sizes, from consumer goods assemblies to large automotive, aerospace, plant, ship, and heavy machinery.
  • Enhancements to existing Product Synthesis Solution products provide a highly productive environment for local verification on subassemblies or parts.
  • For companies that need to optimize their routing disciplines for such structures as piping, tubing, conveyors, ductwork, and raceways, the new CATIA — Systems Routing 2 product enables designers to optimize their production system routings from conceptual definitions to detailed preliminary routings. It allows them to continually iterate their routing definitions to optimize production.
  • For plant designers, Release 3 introduces the CATIA — Plant Layout 2 product. This product enables organizations to optimize their layout process for production facilities to foster optimized factory production and output. It provides an accessible solution for departments of small- and medium-sized enterprises. Its friendliness, intuitiveness, and ease of use make it possible for inexperienced users to use the system with a minimal cost of implementation. The complete layout of a facility can be created almost completely by merely using the mouse. The product has a user interface that helps users make the transition from traditional 2D layout to 3D.

CATIA Version 5 Release 3 is highly adapted to all customers in fabrication and assembly. The latter will find a solution to describe their standard parts in a way that enriches product definitions. Thanks to its extended knowledgeware functions, which drastically automate the product creation process, this release is also well adapted to automotive and aeronautics customers involved in casting tooling. Additionally, it will satisfy suppliers, especially small- to mid-sized process-oriented companies, that can master their complete product development process using CATIA Version 5 and collaborate with their sub-contractors that use Version 4.

For current CATIA Version 4 customers, this release expands the range of opportunities for combined implementations of CATIA Version 4 and Version 5 to leverage the benefits of the broad spectrum of Version 4 applications and the productivity and ease of use of Version 5.

With the rapid pace of release delivery (three per year), CATIA Version 5 Release 3 demonstrates the commitment of IBM and Dassault Systemes to ongoing development and support of CATIA Version 5's competitiveness for all industries and for companies of all sizes. CATIA Version 5 Packaging and Products

The CATIA Version 5 packaging model gives you an easy way to select the solution best suited to your user profiles and process requirements. At the heart of this model are:

  • Platforms
  • Solutions
  • Configurations
  • Products

Platforms and Solutions: CATIA Version 5 platforms group solutions and their configurations and products to address typical customer profiles. CATIA Platform 1 (CATIA P1) provides basic applications in a suite of feature-based solid modeling solutions that comply with Windows™ user interface guidelines. These solutions offer a familiar production environment for users who are already comfortable with native Windows applications. P1 solutions are an excellent vehicle for new CATIA customers who want to extend their design capabilities to embrace digital product definition and to position themselves for e-business.

CATIA Platform 2 (CATIA P2) provides an extended set of solutions based on a hybrid modeling technology. CATIA P2 solutions provide expanded digital product and process definition and review functions capable of operating on projects characterized by a high level of design complexity. An extended mechanical design solution addresses advanced design requirements involving multiple data representations, such as mechanical features and styled shapes. In addition, the capabilities of the CATIA — Knowledge Advisor 2 product allow users to capture corporate knowledge with rapidly iterative design alternatives and with significant error reduction. Other domain-specific solutions are and will continue to be delivered to address global digital enterprise requirements that span the mock-up, manufacturing, plant, and operations domains.

CATIA P2 complements the CATIA Solutions Version 4 portfolio with the totally new Version 5 architecture. This architecture allows CATIA Version 5 to extend productivity beyond conventional Windows compliant systems. It exploits advanced 3D graphic user interface concepts to deliver a powerful, highly productive environment that is adapted to full scale digital product definition.

Configurations: Configurations provide a convenient and attractive way for you to order and install a selected combination of products that are appropriate to a particular user profile as a single licensed product. Configurations can be used in either of two licensing modes:

  • Nodelock wherein the use of local display of the hardware configuration is mandatory. There is no limit to the number of CATIA Version 5 processes launched for a given license (product or configuration). For instance, a user can launch the following simultaneous processes:
    • An interactive session
    • A process executed through an OLE container application
    • Replay of macros recorded from captured sequences of user interactions
  • With concurrent usage of licenses on a network wherein a user on one workstation with one display uses one license per configuration or product used, regardless of the number of processes. If the display changes, then an additional license is used for the corresponding process.

CATIA Version 5 add-on and shareable products require a license for a configuration that includes at least the prerequisite products. Licenses for CATIA configurations are acquired and released for the total configuration. The functions within a configuration cannot be shared.

A configuration is required for each CATIA Version 5 seat. There are two types of configurations:

  • Standard Configurations: Standard configurations contain a predefined set of functions and products, corresponding to the most common user profiles across industries and processes. These configurations are offered at an attractive price compared to the sum of the prices of the individual products. Any number of shareable products can be ordered to complement a standard configuration.
  • Custom Configurations: Customize any standard configuration by adding CATIA Version 5 add-on products. Custom configurations allow you to adapt configuration content to specific user needs while still benefiting from competitive configuration pricing.

A custom configuration can be ordered for one seat, or an unlimited number of identical seats. The number of each add-on product in a custom configuration must equal the number of base configurations ordered. Regardless of the number of seats ordered, a custom configuration order will generate a single serial number and will have a single license assigned. After installation, any changes made to the base configuration must be applied to all seats under that serial number.

After initial installation, configurations allow you to manage the evolution and growth of configurations by ordering additional add-on or shareable products.

Products: Products are the elementary software building blocks for CATIA Version 5 installations. Products may be ordered in three ways:

  1. As a pre-defined set of products included in a standard configuration
  2. As add-on products on top of a standard configuration to build a custom configuration.
  3. As a shareable product . In this case the product is delivered with its own license key. Sharable products allow one user to obtain the license at the beginning of the session, or to leave it for another user within the network.

Equipment and Systems Engineering Solutions

New Product

CATIA — Systems Routing 2 (SRT, 5691-SRT): Systems Routing 2 enables organizations to optimize the design of production system routings for all disciplines. From conceptual definition to the creation of a detailed preliminary routing, Systems Routing 2 allows designers to continually iterate their routing definitions. It supports all routing disciplines, including conveyors, ductwork, raceways, piping, and tubing. Users cab fully define "run" definitions and then evolve these designs into actual geometries, such as conveyor ductwork and parts. This evolutionary approach allows designers to move at their own pace when detailing routing designs and allows maximum reuse of previous work. Specific functions include:

  • A user interface that is optimized for iterating routing designs
  • Easy maneuverability in 3D space with an intuitive "snap to 3D grid" capability
  • An evolutionary design approach that promotes intuitive design progression
  • Full modification capability for quick design changes
  • A design table based parametric catalog for sizing parts at placement time
  • The ability to generate user-customizable bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Spatial object management for making accurate interference assessments early in the design process
  • Interference detection through the CATIA Product Synthesis Solutions DMU products

Enhanced Product

CATIA — Circuit Board Design 2 (CBD, 5691-CBD)

  • Enables the creation and management of electrical parts catalogs. Once created, the user can update a catalog each time an ECAD circuit board is imported using either a prismatic or a realistic representation of each component. This new capability allows the user to:
    • Combine the prismatic representation of selected components with the realistic representation of other components within one circuit board assembly
    • Get a realistic view of the circuit board assembly
    • Perform a sharper analysis of the circuit board assembly within the full CATIA digital product definition

The catalog is a "standard" part catalog. The user can therefore take advantage of all the basic parts catalog capabilities provided by CATIA Object Manager.

  • Pre-place critical components from the catalog (such as frontier connectors). The user can pre-place and assemble (when CATIA — Assembly Design 2 is installed) component parts from catalogs on a circuit board design so that the components location will take into account the constraints coming from the mechanical context. The pertinent information about the component location is sent to the ECAD system.
  • Manage mapping files between ECAD systems and CATIA Version 5.

Plant Solutions

New Product

CATIA — Plant Layout 2 (PLO, 5691-PLO): Plant Layout 2 enables design and engineering users to quickly define conceptual and preliminary plant layouts. General space arrangements, reserved areas, structural grid layouts, circulation flow, plant ingress and egress, and reserved areas/volumes can be quickly are easily produced. All plant spaces/volumes are logically organized in a product hierarchy. Functional zones within the plant, such as electrical or structural, are then defined as one or more grids, areas, or volumes within the hierarchy. Hierarchy areas/volumes for a given usage need not be contiguous or adjacent or even on the same plane; the Product Hierarchy maintains the logical association between them. The user then adds to, changes, or deletes areas/volumes within the product hierarchy as the layout evolves. A powerful pathway reservation feature sets aside areas/volumes for exclusive use as walkways, HVAC, piping, electrical, conveyors, material flow, or hydraulics.

Users can work and visualize their layouts in either 2D or 3D. In 3D, plant layouts resemble conceptual block models common in engineering practice where reserved spaces/volumes are "blocked out" to be further detailed later on. Powerful reference links can be made to existing DXF drawings. A user can add the drawing and existing areas within to the Product Hierarchy and treat them as limits to or definitions of new areas in which to do additional layout work. This capability is particularly useful to users doing retrofit plant layout or changeovers of the general arrangement when new manufacturing needs arise in an existing plant. Visualization options allow 2D or volumetric 3D viewing and working modes. Report capability in Plant Layout is very powerful and can detail, summarize, or sort areas/volumes at any level of detail and include totals for distances, area, perimeter and others spatial properties. The benefit of Plant Layout is the speed with which new designs can be defined and compared with others as part of "what if" scenarios. Often, the greatest payoffs in optimization and cost savings are realized in the very early stages of layout because it is here that the direction for the entire project is set.

Designers involved in conceptual and preliminary layout will find Plant Layout easy to use. The complete layout of the facility can be created almost entirely with the mouse, and the product has an interface that helps users make the transition from traditional 2D layout to 3D. Its ease-of-use and intuitive interface are particularly helpful to users who are already familiar with traditional 2D drawing programs and are making the transition to 3D design.

Application Programming Interfaces

The CATIA application programming interfaces, IUA and GII, have for 12 years offered one of the broadest open architectures in CAD/CAM. They have supported the development of customized applications on top of CATIA from Version 3 to Version 4 by numerous third-party vendors and customers.

To support the new generation of solutions in CATIA Version 5, a new generation programming architecture is needed to take advantage of the evolution in computing technology:

  • Windows NT/OLE interfaces
  • End user expectation driven by Windows paradigms
  • Object Oriented C++ programming
  • CORBA compliance
  • Java™/C++ seamless access
As a result, new programming interfaces are introduced as the scalable application architecture for CATIA next-generation products, namely, CATIA Version 5 and the ENOVIA portfolio.

For CATIA Version 5, these new tools will be the successor for IUA and GII. They are meant to reduce the cost and increase the ease of integration of third party and customer applications. Multiple levels of APIs will be progressively made available:

  • Visual Basic programming tools (availability started with CATIA Version  5 Release 1 for Windows NT platforms)
  • API based on C++ programming tools, using the system's objects
  • Core system extension by creating new objects
If your CATIA Version 4 installation is customized, you should become familiar with Visual Basic programming techniques and with the macro generation tools delivered with Version 5 Release 1. Doing so will allow you to plan and speed-up the development of similar system customization in CATIA Version 5 to what you have in CATIA Version 4, provided the functions are not already met by the "off-the-shelf" CATIA Version 5 system.

The APIs listed above are meant to provide the information necessary to achieve the interoperability of an independently created computer program with the Version 5 products described in this announcement and customers are required to notify IBM if such interoperability cannot be achieved by use of these APIs. These APIs are provided pursuant to the terms of the IBM Customer Agreement. You must first license such interfaces before making use of them to achieve interoperability.

CATIA Version 5 Upgrades/Migrations: Responding to your business needs, CATIA Version 5 provides the migration paths from CATIA Version 4 Workstation products to CATIA Version 5 on UNIX or Windows NT.

Upgrade paths have been developed to protect your Version 4 investment by providing, in most cases, a path to upgrade existing Version 4 configurations or combinations of Version 4 complementary (a la carte) products to their Version 5 functionally equivalent packages with no additional PLC charge. Also, upgrades will be offered to take advantage of CATIA Version 5's evolving capabilities. Upgrade paths will be announced over time as additional CATIA Version 5 applications become generally available.

Each upgrade or migration can be ordered up to the current quantity of the existing "from" product install base.

The available paths for products announced in Release 3 are:

From CATIA
Version 4 To CATIA Version 5
Products Shareable/Add-on Products

5626-SHE 5691-SMD Shareable Product

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements

Common Hardware Requirements

The following requirements are common to all operating systems supported by Release 3.0. System unit and graphic adapter requirements are platform specific and are detailed in the topics that follow.

  • Required Components and Features
    • Disk Drive: An internal or external disk drive is required to store program executables, program data, the user environment and to provide paging space. The minimum recommended size is 2 GB.
    • Memory: 128 MB of main memory is the minimum required. 256 MB of main memory is required for a productive environment. Requirements may be greater when large amounts of data are used.
    • External Drives: A CD-ROM drive is required for program installation and for access to the online documentation, which can optionally be downloaded to disk.
    • Display: A graphic color display compatible with the selected platform-specific graphic adapter. The minimum recommended size for usability reasons is 17 inches. Minimum resolution for Windows workstations is 800x600 and 1280x1024 for UNIX workstations. When selecting a graphic adapter, hardware texturing capability is strongly recommended when using CATIA Version 5 products that use texture mapping, in which case the amount of texture RAM has to be adequate for the number and complexity of textures to be used.
    • Keyboard: A specific keyboard compatible with the selected installation locale may be required for national language support.
    • Pointing Device: Three-button mouse. On Windows 95, 98, and NT workstations, a two-button mouse may alternatively be used (the third button is emulated with a keyboard sequence). The three-button mouse is recommended for usability reasons. IntelliMouse (two buttons plus wheel) is an alternative to the three-button mouse on Windows workstations.
  • Optional Components and Features: A SpaceBall or a SpaceMouse can be used in addition to the standard mouse to perform graphic manipulations (zoom, pan, rotate). The required drivers are delivered with these devices. Support of these devices is available with the DMU Navigator 1 (DN1) and DMU Space Analysis (SP1) P1 Add-on products.

The robustness of the overall solution is dependant on the robustness of the operating system and the hardware environment used. Windows NT and UNIX hardware configurations certified By Dassault Systemes for running CATIA products are published at:

Although CATIA Version 5 products might run on configurations or with graphic adapters other than those specified for each of the platforms below, incidents specific to such configurations or adapters will not be accepted for support.

5628-ACN System Program Order: CATIA Version 5 programs for all platforms (UNIX and Microsoft Windows) will be shipped under the 5628-ACN System Program Order (SPO). The SPO is required for all program shipments and future updates.

Initial orders placed for a program type 5691 without a corresponding order or MES for the 5628-ACN SPO will either fail order validation, or will not generate a media shipment. The SPO is designated to the processor on which the program type 5691 is licensed. Each customer number must have its own SPO.

Initial Orders: When ordering the first 5691-xxx configuration for CATIA Version 5, an order must also be placed for the 5628-ACN SPO. Both the 5691-xxx program order and the SPO must be for the same CPU system type/system number, and have the same scheduled shipment date.

Subsequent Licenses: The SPO must have a feature number for every CATIA Version 5 configuration that is installed or on-order. Therefore, when a configuration that was not previously installed is ordered, the SPO must be updated.

To Update an On-order System: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an on-order system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired. Also, for asset registration and billing purposes an order for the individual licensed program type 5691 is required.

To Update an Installed System: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an installed system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired.

5628-ACN Feature Numbers: The following program feature numbers are used with the 5628-ACN System Program Order to show which configurations and products are installed. This information is used for shipment of media. The maximum quantity of each of the features that may be specified is one for each of the 5691 programs.

The Licensing Mechanism: CATIA Version 5 Licensing on Workstations: In workstation environments, CATIA controls the number of concurrent users of a CATIA configuration or product, according to the number of licenses acquired for the configuration or product.

CATIA Version 5 delivers identical licensing mechanisms on UNIX and Windows NT environments, based on IBM License Use Management (LUM). The following licensing principles apply:

  • A CATIA Version 5 configuration (standard or custom) will require a license. Licenses for CATIA Version 5 configurations are acquired and released for the total configuration. The products within a configuration cannot be shared.
  • CATIA Version 5 shareable products will require a license, in addition to one for the prerequisite configuration and any prerequisite product, if applicable.
  • In all cases, licenses are acquired at the beginning of the process and are released at its termination.

CATIA Version 5 can be used in two licensing modes, either nodelock or with concurrent usage of licenses on a network.

Nodelock usage: The use of local display of the hardware configuration is mandatory for CATIA Version 5 usage in nodelock mode. There is no limit to the number of CATIA Version 5 processes launched for a given license (configuration or product). For instance, a user can launch the following simultaneous processes:

  • A Version 5 interactive session
  • A Version 5 process executed through an OLE container application
  • Replay of macros recorded from captured sequences of Version 5 user interactions.

In nodelock mode of operation, only one CATIA license per configuration and product can be registered by machine, and only one CATIA user can run at a time. If you want multiple licenses per configuration or product, or multiple users, refer to the Concurrent Usage section.

Concurrent usage: A user on one machine on one display uses one license per configuration or product used, regardless of the number of processes. If the display changes, then an additional license is taken for the corresponding process.

CATIA add-on and shareable products require a license for a configuration which includes at least the prerequisite products.

Licenses for CATIA configurations are acquired and released for the total configuration. The functions within a configuration cannot be shared.
