Overview

IBM's eNetwork™ Wireless Gateway has been enhanced and renamed to IBM SecureWay™ Wireless Gateway for AIX^® V5.1. This software helps improve productivity for mobile employees by giving them the enterprise network access they need for top performance.

SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 includes:

IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway and Clients, which extend TCP/IP communications to mobile clients running over a wide variety of wireline network connections
IBM SecureWay Wireless Gatekeeper, a user-friendly graphical administration application that enables users to remotely administer a Wireless Gateway server from multiple platforms

SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 offers enhanced:

Performance and operations of network connections using the SecureWay Wireless Gateway
Reliability and scalability to help you address enterprise or customer needs through fewer Gateway servers

Key Prerequisites

SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX requires AIX V4.3.2 or higher
SecureWay Wireless Clients for Windows™ requires Windows 95 R2, Windows 98, Windows NT™ V4 plus SP4 or SP5, or Windows CE H/PC 2.00 or H/PC PRO 2.11
SecureWay Wireless Gatekeeper requires one of the following:
- Microsoft™ Windows 95/98/NT platform that supports Java™ Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.1.7
- IBM AIX platform that supports Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.1.8
- Sun Solaris RISC platform that supports Java Runtime Environment 1.1.8

Description

IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1

The IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 continues to be the strategic software for IBM customers to extend applications such as 5250 (AS/400^®) and 3270 (CICS^®, IMS™, and so on) Web-based client applications to mobile and/or wireless users. In addition to features seen in eNetwork Wireless Gateway V4, the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 adds several new features:

Satellite Support
Windows CE clients
PPP client support
User-friendly remote administration application (called the Gatekeeper)

SecureWay Wireless Gateway

New functions available with the SecureWay Wireless Gateway include:

New network support:
- Norcom/Bellsouth Wireless Data combination which provides a satellite solution for customers needing extra coverage issues.
- Also, with advances in secure IP connections both in the industry and at network providers, customers can now setup IP connections across the Internet with service providers instead of using X.25 connections in some cases.
New Clients:
- Windows CE (Handheld) and Windows CE Professional (larger Handheld).
- PPP, allowing customers to use the SecureWay Wireless Gateway as an access point for any client that uses PPP for access.
- Windows 32 clients using standard Windows APIs, meaning customers can use and configure any modem via the Microsoft Dial-up Networking application/box.
SecureWay Gatekeeper:
- This new server administration program is a user-friendly GUI application that allows customers to remotely manage a large number of gateways and users from any platform.

Limitations

National language versions of IBM SecureWay Wireless Gatekeeper are supported on the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and AIX platforms.

Year 2000

These products do not have date dependencies and are, therefore, Year 2000 ready.

Euro Currency

These programs are not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

Intended Customers: Customers fall into several distinct categories for IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1.

Direct Customers

The first set of customers are those that have a direct need to grant enterprise network access to their mobile employees. These have several distinct needs, depending on the company size, the nature of the workers, and the line of business to which the mobile workers report.

One set of these customers is looking to take a current application (such as an AS/400-based dispatch system or a Sales Force application) and simply grant wireless access to mobile employees, making better use of the software application already installed.

Another set of customers actually installs a new application and considers mobile clients different from LAN-connected clients.

For both sets of customers that data transmitted over the wireless connection requires optimization, encryption,and authentication to some degree. This product contains 56-bit encryption. Customers who purchase a new system usually leave middleware decisions up to the vendor providing the wireless solution, whereas customers wishing to extend current applications tend to evaluate middleware themselves.

Resellers and Business Partners

The differences mentioned above provide the need for a second set of customers, specifically wireless solution, device, and network providers that require some type of wireless middleware for connection optimization, encryption, and authentication. IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 appeals to these customers because they can use traditional networking software methods (for example, Sockets) for communications, as opposed to a proprietary API. This reduces development time and enables solution providers to address certain concerns. Customers might have multiple applications across a single wireless connection.

Hardware Requirements

Gateway Install Hardware Requirements

The following hardware is required to use the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1:

RS/6000^® with 100MB disc space available.
IBM X.25 coprocessor card is required if you are connecting IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX^® V5.1 to any of the following packet radio networks:
- ARDIS-X.25
- DataTAC-SCR-X.25
- Mobitex-X.25
- Modacom-SCR
Note: If you connect to ARDIS, DataTAC-SCR, or Mobitex directly, rather than through X.25, they do not require an X.25 coprocessor card.
- For MCA-bus RS/6000 machines, use the IBM X.25 Interface Co-Processor/2 card.
- For ISA-bus RS/6000 machines, use the IBM X.25 Interface Co-Processor/1 card.
Asynchronous adapter and modem if you are connecting the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 to a circuit-switched cellular network using RS232 communication, for example, PSTN, GSM, or AMPS.
LAN adapter for connection to the IP network, and to the RNG of either a DataTAC-TCP, Mobitex, or RNC3000 radio network.
Because the data from a CDPD network provider is typically routed to the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 over the Internet, there is no specific adapter that is required to attach the Wireless Gateway to a CDPD network. The IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 could use LAN cards that eventually connect to an IP router, or it could have some other type of connection, such as frame relay. Make sure the CDPD system is fully operational before starting the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1.
To attach a DATARADIO network to the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1, connect each multi-site controller (MSC) using TCP/IP over Ethernet. Set up and test the network for standard DATARADIO operation before configuring for the Wireless Gateway.

Client Install Hardware Requirements

The following hardware is required to use the IBM SecureWay Wireless Client:

A mobile computer with sufficient resources (processor speed, hard drive, and memory) to run the operating system, manage modem communications, and run your other applications. The only additional resource required for the SecureWay Wireless Client is disk space, as described in "Client disk space requirements" in the manual ( SecureWay Wireless Gateway Administrator's Guide ).
A modem or interface card for your network.

Software Requirements

Gateway Install Software Requirements

The following system software is required to use the IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1:

AIX Version 4.3.2
AIX V4.3.2 required software:
- Base Operating System, level 4.3.2:
- TCP/IP Server
- TCP/IP Client
- AIXlink 1.1.3.0 or later
Note: AIXlink is needed only if using an X.25 adapter.
- AIXlink/X.25 Runtime Environment
- AIXlink/X.25 Server Support
- AIXlink/X.25 NPI (Network Programming Interface)
- To use the network management function, you must install TME 10™ NetView^® for AIX V3.1.2. Note that NetView for AIX requires other software, for example, X-Windows.

Client Install Software Requirements

You can install the SecureWay Wireless Client on any of these operating systems:

Windows™ 95 R0 or R1 with the Winsock 2 update (the Winsock 2 update will be installed with the SecureWay Wireless Client if it is needed)
Windows 95 R2
Windows 98
Windows NT™ Version 4 with Service Pack 4 or 5
Windows CE Version H/PC 2.00, or H/PC PRO 2.11

Corequisite Software

The SecureWay Wireless Client requires a SecureWay Wireless Gateway.

Limitations: National language versions of SecureWay Wireless Gatekeeper are supported on the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and AIX platforms.

Security, Auditability, and Control

IBM SecureWay Wireless Gateway for AIX V5.1 uses the security and auditability features of the RS/6000 software system.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

Each program package includes authorization for one user. In addition, customers can purchase a POE (Proof of Entitlement) which will allow the customer use of a single program package license up to the quantity of use acquired. Media packs acquired through the Passport Advantage program do not include a user authorization.

Under this Agreement, you may copy and use Your Product on every computer for which a user POE has been obtained.
