CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 are also supplied with various IBM transaction products and can be downloaded over the Internet (subject to licensing restrictions). Refer to the Licensing section. CICS Transaction GatewayThe CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.1 is for customers who want a server-based integration solution for CICS. It includes identical functional enhancements to those in the CICS Universal Clients, plus the following additions:
CICS Transaction Gateway for OS/390 Version 3.1: The CICS Transaction Gateway for OS/390 Version 3.1, which runs directly on OS/390 Version 2.5, or higher, using OS/390 UNIX services, is included with the CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.1. It enables customers to provide support for end users at Web browsers in a two-tier configuration. CICS Transaction Gateway for OS/390 Version 3.1 was developed from, and replaces, the CICS Gateway for Java (MVS), which was shipped as a component of the CICS Transaction Server for OS/390 1.2. It provides an API which enables Java applets and Java servlets to communicate using the CICS ECI interface. The CICS Transaction Gateway for OS/390 converts this ECI communication to access the CICS Transaction Server for OS/390 using the External CICS Interface (EXCI). The CICS Transaction Gateway for OS/390 Version 3.1 offers improved performance compared to the CICS Gateway for Java (MVS). The CICS Transaction Gateway is not available as a separate product. It is delivered with (same) IBM products, including:
These products give a license entitlement for the CICS Transaction Gateway. If you want to license the CICS Transaction Gateway for use with another supported CICS server, it is recommended, as an economical way of doing this, that you purchase a license for TXSeries Version 4.2 for Windows NT, AIX, Solaris, or HP-UX, or CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp, Version 4.1. Whatever the platform supported by this product, the CICS Transaction Gateway is provided for all its supported platforms, including OS/390. The CICS Transaction Gateway can also be downloaded over the Internet by those who have a license entitlement via the Web site below. Additional information is available on the CICS Clients and Gateways at the Internet Web site at: Related ProductsWhen the program package for CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 becomes available in November 1999, CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp Version 4.1 will ship CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 and CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.1 instead of the CICS Clients Version 2. For more information, refer to announcement material on the products with which it is shipped, or to Web site: Year 2000This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it. The service end date for this Year-2000-ready product is January 31, 2002. Product PositioningCICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 provides the basis for IBM's very successful Application Mining initiative. It enables significant value to be brought to new desktop applications by tapping the hidden assets existing in your core enterprise applications. It provides an easy and low-cost mechanism to enable access to CICS applications for users at desktop workstations. It can be used with CICS servers on all platforms. CICS Universal Clients provides support for a single user at a desktop workstation. Where multiple users are required, and in particular for access by multiple users at Web browsers, the CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.1 should be used. CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 is the latest IBM product for accessing CICS from desktop environments, and should be used by those who are new to CICS Clients. If you are already using CICS Clients Version 2.0 you may prefer to use CICS Clients Version 2.0.8 while continuing to roll out an existing installation. Migration to CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1 is recommended in the longer term. The CICS Transaction Gateway is the latest IBM product supporting e-business configurations with CICS. It replaces and extends the functions previously provided by the CICS Internet Gateway and the CICS Gateway for Java Customers using the CICS Internet Gateway or the CICS Gateway for Java, which are not supported by CICS Universal Clients Version 3.1, should continue to use CICS Clients Version 2.0, but should consider migrating to the CICS Transaction Gateway Version 3.1 at the earliest opportunity. Statement of DirectionSupport for the HP-UX 11 environment will be made available at a future date.
