August 24, 1999 Leverage Your AFP Printers with Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390At a GlanceLeverage your investment in AFP printers by using them for new workloads. Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 enables you to print the following ASCII datastreams on AFP printers:
You rely on the AFP/Intelligent Printer Data Steam (IPDS) architecture for your mission-critical production print applications. Now you can provide the same level of reliability and security for ASCII printing. And consolidating distributed printing onto fewer shared printers can eliminate under-utilized ASCII printers and reduce your overall cost of printing. OverviewInfoprint Server Transforms for OS/390® (program 5697-F51) provides datastream transforms that allow you to print output from LAN-based or UNIX® applications on Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) printers. What this means is that you can:
Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 is available at no additional charge to customers who have an OS/390 Version 2 Release 8 license or a later release, and also have the Infoprint Server feature enabled and licensed with IBM. Infoprint Server for OS/390 lets you:
Key PrerequisitesThe output from Infoprint Server Transforms must be printed on an AFP printer using Print Services Facility Version 3 for OS/390. Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 requires OS/390 Release 8 or later release with the Infoprint Server for OS/390 optional feature. Planned Availability DatesSeptember 24, 1999, for PCL and SAP R/3. PostScript and PDF will be available via a PTF to APAR OW40194 in fourth quarter 1999. DescriptionConsolidate Your Print onto OS/390 Since Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) was introduced in 1984, it has become a de facto industry standard for high-function, system-managed printing in centralized and distributed environments. The AFP/Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) architecture and products have supported your mission-critical production printing applications with the benefits of an architected printing solution:
Now you can leverage your investment in AFP printers, and extend the benefits of AFP/IPDS printing to all of the users in your enterprise. Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 complements the Infoprint Server for OS/390 optional feature of OS/390 Release 8 and later releases. This initial feature, providing transforms to AFP, is available at no charge. IBM Printing Systems intends to provide additional priced datastream transforms in future releases. Infoprint Server Transforms enable you to consolidate printing from personal desktop printers and LAN printers onto shared, departmental AFP printers. Printer consolidation allows you to:
Infoprint Server Transforms deliver these benefits by providing transforms from ASCII datastreams to the AFP datastream for printing on AFP/IPDS printers. Datastream transforms provided in Release 1 are:
When used with the prerequisite Infoprint Server for OS/390 feature of OS/390 Release 8 and later releases, Infoprint Server Transforms enable your LAN users to submit print jobs directly from personal computers using Windows to OS/390. Infoprint Server validates each job, and if an ASCII job is routed to an AFP printer, it calls upon the Transforms to convert the job into AFP. This allows you to use your AFP printers for LAN-based print jobs without installing special AFP drivers on each user's workstation. Use Your AFP Printers with ERP Applications Many businesses are re-engineering to streamline business processes and integrate workflow for greater productivity. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application systems such as SAP R/3, Baan and PeopleSoft are at the heart of this effort. Most ERP applications don't generate output in a format that can be used on your high-speed, high-reliability AFP printers. Their output is usually formatted for printing in PCL, PostScript, PDF or a format proprietary to the applications. Infoprint Server Transforms support printing from the SAP R/3 application suite by providing a transform from its internal OTF and ABAP formats to AFP. SAP R/3 output can then be printed on your AFP production printers. The datastream transforms from PCL, PostScript and PDF will convert output from ERP applications that generate those datastreams for printing on AFP printers. Print from UNIX System Services to AFP Printers One of the advantages of OS/390 is its ability to support traditional MVS applications and new UNIX application workloads on the same system. However, output from most UNIX applications cannot be printed on your AFP production printers. Infoprint Server Transforms let you leverage your AFP printers by transforming PCL, PostScript and PDF application output into AFP. For additional information about the Infoprint Server for OS/390 feature and its capabilities, refer to Software Announcement 299-234 , dated August 24, 1999. Year 2000This product does not have date dependencies and is Year 2000 ready. Euro CurrencyThis program is EuroReady. For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at: EuroReady Products IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, firmware and so on) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards. Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications. IBM Hardware Ready IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady. Therefore such IBM products will be designated as Hardware Ready. EuroReady Solutions IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:
and can clearly demonstrate this by:
The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document. Product PositioningInfoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 is a complementary product to the Infoprint Server for OS/390 feature of OS/390 Release 8 and later releases. It transforms the following ASCII datastreams into the AFP datastream for printing on AFP/IPDS printers using Print Services Facility Version 3 for OS/390:
Because the initial feature of Infoprint Server Transforms is available at no charge, it is very important to include this product when ordering the Infoprint Server for OS/390 if you have AFP printers installed. This product, although packaged separately, is an important part of the value of the Infoprint Server feature. It supports the following standard datastreams:
to facilitate open, distributed, multivendor interoperability. Technical InformationSpecified Operating EnvironmentHardware Requirements: Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 produce AFP output that can be printed on printers that support IPDS using PSF V3 for OS/390. Software Requirements: Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 operate with OS/390 R8 (5647-A01) and later releases and the Infoprint Server for OS/390 optional feature. Printing the AFP output from the transforms requires PSF V3 for OS/390 (5655-B17). Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 must be installed concurrent with or after installing OS/390 R8 and the Infoprint Server feature. The minimum level of system modification program/extended (SMP/E) that can be used to install Infoprint Server Transforms is the OS/390 R7 level of SMP/E. Compatibility: The output from Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 is compatible with output from IBM Infoprint Manager for AIX® V3.1 (5648-B34) and later versions and releases. Limitations: Infoprint Server Transforms for OS/390 operates only on OS/390 R8 and later versions and releases. Therefore, it cannot be used with PSF/MVS V2.2 (5695-040). The Morisawa fonts used to transform Japanese PostScript documents, available as the Kanji Package optional feature of Infoprint Manager for AIX (5648-B34) are not available with Infoprint Manager Transforms for OS/390 in this release. Performance Considerations: Transforming print jobs from ASCII datastreams into AFP will use more system resources than printing native AFP print streams or S/390® line data. The print output resulting from the transforms will, in general, be larger than native AFP or line data printed output. The impact on system and network resources will vary depending upon your print volumes, the print datastreams processed and the current utilization of your system and network resources.
