Overview

The MQSeries® family adds a key platform for MQSeries Integrator business integration — the AS/400® with DB2® database.

MQSeries Integrator is a powerful message-brokering software that uses MQSeries for transporting messages in real time. It simplifies the complexity of connections between applications by establishing a hub:

  • Through which messages pass
  • Where enterprise-defined rules can be applied intelligently
  • Where content can be transformed and reformatted

Coincident with this announcement, a new release level (V1.1) for existing distributed platforms is available, offering improved GUI and usability for working with rules and formats.

MQSeries Family

IBM's open, scalable, industrial-strength messaging and information infrastructure enables enterprises and their partners to integrate business processes to form an efficient enterprise- or community-wide system.

Different hardware and software platforms can behave as if they were designed to work together. You are no longer constrained by platform incompatibility.

Your business operation can be captured and turned into intelligent rules that:

  • Merge information from databases and other sources
  • Route the information to its target

Your business process flows can be defined, visualized, modified, and automated to yield significant quality and productivity improvements.

MQSeries is a key technology for IBM e-business and for transporting workflow data. It is the key technology for IBM business integration.

For a family overview, refer to Software Announcement 299-147 , dated June 15, 1999.

Description

MQSeries Integrator

MQSeries Integrator is powerful message-brokering software that provides real-time, intelligent rules-based message routing, and content transformation and formatting. It seamlessly integrates applications, databases, and networks.

The AS/400 platform joins the other key platforms on which MQSeries Integrator is available. The refresh level of product at V1.1 is consistent across the MQSeries Integrator offerings on all distributed platforms and is available consecutive with this announcement for those platforms. Usability, serviceability, and GUI improvements help you:

  • Be more selective when viewing the components that make up a format
  • Use a find option
  • Browse relationships between components at different levels
  • Use import/export functions to extract from a database into a file that can be edited and imported into other systems
  • Try out formats and definitions via a visual tester

MQSeries Integrator:

  • Makes it easier to integrate applications and data enterprise-wide
  • Provides faster access to information
  • Shortens time to market
  • Improves customer service and reduces overall costs
  • Opens up the information in IT systems to suppliers and customers
  • Helps leverage the value chain to improve quality and accelerate responsiveness to change
  • Relieves the burden of modifying applications every time they are integrated, that is, connected in new ways
  • Transforms and routes data outside the application, without the need for valuable programming and communications skills

Messages pass through a central connection point — the hub — that acts as the core for holding enterprise intelligence. It is designed to handle any volume of traffic, no matter how heavy or complex. It maintains two types of knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the applications enables transformation of message formats. If packaged applications are involved, application templates enable a quick start to integrating those applications with the rest of the enterprise.
  • Knowledge of business rules and information requirements enables intelligent routing of information to where it's needed. Rules, whether complex or simple, can be defined to tailor information flow.

Transformation

The knowledge of each application is stored just once in the hub and, while intelligent routing (see below) decides where each message is to go, it is translated into the appropriate format. Supplied with the information definition of each application, the transformation engine can supply data in the right format to any receiving application, without sending application being modified.

Intelligent Routing

Intelligent routing encapsulates business knowledge of how information should be distributed between message-sending and receiving applications throughout the enterprise. This knowledge is stored in the hub as a set of rules, that are applied to each message that passes through the hub. Messages are distributed according to criteria applied to the values of fields within the message.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)

MQSeries technology is available to qualified OEM for product integration via the IBM OEMs organization. Prospective OEMs can discuss details of the arrangement by contacting the IBM OEM Worldwide Software Sales team at ibmoemsw@austin.ibm.com.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

The service end date for this Year-2000-ready product is December 31, 2001.

Product Positioning

Industry trends and business drivers, such as e-business and supply chain integration, drive the need to link and extend existing and new business systems rapidly.

The MQSeries Message Broker strategy and product family represents the IBM response to this market need.

MQSeries Integrator, a part of this initiative, addresses business and application integration through the management of information flow with:

  • Information modeling
  • Routing and transformation

System connectivity is typically enhanced into application integration by developers who write code to capture, evaluate, translate, and reformat data from source applications to a format understood by destination applications.

The MQSeries Integrator V1 toolkit alleviates the burden of creating mutual understanding between source and receiving applications. Additionally, the rules engine can test the content of messages and modify flow including rerouting, create additional messages, or similar business automation activities.

Transferability: MQSeries Integrator generic capacity units are intended to be transferable across MQSeries Integrator platforms that appear in the same MQSeries Integrator Transfer Group. The MQSeries Integrator Transfer Group will generally, but not exclusively, define MQSeries Integrator products at a consistent version and release level.

The capacity units are not transferable between products in different MQSeries Integrator Transfer Groups or with products in the base MQSeries Transfer Groups.

The following groups show the current MQSeries Integrator Transfer Groups and the platforms, within group, eligible for generic capacity unit transferability. The version.release levels shown refer to MQSeries Integrator.

Currently there is just one single Transfer Group for MQSeries Integrator products at Version 1.

Customer Responsibilities: You must provide at least the minimum hardware and software environments in which the licensed programs operate.

Customers must identify the machine on which they will install the MQSeries Integrator products, and purchase the required number of capacity units with their program package order.

Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product.

Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.
