Tivoli ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager for MVS, Version 3.1 is already available and is now part of the Tivoli family of products. It was originally announced in Software Announcement 297-414 , dated October 7, 1997. ADSM Version 3.1 includes the following enhancements to Version 2.1:
Key PrerequisitesAny S/390® architecture CPU and the currently supported levels of VM, MVS, or OS/390® Planned Availability DateDescriptionSupport for Multiple Clients Tivoli ADSM for VM/ESA, Version 3.1 backs up data from clients running on:
Tivoli ADSM for MVS, Version 3.1 backs up data from clients running on:
Enterprise Management EnhancementsIncluded in Base Product Enterprise Administrator Console: Java-enabled Web browser interface that simplifies management by giving the administrator a global view of the Tivoli ADSM deployment. Web Backup-Archive Client: Java-enabled Web browser interface that allows administrators, end users, or other authorized people to perform backup and restore, and archive and retrieve functions on a remote workstation or LAN server. The Web backup-archive client support is available for the following ADSM Version 3 clients: AIX, Novell NetWare, Sun Solaris, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, Digital UNIX, OS/2, Silicon Graphics IRIX UNIX, and Windows 32-bit Intel (Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 98). Enterprise Reporting: Enterprise reporting provides the ability for the administrator to obtain information about the Tivoli ADSM enterprise as a whole. To simplify reporting needs, Tivoli ADSM provides a number of predefined server scripts (described below) that can be automatically loaded into the server database during installation. Tivoli ADSM-supplied server scripts include:
With the enterprise administrator console Web interface, an administrator can create additional reporting scripts or views, and execute and modify existing ones. Automation Enhancements: Enhanced automation functions are being added to eliminate or reduce staff-intensive manual procedures.
Included in Optional Priced Feature Enterprise Administration: The new optional Enterprise Administration priced feature includes a set of enhancements that enables administrators to centrally manage multiple Tivoli ADSM servers with a single Tivoli ADSM enterprise administration console interface. The Tivoli ADSM enterprise administration console is a Web browser that serves as the integration point for all Tivoli ADSM functions. When the Enterprise Administration feature is licensed, the enterprise console provides the administrator with several global views of the Tivoli ADSM deployment and provides an interface for the following functions:
Other Enhancements Included in Base Product Control ManagementAs systems grow, and more Tivoli ADSM servers are deployed to support data availability requirements, it becomes critical to administer and operate these systems in a network-centric manner. Centralized Event Logging: Centralized logging of operational information allows Tivoli ADSM client and server events to be made available from a central point. These events can be sent to a variety of receivers including the ADSM database, a flat file, a user-written exit, the Tivoli Enterprise Console, and as specially formatted messages for use by NetView for OS/390. The granularity of logging can be customized for selected clients. The SQL interface and the ADSM Query commands can be used to view events stored in the ADSM database. Client Options Stored at Server: Tivoli ADSM allows most client options to be stored at the server, providing additional administrator control for setting options and relieving clients of this operational requirement. To avoid replication, client options can be grouped into sets that can be shared between multiple clients. Tivoli ADSM Server-to-Server Virtual Volumes: For enterprises deploying multiple Tivoli ADSM servers, the optional Server-to-Server Virtual Volumes feature (for MVS, formerly called Server-to-Server Communication) allows Tivoli ADSM to pass data between servers, whether across the room or across the country. This function allows movement of information between storage pools on multiple Tivoli ADSM servers. The ability to define a storage hierarchy across multiple servers may help reduce overall storage costs by sharing key system resources such as robotic tape libraries and drives. The Server-to-Server Virtual Volumes function is also ideal for electronic vaulting of database and storage pool backups to a secondary site for disaster recovery. The optional Disaster Recovery Manager feature, available for ADSM for MVS, Version 3.1, now supports automated disaster recovery using the Server-to-Server Virtual Volumes function. SQL Interface: Tivoli ADSM supports SQL queries on the Tivoli ADSM administrative command line interface and Web browser interfaces. It provides an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface on selected platforms to access and report on Tivoli ADSM database and real-time Tivoli ADSM server information. ODBC is supported by off-the-shelf spreadsheets, databases, and other tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Lotus® 1-2-3®, and Lotus Approach®. You can build queries that satisfy your business requirements, import data into the tools of your choice, and format to suit your specific needs. The ODBC interface is packaged with the Windows 32-bit (Intel) client. PerformanceDue to the increase in around-the-clock operations, and the high growth in the amount of data, backup and restore throughput has become a vital concern. In addition, it is necessary to deal with the increasing performance requirements resulting from the growing number and size of files and filesystems. Tivoli ADSM is addressing this growth by implementing new data transfer mechanisms and storage models for substantial performance improvements over the existing ADSM product. Small File Aggregation: To help improve backup and archive performance for small files, Tivoli ADSM will group multiple small files together as a single object on the server. This grouping results in fewer data pointers and less database and storage pool entries. This enhancement also helps improve database expiration performance, as well as performance for storage pool backup and migration, since there are fewer objects to move and manage. This enhanced function is transparent to the end user, and does not prevent individual retrieval of files that have been aggregated. Restore Directory Trees: A new algorithm has been added for the restore function that enhances the restore operation and consumes less client memory resources. Fault-Tolerant Clients: New fault-tolerant features provide intelligent resumption of interrupted file system restores. Users are informed when retries are occurring. If desired, users are able to stop the retries. Usability EnhancementsAn improved user interface is designed to make users and administrators feel more at ease in an increasingly complex environment. The new Tivoli ADSM interface masks complexity, and enables faster navigation and movement through the screens. Redesigned Initial Panels: The initial client GUI panel provides an easy, intuitive way of selecting the primary functions of Tivoli ADSM. Redesigned Primary Windows: The main backup, archive, restore, and retrieve panels have been redesigned so you have more flexibility in making choices such as setting options and selecting files and drives. Enhanced Directory Selection Techniques: New selection techniques have been added to allow an entire directory tree to be easily selected, so that an operation can be performed on all of the directory contents. Collapsible Directory Trees: To eliminate excessive scrolling through a directory, collapsible directory trees are supported. New Progress Indicators: Progress indicators provide up-to-date status, including projected function execution time, file scanning progress, and server connection. Point-in-Time Restore: Point-in-time restore allows a file system to be restored to a previous point in time. During a point-in-time restore, the latest backup file copy created prior to or equal to the specified point in time is restored. Backup file copies for a file deleted prior to the point-in-time restore date are not restored. Single Drive Libraries: Tivoli ADSM automates tape reclamation of single-drive libraries. Web Browser Interface: Tivoli ADSM provides a Web browser interface that allows any platform with a supported Web browser to serve as a Tivoli ADSM administrative interface. Incremental Backups: Tivoli ADSM now allows you to select a set of files and directories to be backed up incrementally, in addition to the incremental backup of an entire file system. Client Passwordaccess=Generate: The Passwordaccess=Generate option is now available for all backup-archive and API clients. An encrypted password is stored on each workstation for use during session initiation. If the password expires, a new password will be automatically generated (hence the name). Other Server Enhancements

Planning InformationConversion: The enterprise management enhancements made minor format changes to the ADSM Version 3.1 server database and recovery log. After upgrading from Version 2.1 to Version 3.1, the user can no longer run ADSM Version 2.1 server code with the new table formats. As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the Version 3.1 code, as well as after completing the installation. Refer to the README files for more detailed information. The ADSM database is not automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli ADSM V3.1 server. The ADSM administrator will be informed of the procedure to upgrade a Version 2 database during the install process. The ADSM administrator must explicitly initiate the database upgrade. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run the ADSM V2.1 servers with the database. As part of a migration plan from ADSM V2 to Tivoli ADSM V3, ADSM clients and servers may be upgraded at different times. To ensure that you can continue your backup and archive activities during the migration, Tivoli ADSM V3 allows the following:

Optional Features The Disaster Recovery Manager feature, available for ADSM for MVS, Version 3.1, enables support for enterprise-wide disaster recovery management. A license is required for each MVS server where the DRM server function resides. The Open Systems feature enables support for the OS/390 UNIX System Services client and AFS/Distributed File Service (DFS) on the AIX client. A license is required for each VM or MVS server where the Open Systems server function resides. The Server-to-Server Virtual Volumes feature (for MVS, formerly called Server-to-Server Communication) enables support for objects to be sent to or received from one server to another directly. A license is required for each VM or MVS server participating in a server-to-server environment. The Space Management feature enables the server to support HSM on AIX, Solaris, or Silicon Graphics (MVS only) workstations. A license is required for each VM or MVS server managing Space Management clients. The Enterprise Administration feature enables centralized management of multiple Tivoli ADSM servers. A license is required for each VM or MVS server from which the enterprise is being administered (where the server function resides). An AIX, Solaris, or Silicon Graphics (for MVS only) client, running with the Space Management feature, requires a user registration unless the workstation on which it is running already has a client which has obtained a registration. In other words, the HSM client can share a user registration with an AIX, Solaris, or Silicon Graphics backup-archive client. The Lotus Notes backup agent running on an OS/2 workstation requires one user registration. If that workstation is also running an OS/2 backup-archive client, then an additional user registration would be required.
